Zenith DVB 318 & LG 7832 DVD Player merged thread - Page 16

I just got the LG LST-3510A (HDTV receiver + DVD player with upscaled DVI and RGB outputs).
I have set it up to RGB output at 720p and connected a 15pin VGA to 5 x BNC cable to the RGBHV input of my CRT projector.

It works fine for SD/HD DTV over-the-air, but it won't play a commercial DVD on the RGB output (it says to use the component out at 480i/p instead).
I works only with "non-commercial" DVDs.

Does anyone know if there is a way around this?
(like the region free firmware on CD)

Does anyone who has the Momitsu 880 know if the DVI-I to VGA adapter allows DVD playback at 720p via VGA?
I've heard that the Momitsu can do NTSC/PAL and any region.
Did anyone test this?

I have a modified SONY DVP-S7700 with the Cinematrix PSM1 board installed inside, that outputs 720p on RGBHV BNC, but I was interested in getting the HDTV receiver in the same box.

If you install the new firmware can you backtrack to the old one? I want to try it out on DVI. Once I get a HD though I want to use DVI for that instead, so I will backtrack to the old one. Is that possible?

Does it even make a difference? Hm....

There was a thread on the AVS forum where both the old and new firmware was listed. I didn't download them. From what I've heard, the only thing the new firmware does is fix the white crush and disables the upconversion over component. I'll just stick with component if that's all it does. I was hoping it would fix other issues such as the pixel cropping and macroblocking but apparently it doesn't. You can probably search the huge Zenith thread on AVS forum and find the firmware.

is it against rules to post links ? if thats not cool let me know and I will remove it. sorry if thats the case.
No Ralph, its not at all against the rules to post links! I was rolling my eyes at greg_t who proposed searching for the firmware on the AVS forums when you had already posted the link to the firmware... maybe the rolleyes was a bad idea :b

Pretty rude. I didn't see that up there and was trying to be helpful.

Jean, i also have an LG LST-3510A. i have it connected to a sceptre naga iii 30" lcd via vga, component, and dvi. i find that the best picture is via the vga connection. component is also as good, but on daylight scenes where there is a blue sky, i see quite a bit of macro-blocking. i don't see this via vga or dvi.

Jean, you might be very disappointed with the dvi image once you have seen the vga picture. the weird part is that via dvi the picture is very clean- no noise at all, but the colors are very faded/washed out. i don't know if it is from the dvd player or lcd tv. anyone else had this experience?

i've ordered a component to vga transcoder. i'm not sure if this will eliminate the macro-blocking. we'll see.

Hi,
This may already be on one of the pages but for someone just checking out these players for the first time, go to the hdtv section of www.keohi.com wher you'll find a review and other info by ISF'r Michael TLV. I think firmware dnlds are there also.

The A'B ing on a Tosh 65h80 through component using a HOLO3D vid scaler and SDI modded Panny rp82 is mine.

Shane Bryant,

My Zenith has the same problem you discusssed at 480p. Not visible on moving images, but on title screens & static images, there's some bleeding going on. I try adjusting the set, but the bleeding is still visible.
I only use my DVB318 for 1080i. 480p and 720p is crap. Major image bleeding.

I just bought the LG 7832. I can't hook it up yet as my TV and DVI cable have yet to be delivered. I just have a couple of questions for those who might know.

While reading the manual I noticed that it says even though you have selected 1080i/720p output res, the player will still only output 480p (over component video) if the DVD has copy protection. Would this not mean that all commercially available DVDs will be 480p regardless of your selected output res? If so is there a "fix" for this?

Second, also reading the manual, it doesn't say how to select whether you want to output the video over component, DVI, or others. Does this mean that it will send video through all outputs at the same time?

Thanks for any help,

Craig

One more thing. My unit has a Feb 2004 build date. Will it give me trouble with upconverting?

Thanks, Craig
Hi Craig,
If the 318 scales the same way it's twin the LG player does and your set is properly calibrated scale from component and you'll hardly know the difference from DVI.

If your not one of the ones I sent to www.keohi.com (hdtv forum section, go there and read ISF'r extraordinaire Michael TLV (Michael Chens) blurbs on these two complete with firmware dnlds.

I've been saying this till I'm blue in the face. Whenever you see a product that scales from DVI to HD rezes it's just half the story an agreement amoung manufacturers forced upon them by the movie studios insists that all DVI outputs on players and DVI inputs on TV's are HDCP compliant. So if you player isn't playing by the rules your TV probably is so the result is the same.

You can scale a homemade dvd of you daughters wedding but your SOL when it comes to Spiderman. It is not clear if component has to play by the same rules.

My set only has component. If you read Michael Chens review of the LG player (the 318's twin) the 65" tosh he talks about with component was my specific set and I watched and participated in the test.

Thanks for the reply. I know about the DVI and HDCP thing but I will be using the component inputs on my TV for this particular unit. I have seen some of the threads talking about how units made before a certain date, will ouput the 1080i over compoment video and those after a certain date will not. I was just wondering if mine, being built Feb 2004, will do the 1080i? Also, how do i know if mine needs the fimware upgrades you mentioned? I saw the descrete code for the upconvert button. That is very helpfull.

Finally to save you from your chronic cianosis of the face, maybe someone who knows these units well could make one of those replies that always stays at the top of the first page of the thread and have it list answers to all of the biggest questions, like the firmware, the scaling, the build dates for the best units and which units are identicle, the descrete codes, etc. This way newbs like me don't repeat the same questions over and over again. At 15 pages this thread takes hours to surf.

thansk again craig
Try it, I think you will be fine. Yu will get a message and the DVD will only play in 480p if it won't work.
Wow, quite a thread!

I hooked this player up to a 60" LG plasma with two different HDMI cables (one in the box and a $300 AudioQuest) and it looked awful!? Skin tones were just colors (red, green, and blue, just different shades, no natural colors)

Do you think this was the TV or DVD player? Tired all three video modes and they looked pretty much the same (issue with the colors)

Other video signals look fine.
Hey all. I finally got everything all hooked up. I did return my Samsung upconversion DVD to get the LG. Thanks for all of the info. Here is what I wound up with.

Samsung 43" DLP, LG 7832 DVD, connected directly (no switching) with a 33 foot Ultra Link challenge series "videophile" component video interconnect.

It looks awsome! Even though the TVs native res is 720p the 1080i setting on the DVD looks the best. Go figure. I never tried it with a DVI cable so I can't say how that looks but all the reviews I read said go component. So I did. I'm saving the DVI on my TV for my HiDef sat receiver. I havn't found a DVD that won't upconvert yet and my player has a July '04 build date so I geuss I'm ok there.

To the last poster who gets bad picture over HDMI, try component. This DVD player apparently looks best that way. I had Monsters Inc. in last night and there were absolutly no artifacts. I can't wait to get the TV calibrated.

Hi,
I would thing that a HDMI in/put would deffinitely incur HDCP and would not scale a store bought DVD. Use component, you won't be disappointed.

If you are looking for the LG-DV7832 they have them at CircuitCity dot com. They are going for about 189.99; I have seen them at BB also but the price is 199.99. The Zenith is the same model but is pretty hard to find. If you are looking for a review they have them at circuit city but only 7 reviews so far and all are good.

Im not sure why hunting the Zentih DVB318 is so hard. Unless something falls apart, I just ordered the unit from amazon and it will ship by Feb 10th. $199.00 with $10.00 shipping.

I have a Panasonic L300U projector. I've been using a Bravo D1 since it (and the Momitsu V88) is the only player that is non-hdcp over dvi and will do the custom timings neccesary to use the L300U's DVI port. Well, my D1 just died and i'm looking for a replacement. I'm not getting another Bravo and the Momitsu is nearly as buggy. I know i'll be upgrading my projector in the next year or so to something that will accept HDCP DVI or HDMI. What i'm considering as a DVD replacement is a 318/7832 and use firmware that allows 1080i over component with my current projector and when I upgrade my projector update to the firmware with the fixed DVI. Does this sound like a good course of action? Any other recomendations?

Thanks

Do you know what the problem is? If it's the loader the whole thing can be replaced wholesale with a standard DVD-ROM drive (some brands/models are better than others). But you may have already explored this option...
I've explored replacing the loader (even before it died). I still think replacing the player would be a better idea, especially since there are some remote IR overlap issues between the D1 and my Pioneer receiver.
I can understand the IR overlap frustration but the loader replacement is very easy and inexpensive if you can locate a drive. Only thing is the drive noise might be a problem. I put in a Toshiba in mine, which was supposed to be quiet, but it's still pretty loud compared to standard off the shelf players. Once in the movie it's not as bad, just in start up and disc navigation.
Hi,
Iguess it depends how much you like the player.

My RP 82 went down and my local elctronic fixit guy said that the reading lense had to be properly cleaned and while its open you might as well change the spindle motor since the player is over 2 years old. It cost me $72cdn tax inc.

My rp82 is SDI modified and works with my HOLO3D scaler so it was deffinitely worth it to me.

Anyone know of any place in and around Toronto that still caries the LG player? I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks,

MarkusP,

Have you tried Future Shop? Last week, I bought an open box special (LG 7832 w/ Nov 2003 build date) at FS...main unit only, ie. no remote, no accessories or manual for $101 Canadian plus taxes. This is just a backup for my other LG 7832.
