Zenith DVB 318 & LG 7832 DVD Player merged thread - Page 15

How do ya'll think my luck is? Think amazon has one for me? Think this is a better purchase than a Denon 1910?

I have a Toshiba 46" DLP.
On a DLP, right now, I'd say the 1910 would have it beat hands down using DVI/HDMI for the connection.

There are some more serious issues with the DVB-318 out the DVI, from most reports.
But the 1910 doesn't upconvert for all DVDs due eto copyright, correct? The reason I would go for a Zenith is due to upconversoin of ALL DVDs via component?

I could siltl buy a zenith and upconvert via component, is that a worse or better route than buying a Denon?

My friend has the same set as me and he says the Denon 1910 via component produces a marvelous picture (though, I don't think the denon upconverts over component).

I'm stuck, what do I do?

The 1910 doesn't support HDCP??? I'm pretty sure that is not correct.

DLP displays usually benefit greatly using a DVD player that can scale to their native resolution and then fed via DVI/HDMI. This connection should support HDCP just fine.

It is the Component Analog Out that usually will not be allowed do to HDCP.

Then again some sets have such nice de-interlacers and scalers, Feeding them 480i over the component connection is often times best.

In essence no matter what equipment you have, it is best to experiment with all possibilities on all connections and resolutions to find what is best for you.

John,

I just bought a DVI to HDMI connector and a DVI cable. I have an ati radeon 9700 pro all in wonder that has DVI out (with a vga connector on that to connect to my monitor).

I'm going to have to switch back and forth between my monitor and keyboard probably until I cna find a solution (or a different video card). I am going to read up on powerstrip and stuff tonight to try and get a 1x1 pixel mapping.

THis was certainly cheaper ($100) than a DVD player, I wonder if I can feed the TV it's native 1x1 pixel mapping resolution via DVI and hope for the best?

The DVI is sort of confusing.

Computer DVI (VGA Plug) is analog. HDTV Display DVI is digital. They are not compatible from all I know about it.
Damn. The guy at the hifi shop told me something about DVI-I, etc. and he said we won't see any of that in home computers for a while.

I don't know...it looks like I wasted $130, but I won't say taht without trying.

Most computers have DVD-I (both analog and digital), but the TV / displays are DVD-D. You need a DVI-D cable.

You can get a 2m one for $20 shipped from ebay or STSI.com

It will work.

He knew I was doing an HTPC, he told me he builds HTPCs on the side. He knows I was going out with a radeon all in wonder to the TV, but he doesn't nkow the Toshibas. Are ALL DLPs DVI-D?

The cable he gave me was an HDMI to DVI (I or D?) connector, and then a 6 foot DVI to DVI cable.

Well, some HDTV displays do have to correct connector for connection. I guess, I should of verified for your particular display which is exactly the case.

Interesting and most confusing really. So don't feel bad at all if it doesn't work. I've sure tried a lot of things that didn't work in my day. (Although I try really hard to not post them on here) lol
post #431 of 614
I have my PC plugged into my TV with a DVI-D to HDMI cable. Cost me $20 for a 6 foot cable.
of course I opted for the over priced mosnter cable because i didn't want to wait any longer. it was $20 for the HDMI to DVI-D connector, and $100 (!!) for the 6ft DVI-DVI cable.

Order a cheap one and return that monster one once you get the cheap one you ordered. :b

seth, which TV do you have? Samsung works fine..I hear toshiba is much harder.
I have the LG7832 and a Sony WEGA 50" LCD Projection, connected with DVI

Two questions:

1) I keep hearing the service menu for the LG mentioned, but still have yet to find out how to access it - can anyone help?

2) When I use 1080i, I get a great picture through DVI. When I use 480 or 720 however, the reds and greens bleed something awful... it's a player problem, nothing to do with the set. So - if I'm watching non-anamorphic or 4:3 DVDs, I have to switch to S-Video, because my TV automatically stretches all DVI inputted material. Anyone else have this problem?

I have a Hitachi CRT 57S715.

The ATI drivers allow 1920x1080i timings to be forced on the DVI output, so the TV has no problems locking onto it.

Best looking DVDs AFTER upconversion via Zenith 318/LG 7832?

To Zenith 318/LG 7832 owners....what are your best looking DVDs after upconversion to 1080i?

Thanks.

ATTACK OF THE CLONES
U-571
Latest Godzilla Movies
The Matrix
Toy Story 1 and 2
Aladdin
Lion King
just to name a few.

Finding Nemo

Basically any well mastered DVD that looks great at 480p can look stunning at 1080i. Anything else is a crap shot and usually the differences are minimal.

Off topic but related:

I watch all my DVDs upscaled to 720P via my Momitsu DVD player...that feeds the upscaled 1280 x 720P image to my (native 720P) DLP projector via DVI.

I notice a distinct improvment in PQ doing this versus using the analog 480P component connection...more finely rendered detail and cleaner picture though sometimes color-banding can be more apparent. Of course, the DLP has its own built-in scaling to convert everything to 720P but it seems the best PQ is obtained letting the DVD player do it and then feeding the video digitally via DVI...

Also, the Momitsu's 4x3 lbx -> 16x9 zoom is much better than the "zoom" on the projector...which introduces too many jaggies.

Fifth Element Superbit. Any Superbit title, but especially this one. It's VERY close to looking like a true HD picture.

Do all Zenith DVB 318 players with built date of December 2003 have issues with DVI connection. I have the Sony RPTV KPS51WS520 and the Zenith is hooked up via component. Now I understand via component I get a great picture and I just got my Best Buy reward of 75.00 towards any purchases. I was think of getting the adapter converting DVI to HDMI, but it's my understanding that all movies will not play via HDMI due to HDCP. Is this the issue of the Zenith player and of course if it is, I'll spend the money on some Acoustic Research Component cables for 30.00. What do you guys think.
They all play via DVI / HDMI, it is component that has HDCP limitations.

The problem with the DVI, is there are some video issues with it on the Zenith DVB-318.
elMalloc,

Where did you get a $20 HDMI to DVI adapter? I paid $40 for mine!

For anyone interested I took some pics of the pixel cropping, so potential buyers will know how it looks.

take note that the right side of the image is cropped off as opposed to the other image

zenith dvb 318

pioneer 563

One should note that even with the cropping issues, the zenith video playback quality in 1080i blows the pioneer 563 out of the water.

I got my dvd player today, I adjusted the image by using zoom and focus on my projector lens

has anyone seen or mentioned this ? .......

Zenith/LG Firmware
Good source I guess if you have the newer 318 model and wish to use the component out for upscaling. The only issue I have is that via DVI, you still have HDCP to worry about hence not all movies will upconvert to 1080i via DVI.
Hmmm Ok.. Just out of the fact I don't know.

How do you upload one of these? This is very good news, for recently purchased and built DVB-318's.....
Haven't downloaded this fix since I don't need it, but my guess is that there must be a way to access the service menu of the DVD player via pressing buttons on the remote together or in sequence and then uploading the firmware.
You have to burn the firmware onto a CD and stick it in the player. There are more detailed instructions somewhere on the net, gotta find them...
