Zenith DVB 318 & LG 7832 DVD Player merged thread - Page 13

Just got mine today. Dec 03 build. I'm going to try the region free code when I get it set up
post #362 of 614
I got mine the other day too, an found out the hard way that apparently my projector won't accept 480p over component. Time to decide if I should buy a 480p -> VGA converter, or if I just return the thing. Oh well, that's a free projector for ya!

Ordering my Sony RPTV today, need to know where to order the Zenith player. Thanks.
I ordered mine from Amazon - cheaper than BB and CC
post #365 of 614
Thanks, just ordered from Gouchnauers for the 160.00 with old firmware that allows using component for upscaling. Ordering the Sony RPTV tonight or tomorrow, I'll finally see what you guys are talking about.

Hi all,

I see Futureshop has the LG 7832 Hi def player for $249.99 cdn.Can anyone tell me if these players make all movies better or just the ones recorded in hi-def?Another thing, has anyone been keeping an eye on these "blue ray" DVD players? They are supposed to hit the market in 2005-2006.They will play both our current DVD's and the new Blue ray type of disc's.If anyone has more info please feel free to send it along.

There are no DVD's recorded in Hi-Def. Some DVD are sourced from a Hi-Def transfer, but all dvd's are 480i. It does nothing magical to make your DVD's better. It merely takes the 480i that is there and adds a bit more resolution. What this player will do is take the 480i on the dics, upconvert it to 480p, then to 1080p, then reinterlace back to 1080i or 720p. Whether this does much depends it seems on your current display and how good your current DVD player is. I use both the Zenith at 1080i and a Panasonic RP82 at 480p, and the Zenith is no better than the Panasonic. Others see a difference. Regardless, this player will NOT make your DVD's true Hi-Def. Depending on these things, it may be better than what you have and is reasonably priced as well.

for people with an X1 it seems to make a difference. seems pretty magical to me as no other player can do what this can do over component. I owned a XP50 and I see a difference.

looks magical to me. must be the little mouse with the wand inside the unit.

Visually the 318 Looks best Upconverted to 720P on my setup. I am using it with a Infocus 4805 and have seen that the picture is best at this setting.

My ony problem is sound tracking on a few DVD's ???

this happend when viewing Hidalgo. I had to stop play and restart to sync them back again. it happend on a few other movies also. Cant remeber which ones.

I am trying to figure out if it is a receiver problem or the player......
I am using the 318 at 1080i. I have the same problem from time to time. Each time the problem is easily fixed by stopping (not pausing but stopping) the DVD and restarting (okay from the same location).

It happens occasionally and I assume that it is a problem with the DVD player and not the source material. Since the problem is easily fixed on a 100% basis, I have not been overly concerned about it.

Just got my player in today and tried about a dozen different discs and only able to play 2 of them. I think the player has issues. It is a Dec. 2003 build date and I tried unplugging it for 15 min. and also reseting it through the menu but no go. Still the same problem. Has anybody else dealt with this yet? I'm looking into returning it for another one but if there is a fix then I would rather do that.
HO NGUYEN, I'd say you have a defective player, unless all these discs won't play on other players properly.

Can I ask what happens on the discs that won't play? What's the symptom(s)?
How does the player handle HDCDs? Its not listed or anything but the display has CD and then HD in front of it. I put in an HDCD and it didnt light up, so I guess its not working? Did they decide to ditch it like SACD and DVDA?

Hey all,

Just a couple of questions:

1. what build dates should I avoid for component conversion? Looks like Dec 2003 was that last known good?

2. can you tell the build date from the box? If not does anyone know where I can find one in Toronto with a good build date? (I hope this post is appropriate)

Thanks in advance for any help here!

The March build is OK too, as far as I know.
I have a march build and it works on all dvd's.
IMO, I suggest avoiding the July 2004 build date for the LG 7832. Via component on my Infocus X1, it upconverts to 1080i only some DVDs. Of the 15 DVDs that I have tried, less than half upcoverted.....the remaining wouldn't upconvert. Problematic DVDs that I know include: Spiderman, Star Wars 1&2, LOTR: FOTR, Matrix, Master & Commander, Army of Darkness.

The build date is on both the exterior of the box (one side, lower right hand corner) and on the back of the DVD player.

Ouch DavidY...... July2004, man did I just skate in under the wire with the March 2004 build date.

Scored a Decemeber 2003, so lucky. Will test it with my Sanyo Z1 tonight.

Does anybody know if the Z1 Service Menu fix is just going to stretch the image?

Thanks

Zenith arrived today. Wife didn't want to tell me to surprise me when I got home. I'll start with Finding Nemo with the kids and Star Wars Attack of the Clones. Anyone using the cables provided with the Zenith player? I had taken the Yellow composite cables rated at 75ohm from satellite receivers and marked them accordingly. I thought the cables Zenith sent was a bit thin. Also is there an adapter that would make one end of the DVI cable Zenith sent to a HDMI connection?
Just received mine today. Dec 2003 build date. Hooked it right up and popped in toy story 2. I would not say that the improvement is jaw dropping, however the image is much smoother and all around more solid. Next up was star wars 2. Everything looked great except in shots where the actors were farther back. they seemed a bit fuzzy. I think once I have everything calibrated it will help this out. I didn't have time to tweak at all, I had to leave for work. But so far I am very happy!

The best part is the non-anamorphic zoom trick!! That worked great!!!
About the cables...

I haven't bought a new player for a couple of years now, and I was shocked that almost every single cable was included! All they missed was the optical!!

I can still remember my first DVD player purchase. I saved for over month to come up with the $335 needed for the Panasonic I wanted. It never occurred to me, nor did the salesman suggest, that Panasonic would not include an s-video cable. More recent purchases included cables, but those hit the trash immediately. The cables included in with the Zenith, while not the best, seem like they would do in a pinch. I did not need to use any of them so I am going keep them all around for "just in case"

All in all I think this is my best spur of the moment purchase. I was just starting to think about a new player when someone in the forum pointed me towards the Zenith (thanks John S)
So far im not too impressed to be honest, I was expecting too much from this unit. The one thing I noticed was better fluid movement during the film. Also no chroma bug is a plus.

But I have this terrible yellowish look to the picture. I have calibrated the unit and Sanyo Z1 again using the Sound and Vision disk (Avia lite). And damn does that remote suck. The cropping is a pain as well (I haven't done the service menu tweak yet as I dont know whether I am going to keep it)

Overall I am pretty underwhelmed. I think its mostly due to the fact my Front Projector isnt a good match for this unit (1/4 HD resoltion)

Anybody else with a Z1 have a different experience?

Daniel, if you get a chance, go to the AVS DVD forum and do a search for 318 and Z1. Also check the 318 FAQs thread. The Z1 was a hot topic and I think people found out they could get firmware for the Z1 and some other tricks.

Don't give up yet!
Just picked up an LG at Future Shop. The box was beat up, but it looks new. The date is Feb 2004.

Martin.

You're home free then. Full upconversion via component, the works. Enjoy!
I noticed on the manual it has the Windows media logo. I know this is a long shot, but has anyone tried the HD version of T2??
The WM symbol is because the player plays Windows Media Audio files as well as mp3s.

Well, after alot of reading, & being stuck in a hotel for 3 days, I made a purchase, got the 318 shipped for $160

Build date of Dec 2003.

I first thought the unit had the new firmware on it, but as I finally figured out, the unit can only be switched to 1080i when in stop mode....duh!>!

Anyways, I think it's a big step from the $99 Sony I had before.

I have it wired using the component connection, even though my tv (famous 42" Sony GWIII, luckily built after the lamp issue) has a DVI connection. Not sure if the DVI cable included is just not the best quality or what, but, it's very noticable that the 1080i upconvertes signal look much better using the component (Monster) instead of the DVI.

Anyways, I'm happy with the purchase, Ice Age & Monsters Inc never looked so good on my TV

I agree with the comment above though, the remote is terrible!

Where can I buy the dvb318 with a guarantee that it is one of the earlier build dates? My local Zenith dealer can't guarantee this. Thanks.
