Buck Rogers in the 21st Century - Page 3

so what about commentaries or a documentary ?
Yep. I will be buying this for sure. BR is my first TV recollection pretty much, next to Mr. Rogers, and Sesame Street. I loved the show.

Since Season One and Two are being packaged together I now see this as a better deal as long as the price isn't outrageous. So I think I'm in now

in order to have all of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century on 5 disks is to put them on two sided disks with at lest 7 episodes on each disk and one disk with 8 episodes on it.
myself i would hate this.
needs to be put on 9 disks with lables. i cant see puting more then 4 shows to a disk and still have lables.

This was a good call on Universal's part. I just hope they don't make the set ridiculously expensive and that they don't have some silly oversized packaging (like last year's Battlestar Galactica release).

Twikki's head?

Seriously, a nice special edition case would be the discs housed within a "Dr Theopolis" like spindle. And it would have straps so you could wear it around your neck and walk around saying "biddie biddie biddie."

It'll probably be double-sided discs, just like Battlestar Galactica. To those who said to do a special box like Dr. Theopolis: don't give Universal any ideas!

Excellent idea!

Hiya, Oscar! Long time no talk!

If you double-check our news, you'll see that Universal hasn't spoken about extras yet. They usually don't mention extras at the initial announcement, instead waiting to discuss them later on.

The Digital Bits says in one breath that extras weren't announced, but in the next breath says that they think Gil Gerard is doing a commentary. I don't think it would be like that: Gord and I ran a piece a few months ago that planned commentaries and interviews with both Gil and Erin had been scrapped. We ran a "campaign" to let fans send feedback to Uni asking that these extras be reinstated. I really doubt the studio would reinstate just Gil, and leave Erin out in the cold. They are good friends, and go on the road to Conventions together routinely. I would be surprised if this were the case.

Still, I'm working to find out, so stay tuned. When I get info about Buck's extras, I'll post a news item at TSoD.

My guess is the whole package will be similar to Battlestar Galactica's in terms of double-sided discs, featurettes, commentary, etc. Both series on DVD are labeled as "The Complete Epic Series."

So I am guessing that all of the two hour episodes will be split up?
I'd check here...Official Gil Gerard site

I did read elsewhere online that Gil and Erin were approached to be involved in commentaries.

You'll hear it at that site though I'm sure.

Loved it then. Watched one recently and could barely get through it. It has not aged well.
I was surprised that Dennis Hubert of "24" was actually on the episode that I was watcing. He's come a long way!

News Story: Studio Won't Let Stars Shine Bright In Outer Space Epic

Bad news, guys.

I am 100% positive about what I am saying in that story. No question of it.

That really is too bad; I hate to see studios passing up opportunities like this, and I don't care for the precedent it sets either ("Hey, BR didn't have commentaries and it sold alright... Why do we need to do it for the Six Million Dollar Man/The Mod Squad/(insert your favorite show)?")

Still looking forward to BR. Hopefully, Universal won't skimp on the packaging too.

Hopefully, ONLY "Plot to Kill a City" and "Flight of the War Witch", as all of the others were originally presented as 2-hour specials. If they use the 2-part versions, then footage will be missing (such as when you see the 2-part version of the "Greetings From Earth" episode of Battlestar Galactica) as they would've cut stuff out to add-in the "on last week's show" reprise.

Although extras haven't been announced, I really hope they at least include cut scenes. I don't know about the series episodes, but there was quite a bit of stuff cut from the pilot (most notably, all of the scenes containing Emperor Draco, but also, some footage from the theatrical release was also left out and/or replaced).

I wonder if the transfers will be new or the same one's Sci-Fi has been using for the past few years.
Night Gallery is setting a bad precedent for such things over at Universal.
BTW, apparently we shouldn't complain about these show getting proper treatment on DVD, it seems this is a "HTF Cliche".

Although the there may not be a commentary on the disks I am pretty sure that I will be there to buy this box set. I have to admit that I would much prefer that there were commentary's from Gil and Erin thought.

I am curious as to how they will handle the pilot. To my knowledge, only the theatrical version was released on home video in the past.

While I personally prefer the theatrical version...the TV version has the added epilogue at the end that I really like. Will this be a merge of the two? Will they release both versions?
I imagine if they released the theatrical it would be a separate release, like they did with Battlestar. After all, the movie wasn't technically part of the TV show, even if it did share 99% of the footage.

My dad, bless him, took me to see that glorious cheesefest. I recall an "s" word or two in there, and a little more innuendo/tension between Buck and Ardala. I recall noticing some alternate footage and/or editing differences in the TV version, but I haven't seen either in what, 23 years?, so I have no idea what those differences were.

For Galactica, they announced a separate movie-DVD at the same time. Actually, that was a re-release of a years-old item, with a new cover.

The Buck "film" was NOT announced as a separate DVD at the same time as the "Complete Epic" Buck set, nor is there a previous release of it for them to easily re-issue.

IF the Buck film edit IS coming, it will be part of the "epic set". Right now I hve no evidence one way or the other, except for the vague wording from Uni that I quoted in my news item. But I don't think the time counts work out right for inclusion of both the TV edit and the Film edit. I need to re-examine that a bit closer, though.

Jay, my news item links to the IMDB list of the differences between both edits.
I don't think they will have both either. Which is unfortunate since it will be weird to have one without the other. The TV version has never officially been released. The best scenerio would be an edit of the two, keeping most of the theatrical version and adding the TV epilogue at the end. Sadly, I don't see Universal putting the effort in. In fact, the people doing this set probably don't even know about the two different versions!
i'd like to see the theatrical version released as well (seperately would be fine with me), but i have to say i'm happy to hear that the set will also include the more maligned second season.

disappointing to hear of no extra material, but actually the second season is the best 'extra' i can think of.

looking forward to this release quite a bit now
post #85 of 244
It is great that this is coming, and all in one set. I really do hope they have both versions of the pilot, though. Battlestar Galactica was handled the right way, in my opinion, even if was just a reissue of a previous disc. The theatrical version on a separately sold disc, in widescreen, no less, and the TV version in the box set.

I'd buy both if they did that with Buck.

All I need now is the confirmation that the "movie" version of the pilot on the set is uncut and in anamorphic widescreen and I'll preorder it.

I know the movie was released theatrically in Europe, but does anybody know if it was in the US?
Ah, but remember the theatrical version of the pilot would only be a tv print projected in theatres as an open matte film.
Yes it was released in the US. I am not exactly sure when, but I do remember going to see it. It must have been late '78 or early '79. I also remember it being shown on HBO in July of '79.
I remember seeing the Movie at the theater and i can't remember the Particulars but i do remember that the movie had a scene that was too racy for tv and it was cut.

Your are right.

IMDB says:

Quote:
This was the pilot for the TV series that followed (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century). When no network chose to air it, the film debuted in theaters.

I thought it was the other way around - that the movie was so succesful that they started the series.

The VERY memorable opening credits (well, at least very memorable when I was 12 ) were replaced for the TV version. And a line of dialogue were Twiki mentions that it's so cold that he's afraid to "freeze off his ball-bearings".
