Perhaps its someone he doesn't like getting tortured. Jack has been known to do the torturing.

As did I, especially when Jack said to the guy "I thought you were a connoisseur" as he was packing it back up.

I've never heard of the term "snuff film," but I think I get your drift. And I don't feel so bad because it certainly struck me as being something perverse that he showed him.

If you want a crash course you can watch "8MM" with Nick Cage.

Would it be worthwhile to check out the earlier seasons? Were they considerably better?

IIRC season one was. And half of season 2 (the first half). After that...

Some good news if true:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

TV Guide has learned that Lena Olin, who played Sydney Bristow's (Jennifer Garner) mother, Irina Derevko, will return to Alias for the 90-minute season final on May 25. The deal closed last week for the actress to be back.

"It's something I've been trying to do for a long time," show creator J.J. Abrams says. "I was hoping all year that we would be able to pull this off, and we managed to. I have to give a lot of credit to her agents, who were incredibly helpful in making this happen, because this is certainly a story that we wanted to tell. We're really excited about it."

BTW, tonight's episode will be mostly (if not entirely) in Spanish and subtitled since it puts the spotlight on Nadia and her past.
That'll be cool just because usually people in foreign countries speak English on TV
post #458 of 788
Ugh, I can already tell this one is going to suck!

Edit: Well, it was just as bad as I thought it would be. I didn't think anything could be worse until I saw the preview for next week. What the hell happened to this show?
Not a bad episode, I was interested in the "la femme nadia" vibe to her origin story.

Didn't that lady that Vaughn found at the end look not too happy when Vaughn said that Nadia was good?

It looks like these were the episodes that were filmed when Jennifer Garner hurt her back, she was walking funny during the scenes where she was tailing Nadia when she got out of the van.
Well it would explain why the preview for next week wsa Sydney laying down in a box.
Patrick, I wanted to use that La Femme Nadia line

I liked how they used the same type of story structure that they use on Lost. I'm sure some people will complain about it but I think that if it works, use it. Since it was an origin story, I think using the flashbacks was legit and worked well.

I've never seen Alias before but I caught it tonight. What's the brunettes name? Nadia? Holy crap she is drop dead gorgeous! So was the girl playing her as a younger girl. Reminded me of a Spanish Natalie Portman. to both of them.
She played the young and older version.
Same girl, total hotness. Seeing her a lot was the only good thing about tonight's episode IMHO. I seriously think the "Affleck effect" has carried over to this show. Now, not only everything he does sucks, but the same applies to his girlfriend(Elektra, this season of Alias). As Tony Soprano might say, "he's like King Midas in reverse, everything he touches turns to shit".

What was up with Sloan's glasses tonight? Did he get them out of a box of Lucky Charms?

Also, I died laughing when Jack brushed off Marshall during the mission and Marshall responded with: "Vaughn invitied me to lunch (smarmy look)"
The nod to La Femme Nikita was a bit too blatant for my taste, but it was a decent episode. Maybe my standards have lowered

Well, at least your tastes are consistent
post #468 of 788
I love how Sloane dresses like a cross between John Lennon and Goldfinger these days. Seeing his attire is almost the only thing worth tuning in for.
Hopefully Pai Mei taught Syd how to break through that coffin at close range After she gets out, maybe Sloane can send her on a mission to find this season's story arc to get things moving along...

Okay, well I taped last nights ep and watched it this morning and all I have to say is.... how very SD6 of them.

Nadia's back story turned out to be similar to Sydney's life with SD6, only boring. I have no interest in her character or anything about her. Sydney has been been boring the hell out of me too. The only thing semi interesting was the whole Vaughn thing and that only got interesting right at the end when he met that lady in Lisbon.
Where is this season heading? I am really losing interest without a clear story arc. Season 3 wasn't the best but at least it stayed true to the purpose of the show.
Ah, now I know what must be under that hatch on Lost, it's the interesting arc for Alias. Heck, Veronica Mars has been alot more interesting than Alias this season.

IIRC, the exact quote, which I think makes it a wee bit funnier, was "Vaughn asked me out to lunch".

I really liked this episode, and don't quite understand why some people found it so dull. They made Nadia a much more interesting character by giving her some baggage.

I assume she is more than what she seems if only because they went to the trouble of casting Sonia Braga to play her. BTW, in case it wasn't entirely clear due to make-up and stylized cinematography, "that lady that Vaughn found at the end" was the same lady who ran the orphanage and visited Nadia in her prison cell.

I think ABC's desire to get away from the story arc of the show was a mistake in the case of the ratings as well.

Alias scored it's lowest ratings of the season last night, and the lowest ratings in a very long time. www.zap2it.com

4.01 - 10.9/16
4.02 - 8.9/14
4.03 - 9.2/14
4.04 - 8.7/13
4.05 - 7.4/11
4.06 - 7.1/10
4.07 - 6.9/10
4.08 - 6.2/09
4.09 - 6.7/10
4.10 - 6.4/10
4.11 - 5.6/08
4.12 - 4.5/07

I think it was a good device in the beginning as a way to get people into the show, but they really should have kicked it into gear by now. I wasn't as harsh on this season in the beginning as some others were, but even I'm bored now. Season 4 is starting to lose to Season 3 in overall suckage... This just doesn't FEEL like Alias anymore.

So that is why she stood around for most of the episode with the same expression on her face: pouty grimace.

Others are right, they really haven't given Syd much to do. If they are not careful, Nadia will become the focus of the show which last night worked great I thought. I enjoyed her back story a lot.

Man, I thought the same thing! I told my wife that she looked just like NP in the Professional.

BTW, is it whining to ask that people use spoilers when referring to the previews? I don't watch them b/c they give too much away IMO.
I didn't think the ep was that bad, although it had it's flaws. It think the worst flaw was a lack of concise storytelling. Neither my wife nor I "got" the entire plot connection between Vaughn's quest for his father and Nadia's nursemaid. We were scratching our heads at the end. I got that it was the same woman. But Nadia was brought up in Argentina and this woman was in Portugal. There's a lot of ocean between Buenos Aires and Lisbon. Literally and figuratively.

It was neat that it tied together, but dissapointing that we have to wait for more "meat".

And I did not like that they showed the gun and did not fire it (the laser enhancing Enzyte crystal.) Broke rule # 1 of storytelling.

But Nadia is beautiful and a decent little actress and she is also very beautiful. Did I happen to mention...

Finally, there was too much subtitling.

I don't feel like I wasted my one hour of relaxation last night, because I was entertained, but...not so much.

Robert,
Which of the following do you think had the least effect on the Alias ratings:

a) The de-emphasis of story arc by Alias producers
b) American Idol
c) The Survivor-CSI combo moving to Wednesdays during the NCAA tournament
d) Having a re-run rather than a new episode of "Lost" for a lead-in

I would not guess "a)"

Last night, Alias was on against two of the highest rated weekly shows on television, although CSI was a rerun.

Well, I'm not Robert, but do I get to play??? Seriously, while the quality of the shows *has* kind of been all over the map this season, I think it's more a combo of b) and d) ....(CSI was on Wednesday this week, but it was a repeat) Once Lost is back in new eps (next week), I bet ratings will go back up.... just my 2 cents ...

If you look at those ratings, over the 12 week run of the show it has lost viewers in every week but two. To me, that is indicative of the show's downward spiraling quality this year and it certainly doesn't look like it's going to pick up next week. I liked the whole buried alive thing better the first time when it was called Kill Bill Volume 2.

That wasn't even close to the first time.
