Awesome! Magnum P.I. Season One Coming This Summer - Page 2

There's some interesting Magnum news up at TVShows right now. A bonus disc will be included with the set that will include four extra episodes. Included will be the entire Magnum/Simon & Simon crossover as it originally aired. That is, the full, unaltered Magnum episode, followed by the Simon & Simon episode! I'm not completely surprised by this, as Universal has really done a good job with the two TV sets of theirs that I own: Quantum Leap has seen a restoration of the original intros to most of the episodes, and the A-Team has "next on the A-Team" segments that haven't aired in syndication that I know of. It's good to see the care they are putting into their sets.

What will this mean for the next Magnum box set, which will have the crossover episode mentioned above? Theoretically, they could include the self-contained version. It doesn't really matter since the original cut will be available. If I had to guess, I would think it might be the self-contained, or else it would seem logical for the Simon episode to be included as a bonus on the next set. Who knows, though. It really is academic. It's just amazing that the crossover has been addressed. I've seen a lot of concern about that kind of thing with other sets like Buffy and Law & Order. Universal's solved the riddle!

Agreeance.

However, the inclusion of 5th season premiere "Echoes of the Mind" concerns me slightly....

I hope it doesn't mean this is a one-off release for the Magnum series (I know others have raised concerns about the follow-up releases of all these great Uni shows - Northern Exposure, Knight Rider, etc.... also, the observation that there is only so much shelf-space in retail stores!)

Great news nonetheless....

I don't know how the inclusion of those additional episodes bodes for future season releases, but it sure makes this season 1 release pretty awesome!

Agreed. For whatever reason, if this set becomes the only one ever released, at least there are a couple of great episodes from other seasons included. It's a nice surprise to the see the "Simon & Simon" cross-over included!

This move bodes well for the upcoming "Bionic Woman" set from Universal. It had a short first season, including 5 pilot/cross-over episodes with "Six Million Dollar Man". Hopefully Universal will release these episodes as broadcast, like they appear to be doing with "Magnum".

I think it's a very smart move to include a few "special" episodes from later seasons in sets like these. It probably will attract a few more sales from non-hardcore fans. It's like getting a whole season and a few "Best of" episodes as a bonus.

With the inclusion of these episodes, I don't know if I'm going to buy this set or not. I only buy TV sets when all the seasons are released and to me this is a message saying that this will not happen. In fact this is sort of like a combination of a season set and a "best of" set. And I don't like "best of" DVD's!!

I think including these bonus episodes is great! I don't see it in any way as meaning future seasons won't be released. As with all other season sets, if it sells we'll get more, and I think this set will sell quite well!

The Simon & Simon thing is great, although it would have made more sense on a later set. The inclusion of the other bonus episodes is pointless, unless they don't plan to release any more seasons, and I would much rather have preferred a proper reunion featurette of some sort.

Looking very forward to Sept. 7th. This is the only other TV series that I've wanted on DVD, Friends being the other.

Can't wait!

Any news on whether the first season will keep it's original opening theme?

I've read that for syndication it was replaced by the opening theme from seasons 2-8.
To be honest i didn't care for the original theme. I hope it is replaced because it just doesn't seem like magnum without the classic opening theme.
When it was syndicated in my area (on KOFY TV-20), the first 8 episodes of season 1 had the old theme.

I hope they keep the old theme for the old episodes. I'm a purist and want them as they originally aired.

Replacing the theme wouldn't be enough - they would have to use the entire different opening and that would just be wrong.

Personally I liked the original opening better - so I hope Universal will do as good a job on this set as they did with Quantum Leap.

By the way - what about the music?

Magnum used a LOT of songs - here's a partial list:

Any news on whether any of it will be replaced?

I think the music will be intact. There was a lot of songs used in knight rider aswell and they were all there.

Was it originally only on the first eight episodes or the entire first season?
I always remember the entire first season having the theme and then season 2 with the new theme. But Lyle may have hit on something perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me and it was only on the first 8 episodes. Someone mentioned it was only the pilot that had the old theme but i know that is not correct.

The music in "KR" was all "cover" music. I don't think there was any original music used.
I've found it - the first eleven episodes featured the original opening with the original theme. Episode twelve was the first with the new opening.
Matt: your exactly right they were covers my mistake. I dunno how that got by me all these years. So the songs they covered were brand new songs at that time most of them anyway. Talk about being cheap but i guess it worked it fooled me.

Well i guess i can use better examples of quantum leap and northern exposure having there music intact and hopes it will turn out to be the case with magnum.

Sven: nice job finding that may i ask what site you found the info at? so the first 11 orginal and the final 6 new. As i think there are only 17 first season episodes. It works for me !

http://www.tvtome.com/MagnumPI/season1.html

Full of interesting info.

For example - did you know the show was called "Magnum p.i." for the first two seasons and "Magnum, p.i." for the rest of the show?

Is Universal sending out screeners? If so, has anyone found any reviews yet? DVD-Basen doesn't list any yet, but sometimes they don't catch all of the reviews for a while.
I hope to post my review tonight. I was going to try and get it done yesterday, but....well...I'm a slacker!

Gord

Gord: I don't think your slacking. You are probably just enjoying magnum to much to stop and write a review
post #54 of 131
Thanks, Gord! I'll be sure to stop by your site tonight.
No, I slacked last night, I admit it. I got home and started playing with Skpye ('Net telephone program from the makers of KaZAa - http://www.skype.com). Then I realized it was 11:00 and I had to head to bed! I'll be sure to get my work done BEFORE playing tonight

Gord: heh ... just read your review nice job and i am really glad to hear you liked it even more today as back then. I have tried to tell this to some people i know and they just write it off as something that they liked as a kid etc.. I can't wait until tuesday to pick this up. Thanks for the Review!

When they finally get around to casting that magnum movie. Forget clooney and everyone else. Tom Selleck was, is and always will be Magnum give him the role allready!
I agree with Gord in his review about the show holding up well after more than 20 years. I've taped some episodes off the Hallmark channel recently and have been pleasantly surprised to see that I enjoy it just as much now as I did when it originally aired. The character of Magnum liked to have his fun, but when you get down to it he was a very decent and honorable man. I'm looking forward to receiving my pre-order of Season 1.
Today's Best Buy flyer says it's out on Tuesday at a price of $47.99. How much do you want to be that its delayed up here just like Dallas was?
Why get it from Best Buy when Amazon (both .com and .ca) and Deep Discount DVD have it cheaper?
Oh, I might as well mention this: There is NO booklet with the set, though there is a holder for one. Universal included a brochure with some of their upcoming TV titles.
