Do tell re JT, PhilBoy--how is it? JT's Hourglass and Live are on my list to buy. The latter was done by George Massenburg (I'm such a fan boy for him!), the same engineer who did . . .

. . . What's New. My only issue with those Nelson Riddle recordings is that Linda is mixed further out in front of the orchestra than I'd like. But that certainly doesn't preclude me from lamenting that it would certainly appear that Lush Life and For Sentimental Reasons won't make it to DVD-A.

Well at least we can surmise that those UMG and/or WMG albums will be released on Dual . . .

Paul.S,

"JT" on SA-CD is clean and imaging is average (I haven't played the Stereo track yet). Surround use is modest. The only comparison I have is my original vinyl which has not survived well over the years.

"What's New" 5.1 Mix definitely brings Linda forward which at first started me, almost like you could give her a big wet kiss , the Stereo mix really does seems flat in comparison (sorry George), but it is true to the previous releases. Sonically wonderful recording. Nice use of surrounds and instruments are well defined. Tons o' bass. This is probably my fav AdRes.

Just noticed that the She's So Unusual SACD does not include the three live bonus tracks that appear on the remastered CD (although both were released during the same year according to Amazon).

Just curious if anyone is successfully ordering Sony SACD titles via Amazon--are your orders still getting fulfilled, perhaps after a short wait for Amazon to get the product, even for those early single layer titles??

La Postina done brunged me a package from Amazon U.K. 3 new SA-CD's!

Supper Furry Animals' Love Craft which is rather fun high production rock. This 'un is the pick of this litter.

Moloko's S/T ...which is a bit synthesized in all the wrong places for me, I've decided. I like how the girl sings though...

Can's Futue Days...well they're not quite Return To Forever, Sea Level, or Brand 'X' but they're intresting fusion-y music.

Rachael you crack me up sometimes--in addition to having a terrifically diverse music library, you sound like you'd be terrifically interesting to listen to a lot of it with.

Thx for comments on JT and What's New, PhilBoy.

Just finished the first spin of my new Telarc SA-CD of the Mozart "Requiem." I have tempi issues: Runnicles takes several movements faster than the 1986 Shaw/ASO perf I have (also from Telarc). Will be interesting to grip some of the differences between the Sussmayr version I've been listening to for years and this Levin version which is new to me.

Interestingly, if this release is any indication, Telarc has unfortunately abandoned the rounded corners jewel box for their SA-CDs. I liked those.

Rachael B,

Do you have your extensive music/video collection catalogued ? Or do you keep it all in your noggin ?

You could probably put the Library of Congress to shame...

I assume you have your collection racked and packed. That must take up a fair bit of real estate.
Phil, I've never cataloged my collection into a computer program. I could but it would be so much work. Back in the 80's when I got LD and later CD, I cataloged them into a spiral notebook, title and catalog #. I stille do so. I'm on a second spiral notebook at this point. I do keep alot in my noggin. Sometimes I need a cue to get it to come out though. I do forget about albums for years on end sometimes. Recently, I rediscovered The Blasters when I found/remembered my LP of such. Something somebody said on a forum reminded me I had it. So it goes...

Maybe, eventually I'll fed all the data into a program? I've quit cataloging LP's. Otherwise, all the info is in the 2 notebooks...LD, LP, CD, SACD, DVD, and DVD-A.

I've turned my fusebox room into a media storage centre. The walls are lined with bookcases and racks. It's all pretty well ordered except for the 500+ 7" singles that managed to get out of order when I moved a few years back. Putting them back in alphabetical order, there's another project.

yeah, I'm very noggnistic!

Thanks for the kind words Paul! I can be a bit jaded and strange about music at times, really. My brain has become a bit over-saturated with beats and grooves.... You'd be welcome to drop by for a music fix but you seem to live on the wrong end of the kuntry. Kalafornie, hmnnn, that's west of Maynardville, ain't et?

Can "Future Days" SACD
Super Furry Animals "Love Kraft" SACD

Echoing Rachael, the latter is definitely the pick-o-the-litter. I've only been a casual fan of SFA up till now, but the new one strikes me as quite a step forward. And I don't think that's all about the sweet SACD sonics or inspired surround mix. Disagreeing with Rachael just a bit, I really dig the Can release (only one I've ever heard). My expectations were for generic prog-rock cliches, and that's exactly what I didn't get. Very inventive, constantly surprising... I'll certainly be getting more of the Can SACDs!

I like this one a lot. The harmonies are much nicer in MCH and you can get a real feel for each vocalist. That kind of separation is just not possible in two channel.

Rachael B,

I'm green with envy over your collection... you should charge admission .

Enjoy... (as I'm sure you do!)

Rich, I don't have a good feel for Can yet either. This is only the second album by them I've heard myself. The other being Monster Movie. I may warm-up to them more after a few more listens? Fusion is, afterall, very much one of my fav listening avenues!I do know I like Future Days more than Monster Movie after only one listen. It wasn't a good listen though. The phone kept ringing.

When I was writing the other post, I couldn't remember who Can very much reminds me of, now I do remember. That would be Soft Machine one of their contempories. I never listened to Can back in their time. I never listened to them even for the first time until about 2 years ago. They were pretty far off the radar years ago. I mean I was looking for fusion back then too.

So, I don't have a real firm grip on Can, yet. I needs a few more RPM's...
Phil, I ain't even put it online yet. What's to google over. I have more vinyls than anything else. All told, 3000+ vinyls, all sizes and all speeds. Atleast 2500 are albums. Somebody gave me about a 100 vinyls a few months back that I've had fun with. The pick of that bunch is a mono copy of The Ventures' A Go-Go that lived in a box all this time waiting to meet me. Bless it's litle chords!

I have about 50 music LaserDisc's and all them new fangled fur-mats, SA-CD bein' my fav. So, my problem is definitely trying to remember what albums I have, where to find it, and what it is. Just lately I've been makin' me a series of MD's of faux and neo-50's music. That's my latest kick, The Blasters, Daddy Cool, Roy Wood & Wizzard, Stray Cat Setzer...hot dam his latest album, an album of Sun Records covers is red hot and has the song Red Hot too, Webb Wilder, Ruben & the Jets, Kingbees, ect. yeah.... Record Kompanies wish they could clone me. I bet they're after my DNA!

Paul, don't the Thorns sound like time travellers from the 70's. I hear the influences of America, Seals & Crofts, Firefall, 'an such in them. It's one of my fav Sony releases. I wrote a review of it here when it came out....must'a been 3 cycles of the sun ago...? ...or more? I ya read it, you'd find I ultimately liked the stereo mix better, me's self. I wish the Thorns would follow it up...!

Found an HTFer recently with a buncha pre-owned stuff for sale. I got the following from him, getting my disc count up with those discounts.

SA-CD:
Bob Mintzer Big Band - Homage To Count Basie - Looking forward to hearing a Tom Jung-engineered, direct-to-DSD surround recording.

Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops - Epics - Have been diggin' these film score re-record compilations for over 20 years (although I was not as taken as usual with 2000's Mega Movies). As long as Telarc releases SA-CDs, I'll have an SA-CD player.

Indigo Girls - Become You - A Bob Clearmountain m.c. mix.

Earth Wind & Fire - Gratitude - Wonder why Massenburg, who originally recorded this, did not do the m.c. mix?

Tony Bennett & k.d. lang - A Wonderful World

Quincy Jones - Ultimate Collection - Hi rez Q! Bruce Swedien's stuff oughta sound great in hi rez.

E.T. score - One of my fave film scores of all time, re-mixed in surround by the awesome Shawn Murphy.

Babatunde Olatunji - Drums Of Passion - Oughta wake up the neighbors.

Al Jarreau - All I Got

DVD-A:
Bonnie Raitt - Nick Of Time

The Corrs - In Blue

These people saying hi rez aud is dead can bite me.

Paul, that haul has some good ones. There's a barker in there though. The Quincy Jones is one of the first few Universal titles. Woof, woof, it sounds like it's playin' through burlap or somethin' to me. I'd call it my worst sounding Sack-Dee, hmnn, the Bon Jovi that came out about the same time is a contender too...close! Those are 2 losers. The Bonnie Raitt DVD-A is durn good. It growls!

John Legend - Get Lifted (DD)

Why the album is in dual disc I don't know? It sounds no different on either side.

I really was spoiled by Fleetwood Mac's Rumors, personally anyway, not much compares to that. I've said it before and I'll continue to say it.
Rachael, I need to spin the Can disc (my only Can disc!) a few more times myself! I can only say that it thwarted my expectations in a good way on that initial listen. I also understand that "Future Days" may not be typical of their other "classic" releases (but, just by description, it seemed to be the one that would appeal to me most).

In case you folks haven't heard, the album "HOPES AND FEARS" by Keane has been released on CD, Dualdisc, and SACD. If this is an album you like, please be advised that the SACD is considered to be a huge improvement over the CD and equally superior to the Dualdisc. Here's a thread from the Hoffman forums showing the overmaximized/limited nature of the CD/Dualdisc with much nicer waveforms for the SACD. In other words, subjective impressions of superiority are confirmed by objective measurements: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/sh...ighlight=keane

So, having never heard Keane - and generally finding Britpop of the Coldplay type to be unidimensional, maudlin crap - is there a chance I'll like this at all? Please understand my dilemma: there just aren't that many domestic SACD releases anymore, much less from new bands playing contemporary music, and so here's one that's head and shoulders superior to its CD and Dualdisc (die! die, Dualdisc!) counterparts... but none of that does me any good if it just sits on the shelf collecting dust.

So, Keane... overhyped crap or worthy act?
Rich, I like the Keane SA-CD. They rather remind me of Supertramp. It's very piano oriented pop-rock. It don't sound like Coldplay! I don't regret buying it.

Peter Gabriel 3 SACD (Melted Face)

Had that one on a cassette dub from a friend's LP way back in the day. Always liked it, and finally had a $10 Busted Buy coupon plus 10% off, that got it back into the collection. Money well spent. Its a single layer, 2CH release, but the sonics are pretty good, although some tracks are better than others. Having said that, if "Intruder" were the only track on the disc, it would STILL be worth a ten-spot!

Godsmack - forgot the title, but its a mostly acoustic SACD

Sonics are pretty good in both stereo and MC, but I can't get passed the fact that these guys are a damn good Alice In Chains cover band, but not a whole lot more. And with an acoustic album, we get a lot of echo's of the AIC Unplugged set. Having said that, its not bad music, just not particularly original sounding.

Keane -- Are they the group with just drums, piano and vox who performed on Saturday Night Live a couple of months ago? If so, then they're not really my cup of tea, but I actually enjoyed their set. Just different enough to be interesting.

My last few SACD purchases were all reissues of old 3-track RCA Living Stereo titles. They are cheap cheap cheap these days!

You don't care for Britpop. You don't care for Coldplay. I give you zero chance of liking this. That's unfortunate too. It's one of my favorite recent releases and is also an awesome SACD.

PaulDA and Rachael - very much looking forward to the Thorns showing up (maybe today).

I'll second the opinion on the Nick Of Time DVD-A.

A quick review of David Elias - The Crossing SACD. This is even better than 'The Window', putting you right smack dab in the middle of the musicians. Full use of the surround channels but not in a distracting way. You are definately in the centre of the studio with them

On a sadder note - I bought NIN Downward Spiral SACD (2 Disc) and can't get my head around it. Strange since I played Quake to death for years and loved the grinding Reznor stuff in the background. Before I eBay it, PM me if you want a good deal on this played once set.
Rachael--I read your review. I'm a big fan of Matthew Sweet, so the purchase was bound to happen but your review prompted me to buy it. I hear hints of CSN in there as well as those you mention. I too am eager for a follow up.
