What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently? - Page 13

Astonishingly enough, I don't already have a CD or even vinyl copy of this, though I remember it well from its release.
Same here, Paul. And it's the titles that I didn't have before for whatever lame reason that I'm more readily buying on hi rez compared to titles such as Bring the Family and Madman Across the Water which I have on MoFi Ultradiscs that I'm still balking at selling.

Peter Gabriel - So (SACD)

Vince Gill - High Lonesome Sound (SACD)
Thx for helping keep the thread alive, Danny.

If the remastered CD I saw is any indication, I balked at the So SA-CD given the changes to the cover art and track order (and the sloppy lack of changing the session musician credits to conform to the new track order). My anal quibbles aside, how's the s.q. compared to the original CD, Danny?

I have the High Lonesome Sound DVD-A and, perhaps because this album was recorded digitally, I did not find a major improvement in s.q. compared to the original CD after an admittedly cursory listen.

Picked up Roxy's Avalon & Bowie's Ziggy recently. Avalon is great while Ziggy has it's moments.
Biggest suprise is Frankie goes to Hollywood's Rage I found used for $5. Fun stuff great in surround.
I now have 3 Elton SACD (0 LPs, CDs, tapes, LDs, DVDs)

Paul,

Many years ago, I had the CD to PG's So. Somehow I sold the CD and until recently, I have no PG CDs at all. I picked up PG's Hit album and I started thinking about picking up some of his SACDs. I have only listened to the SACD of So once and it's a slight improvement on the tracks that also appeared in Hit. However, the SACD is now only $13.99 at my local Best Buy, which is about the same as the remastered CD.

As for Vince Gill's High Lonesome Sound, I have only checked out the CD layer (HDCD-encoded) and the sound quality is very good. It's going into the SACD player real soon.

Just picked up the SACD reissue of the late-70s prog-pop classic, Jeff Wayne's "The War Of The Worlds". Sounds great - this is one album that always cried out to be in surround, and now it is. Ulla!!!

Hmmmm....I haven't purchase an SACD in a while. Need to work on the Peter Gabriel catalog, the Police catalog, and the Tony Bennett catalog.

Meanwhile, this SACD arrived in the mail today....

It's "The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto" w/ "The Yellow River Piano Concerto" with (the Chinese) Central Philharmonic Orchestra. Surprisingly, it's on the Philips label. I wonder how this SACD compares to the SACD of the same concertos that featured Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Edit: Actually, I did purchase Nickel Creek's self-titled album on SACD. Totally forget about it.

Billy Joel - The Stranger SACD (OOP) via eBay - very nice mix
Peter Malick Group w/Norah Jones - New York City SACD

on the way
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust SACD
Thielemann / Orff - Carmina Burana DVD-A
Jeff Wayne - War Of The Worlds SACD

Rachael - How's that Harry Connick title?? Could it have used some surround channels rather than stereo?
Paul, I haven't listened to it yet. Maybe soon I'll spin it up? I'm curious too. Somebody gave me 85 LD's last week and there's 20 or so I wanna watch. I've been a bit smitten with them's. I'll get back to ya.

Joe,

You just reminded me to pick up the "War of the Worlds" SACD. Thanks.

just picked up the Living Stereo SACD of Mahler's 4th. Unfortunately I still have yet to pick up a universal player (still just working with DVD-A), so until I do, I'll just enjoy the hybrid-ness of the disc.

Eagerly looking forward to enjoying George Massenburg's work on the DVD-A of an album I've not heard before, Randy Newman's Little Criminals--recently shipped by Amazon.

Although this is old news, I don't think it has been mentioned in this thread: the lack of any new releases for quite some time would indicate that seminal audiophile label Digital Music Products has stopped releasing SA-CDs. Did anyone buy Flim & the BBs Tricycle on SA-CD?

Also, recently noticed that, at least as of this typing, Amazon is out-of-stock on Luther Vandross' Dance With My Father DVD-A.

The recent Universal Music Group announcement of that label's support of Blu-ray (what exactly does this mean?!) has me even more vexed about whether to buy a lot of the hi rez titles I want now, or wait a year longer and see if one of the hi def DVD formats becomes the carrier for hi rez audio.

Also, does anyone have any comparative s.q. comments on the three versions of Luther V.'s debut, Never Too Much? In addition to the standard CD and SA-CD, it looks like there was a remastered CD released in 2001 (a year after the SA-CD--it's Sony, so go figure).

Fleetwood Mac - Rumors - DVD-A
thanks to this DVD-A I've heard stuff on the album, I hadn't on any of the other releases I've got. The Commentary by the band on each track is really cool as well.
I got kind of spoiled by this release so I don't know of any other releases that have this much special features on it. So my Hi-Res collection is just this one disc.

Matt Fisher et al.:

In the words of Roscoe P. Coltrane, "GOOD NEWS, Boss--good news!"

Pursuant to our exchange back in April following post #261, the Runnicles/ASO & Chamber Chorus/Telarc new DSD recording of the Mozart "Requiem" dropped last week on hybrid m.c. SA-CD!

http://www.telarc.com/SACD/title.asp...8LXRRH627845R7

Excuse me while I go give Jeff Bezos mo' money . . .

Paul: I actually wound up picking up the CD of the Runnicles/ASO Requiem the other day and it's a great piece. I completely had forgot about it coming to SACD or I would've picked it up for sure, guess when I eventually do upgrade my system (yeah, I'm still talking about getting a universal player), that will be one of the discs I double dip on.
Glad you got the Wolfie, Matt.

Frankly though, I wish Telarc would drop their SA-CD price two or three dollars (to halfway between their SA-CD and CD price points) and stop CD production altogether (or at least for the titles they release on hybrid SA-CD).

If you haven't pulled the trigger on a uni player yet (!), I suggest you start watching/continue to watch the audio specs of HD DVD and Blu-ray closely.

Hey! PaulT! I finnaly listened to the Harry Connick. It's sonically OK, rather average for the format. It's levels are set rather low. I had to amplify it much more than usual to get the volume I'm accustomed to.

It's been French week for me. I got 3 French language SA-CD's.

The one I'm really smitten with is Zazie's Rodeo. It's intresting pop rock and it has a DVD included too. I've listened to the album 10 times in the past week. I'll get around to the DVD eventually.

Also: Calog3ro's S/T & Patricia Kaas's Mademoiselle Chante...
Rachael - thanks for the feedback on that disc. I'll probably give it a pass. Will be home in a week and I have a stack of music to listen to and movies to watch.
It's not hi rez of course, but the recent arrival of the DTS CD of George Strait's One Step At A Time occasions a comment on the number of UMG titles that were licensed to DTS for release on DTS CD that then never were released in either hi rez format. Ironically, these DTS CDs are bordering on having a little longer product life than their SA-CD and DVD-A big brothers: I think all of them are still available via DTS' Website.

(Yes, I grant that that may be because fewer people originally bought them!)
