My latest purchase, Berlioz Requiem on RCA Living Stereo SACD. Should arrive soon. Have 13 of these RCAs now and not been disappointed yet.

The RCAs are superb-I agree completely. Do you have the Earl Wild disc with Fiedler?
Not yet. Would buy them all at once if I could. But a three year old and another child on the way has a way of re-prioritizing your expenditures.

How's that Orbison disc sound Rachael?

So is the Black and White mix from a PCM master or DSD? Since this mix is from the original analog tapes you would think the engineer would do an analog to PCM mix and a separate analog to DSD mix.

Who knows? If it is transferred twice to the two recording formats I wonder which one sounds the best? The PCM surround mix is 24/96 (from 24/192 masters?), and the SA-CD consumer version is, of course, 1 bit/2.8 MHz (some DSD workstations use a modified multi-bit DSD converter with 5.6 MHz sampling and there was a rumor on the AVS Forum that an improved DSD version may have been added to the Blu-Ray specs.).

Hmmm...

Interesting! If you don't mind, drop another line if you hear of more developments on that front, Dan.

This is also being reported in a British hifi journal according to Ole Lunc Christensen as well.

Now that I've got a universal DVD player (Yamaha DVDC750), I picked up my first two SACDs, both hybrid CD and 2/5.1 channel SACD:

- Godsmack's "The Other Side"
- Ludacris' "Chicken N Beer"

I'm very impressed with the Godsmack, it sound wonderful. The Ludacris I'm not so sure about just yet but it may grow on me.

Also not sure if I mentioned but a while back I picked up Moist's best-of collection "Machine Punch Through" on DVD-A. Very good 5.1 mix done by Jeff Martin of The Tea Party, applied to a decent collection of Moist tracks. Good sonics.

The Police - Greatest Hits (DTS-CD 5.1)

Norah Jones - Come Away With Me (hybrid SACD 2.0/5.1)

I'm now up to 20 high-res discs! Woohoo!
Scott,

Where did you get Bat Out of Hell in 5.1 surround? I thought it was only a stereo SA-CD.

Thanks!

Dan

Dan,

I got it at the Best Buy in Bellingham, WA on my way back to Vancouver from Seattle. I was quite surprised to find it myself. I think they had one more copy after I bought mine.

Matt: Do tell re the Verdi "Requiem." It's the Kirov/Gergiev on Philips, yeah?

How's the perf, recording and surround mix? Long been debating getting this over a plain ol' CD version that's been on my list for years, the Atlanta/Shaw on Telarc (versus waiting for a new Atlanta/Spano SACD from Telarc, which I'd surmise is in the offing since they've done the Berlioz "Requiem" and have the Mozart "Requiem" skedded for August . . .).

Yes it's that one. I've listened to it about 3 or 4 times now, such an amazing piece. I shouldn't be the one to recommend a title on how it sounds though because I have a rather low end system unfortunately. The surround mix is in 44.1/16, and stereo in 48/20. The surround mix does give a nice atmosphere though, and at $15, a worthy purchase in my opinion.

You say Mozart's 'Requiem' is coming to SACD in August? Interesting, just another reason for me to get a universal player already, that's an amazing piece. Hopefully over this summer I'll make some extra cash and finally upgrade my speakers and player.

That is a horrible recording of the Requiem. STAY AWAY. Bocelli is hopelessly lost. The tenor role is quite demanding; not meant for someone who sings 'Verdi for quiet Friday afternoon' CD's. Though it's not on SACD, do your self a favor and pickup Gardiner's white hot version, featuring far better soloists, the unmatched Monteverdi Choir, and the razor sharp ORR.

Thx for the comments re the Verdi 'Req,' Matt and Seth. Thx also, Seth, for the tip on the Gardiner 'Req.' The Amazon editorial and customer comments are ebullient.

Yeah, Matt--excitingly enough, Wolfie's 'Req' on Telarc SACD was announced last fall. Drop in on telarc.com now and and again; maybe sign up for their e-mail newsletter(s).

Danny: Thx for the mention of the Sam Cooke Portrait Of A Legend SACD. I didn't know that existed and it's an excellent candidate for my effort to come up with a list of the "Top 20 r&b/soul albums."

Paul, no problem. This is my first Sam Cooke SACD (or any format) and all of his other titles are listed at sa-cd.net (just do a search using "Cooke"). It's a great deal because it's only $14.99 at Best Buy.

Will be there when I get home in 3 weeks:

Deep Purple, Machine Head - DVD-A
Dorian Michael, Acoustic Blues - DVD-A (AIX 96/24)
Layla, Derek & the Dominoes - SACD
Vivaldi, Four Seasons, Juritz, LMP - DVD-A

If the AIX records release of Dorian Michael is anything like the Laurence Juber release I bought (he also plays on this recording) it should sound pretty sweet. If you have not seen the AIX catalogue I suggest you try some of them out:
http://www.aixrecords.com/index.html

The Naxos release of Vivaldi 4S is 14.99CAD - priced right!

Picked up:

Beck "Guero" DVD-A/CD package. Excellent music and sonics. I am glad Beck is over his Sea Change depression, and putting out more upbeat music. Another great Elliott Scheiner surround mix. Highly recommended

Ray Charles "Genius Loves Company" SACD. Great music to throw on the Hi-fi and relax to after a days work.

Anyone know how the Juritz DVD-A recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons stacks up against Anne-Sophie Mutter's? I have the latter and it's some great violin work, but I don't think the mix is as good as it could be. I've heard that the Juritz mix is very good, but the playing not up to Mutter. Any comments?
Matt,

I based my purchase of the Juritz recording on these reviews:

http://www.highfidelityreview.com/re...umber=17202764
http://www.highfidelityreview.com/re...wnumber=435054

The Juritz recording is 96/24 but no LFE 3/2.0 (I use an ICBM so it doesn't matter to me).
Annie-Sophie Mutter is 48/24 3/2.1

Will let you know how it sounds in 3 weeks
