Review please.  :)

I first listened to the Doobies on my upstairs system one day last week and thought it sounded a bit off for Mofi. I put it on my best system last night and changed my mind. After last night's listen I decided that several cuts were not just not all that well recorded or the tapes were beat up, maybe some of both...? The cuts that have horns, well, the horns sound a bit muffled. It Keeps You Runnin' has that flat made for AM radio sound. The other hit song, Takin' It To The Street, sounds less AM to me. I'm thinkin' this one was never a stellar sounding album.

Sounds like a pass.

!!!! One of my top 5 albums.  This is a must-buy for me even though I have the MoFi version. Can't recommend the ClassicAlbums dvd highly enough either.

Taking this thread full circle back to it's first post over 6 years ago.

My latest Hi-Rez purchase is Trey Anastasio's self titled DVD-A.

Has anyone heard Trey's Shine DualDisc?

Is it worth searching out?

I have been buying discs faster than I can play them. I got the Trey Anastasio self-titled album which I love to play on my DVDA player

Craig:

Oooooh.  I am VERY curious about your impressions of the NKC discs.  Please let us know what you think.  i'm also pretty curious about the Miles discs.

A lot of people in THIS THREAD are also interested about the NKC discs.

Okay, give me another day or two to collect my thoughts....need some more listening time.  But I don't see how anybody who is a fan of the artists or the genres could possibly be disappointed.  Visit http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/ for much more qualified feedback than I could possibly give.

Another one came in today:

'Ritchie Valens Greatest Hits'

Audio Fidelity SACD, mastered by Steve Hoffman

Found it new in the shrinkwrap on the AMZ marketplace for $15!  (just had a cracked jewel case.)

The Valens is very good.

just picked up MFSL's Rock of Ages by the Band

I got Elton John's self titled album a week or so ago.  It is the only EJ I didn't have on SACD, and it does not sound good.  It seems to be noise reduced to death.  Impressive for a few seconds, but downright annoying after that.

That's a good one.  I am buying all of The Band on MFSL.

That's a really good one Phil.   Good sound quality and a classic album.

I haven't heard it, Blair, but note that--not unlike so many Duals at this point--it's cheap enough to just do a blind buy.  Used copies start at 6 cents.

Thanks for mentioning these (and the link to the other thread, Mike).  I'm feeling that delicious ex post facto smartness now for having withheld purchase of these on pricey DCC gold CD for all these years now.

You're a smart guy.  And, you're welcome.  I'm mighty itchy to pick up one of those Cole discs.  Since the one I really want (After Midnight Sessions) has been postponed to October, I think I'm going to pick up Just One of Those Things later this month.

=====================

In the meantime, I picked up a Dual Disc of ELP's Isle of Wight live CD today.  Something I just happened to stumble on.  Haven't heard much about that disc...

Just a "heads up"/FYI:  If Amazon Marketplace is any indication, the hybrid multichannel re-release of the Titanic score SA-CD might be getting less common at $15 and under prices.  There have been many available at that level for years and now the cheapest is more than twice that.  Finally decided to go ahead and replace the original stereo disc I sold a long time ago (after e-mailing the seller first to make sure it was the right version of course).

There IS a hybrid multi-channel SACD of Titanic OST? Link, please, all I have is the dts CD, which sounds great, but can only be played in my DVD player, and is impossible to rip to wav :(

Howdy Mikael.

Here's the Amazon link:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001ENY7G/ref=oss_product

Upon going to SA-CD.net to get their link . . .

http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/1828

. . . I noted the low price ($12.61) next to the Amazon.com link in the upper right-hand corner of the page.  Clicking that takes one here:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00016B93A/?tag=sacdinfocom-20

I don't know what this is.  "Music from the Motion."  Ooops.  July 2008 release date.  An import.  Curious.  Anyone know what this is?

Re ". . . the dts CD, which sounds great, but can only be played in my DVD player . . ."

Try that disc in your CD player.  My understanding is that DTS on CD is PCM-encoded and therefore different from the way it is presented on DVD.  I think any transport with a digital out can play DTS CDs.

You can use foobar2000 with the dts plugin to play your cd on the computer.  Then you can downmix from within the program multichannel to stereo if you desire and output to wav, flac, mp3, et al.  you could also output to multichannel wav or flac if you wanted.

Paul: You are right, of course. What I meant was I can not play this in CD players that have internal DACs, only those with digital out, so not in the car, portable CD player etc. And thanks for the link, I went surfing and actually found it on a European site (Zavvi) for a good price, so here's hoping I actually get the SACD and not a regular CD.

Craig: I'll check that out. I can play it with VLC player, downmixed, but have not been able to capture the downmixed waves yet.

(strange how the post editor won't let me write anything below the quotes...)

I just bought the DualDisc of Talking Heads "Remain In Light" last week.

Nat King Cole. I would love to get an LP album or sacd by him. About 50 years ago, we had a record of his. The only song I can remember at the moment was "Goodnight Irene". I used to sing that line (not song--can't sing worth a cr...) over and over in my head. Loved it. Ahhh, the memories. Thx, guys.

Agreed

MoFi hit a grand slam with this one :)

Latest hi-rez purchases:

Foghat - Fool For the City,  MoFi SACD

Toto - Hydra,  JSACD

Nat King Cole - The Very Thought of You,  AP SACD

Flaming Lips - Embryonic Ltd.Ed.,  includes DVD @ 24/96 LPCM

I bought The Yes Album MoFi also.  They did a great job with it.  I probably need to go ahead and get Fragile.
