I guess I forget to post the scan to the "Dances With Wolves" soundtrack SACD....

I've recently noticed a "Special Edition" of Bat Out of Hell - Meatloaf in my local stores--costing about $19.99.  HERE'S the Amazon listing (with the track listings).

It says it is a two disc set...with the second disc being a DVD with a different selection/ordering of the BOoH songlist.

Can anyone tell me if Disc #2 is a DVD-A, DVD-V, concert footage, 5.1 or 2.0?  I cannot seem to find this info anywhere.
It's a Sony title, Mike--it's not going to be a DVD-A.

"The 30th Anniversary Special Edition includes a DVD of videos from the album, and two live tracks."

http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7293459&style=music

It might be a truncated version of this standalone DVD release (which is a re-release of something that was on VHS according to some customer reviews/comments).

On a different note:  the The Big Picture Telarc/Kunzel film score compilation SA-CD has a sticker on the back of the jewel box that reads "The Stereo program on this SACD appears only on the hybrid CD layer in order to accomodate the over 76 minute multi-channel surround program."  Sure enough:  when I played it on the 2-channel rig upstairs on the Pio 563A set to default to a stereo SACD layer, it was notably bass-less and I checked the display:  it read that it was playing the m.c.  So I have to switch the player setting to prioritize CD layer playback if I want to play this disc in stereo.  Had never seen an SA-CD authored this way before now.

Thanks a lot, Paul.

I figured since there was no audio info on the release itself...DD 5.1, for example...that I was probably going to be out of luck.  Thought some of Meatloaf's finest in surround sound would be worth a listen!

Although maybe if it's the video with the version of "Paradise..." with Ellen Foley....

Re "Thought some of Meatloaf's finest in surround sound would be worth a listen!"

I'm sure it is.  I feel like I'm/we're aiding and abetting your avoiding the obvious remedy to your having to do some of this discographic due diligence:  buy a freakin' SA-CD player!

As soon as I get the Oppo BDP-83 in hopefully the next few weeks, you can have one of my Pio 563As for, say, $35.  That's a bargain, even before we factor in the spousal bliss I facilitated via encouraging your purchase of the GYBR DVD-A.

I'm in!  It's a deal!

I should probably start buying SACDs now, huh?!?

I see those a heckuva lot more often than DVD-As, I'll tell ya that!  Shouldn't Blu-ray players be able to play SACDs?  I was very disappointed that mine can't.

"Spousal bliss" may be out the window if she sees another disc player come into the house, though.  I may have to disconnect my LD Player or Betamax in order to make room!

RE "Shouldn't Blu-ray players be able to play SACDs?"

Fundamentally different disc structure / pit depth / spec.  Yes, Sony is a BDA member but hardly the only one.  Even their first BD player, the BDP-S1, didn't play CDs (!).

I'll PM you about the Pio.

Although the Amazon customer comments on the album are mixed/negative, I recently stumbled across a new copy of Sting's Sacred Love on DVD-A for only a penny so I of course went for it.  Although gimmicky, I like the video content accompanying each track's playback--it's what the song would look like in ProTools.  Take that, SA-CD!

SACD--Friedrich Kleinhapl (cello) and Andreas Woyke (piano)--Franck and Rachmaninoff Sonatas (autographed copy by Kleinhapl--saw them play last night at an excellent concert in an intimate venue)

I'm expecting the RCA Living Stereo SACD Vienna soon, maybe tomorrow. It features a variety of polkas and waltzes in 3-channel stereo. I really have been loving these wonderful recordings from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s.

The RCA series is great.  I have several dozen of them.

Somewhat related news--Rhino layoffs.

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118009163.html?categoryid=16&cs=1

Quote:
Company said Rhino will evolve into an entity that "handles WMG's global digital catalog initiatives, film, TV, vidgame and commercial licensing, and name and likeness representation for legendary artists."

Move comes as sales of physical recorded music continues to decline steeply. Rhino has long been considered the industry standard for boxed set retrospectives, but demand for such high-ticket items has been strangled by the music market slump and shift to digital sales.

I am very new to the activity of seeking out/purchasing SACDs.  So, I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I found two of the RCA Living Stereo series SACDs at my local Borders for just $11.99 today.  I was pleased.

I found the Van Cliburn/Rachmaninoff 2nd & Tschaikovsky 1st and the Rubinstein/Chopin Ballades & Scherzos discs at that price.
Mike, you can purchase the RCA Living Stereo SACDs from deepdiscount.com for $8.67 each with free shipping on all orders. I've gotten a few that way, and a few at Borders as well, one for $6.99 after a 5 off coupon. The Tchaikovsky 1st piano concerto is really great. Recently I got the Pictures at an Exhibition disc and it is wonderful. And the Living Stereo Saint Saens 3rd (organ) symphony is pretty spectacular as well. My next one is going to be Berlioz Symphony Fantastique, followed by Dvorak's New World Symphony.

Mike,

Welcome to the club, not that I actually buy that many SACDs.   Did you actually buy Paul.S's Pio 563A already?

Can't remember if I picked up that Van Cliburn classic now -- I'm pretty sure I did though (or was it just the old redbook CD version?), but I probably never got around to listening to it anyhow.

Hmmm...  Hadn't realized that DDD has them at such nice prices.  I might need to pick up some from them then.  I might go for the Berlioz Symphony Fantastique SACD, but I think I actually already bought that one a long while back, LOL.   If not, might be of interest to my kids too as they are learning to play some simpler arrangement of one section of that piece, ie. March to the Scaffold, in their new orchestra class...

Thanks, Dan!  I will definitely be checking that out.  Is this a good thread to discuss bargains on SACDs and good vendors?  Or is there another thread somewhere where that is done?  I've got a LOT of questions on that subject.

She was actually quite supportive of the whole thing.    Like much of my software...some of my hardware is used.  Hell, I actually won my Blu-ray player in an HTF contest!

I purchased my sub used, too, from another HTF member.  I'm at a time of my life right now where I can't spend much on the hobby (makes the RoundUps seem rather ironic, eh?!?  ).  So, anytime I can get a pretty good deal on something which I enjoy so much...she's all for it.  Just one of the many reasons I love that woman...and why we've been married 27+ years!

I can definitely relate on the WAF.   And I too try to go the used market route whenever/wherever it makes sense, and indeed, ~1/2 of my A/V gear are used as well -- actually, most of my audio gear were acquired used, but generally not the video side in large part because it usually makes more sense to just buy new for something like a big TV.   I even bargain hunt for quality old violins (among other things) on eBay although violin shopping is quite tricky -- I've probably overdone it w/ that though as we own waaaay more instruments than we can play now (and may at some point look to move some back onto the used market in one way or another)...

Anyway, we're probably a lot alike, except I probably splurge a bit more  (and is only ~1/2 way to where you are w/ the anniversaries and the kids growing up).   I only just recently started dealing w/ all them tween issues, et al. and gotta deal w/ them even to the extent of owning Mamma Mia (used and very cheaply of course ) and Twilight (not used w/ bullet totally bitten ) on BD -- gosh, it's sometimes hard to get why they're both sooooo very popular...

Seems like the good Lord decided to throw some TDAS (Tweenaged Daughter Appeasement Syndrome) my way since the WAF has been going well...

I've not posted in this thread before, I don't have a lot of SACDs, but when I saw Dan's post about the RCA Living Stereo, I wanted to affirm what he said.  I don't have the Tchaikovsky 1st piano concerto, but I do have Pictures at an Exhibition, Saint Saens 3rd Symphony (Organ), Symphony Fantastique, and the New World Symphony among a few others.  They all sound great.  I'm particularly pleased with the performances on Pictures at an Exhibiton and on the Organ Symphony.  La Mer is paired with the Organ Symphony and it's very good.  It's my favorite recording of La Mer.  Also, the pairings on the Pictures disc are very good.  My favorite piece on that disc after Pictures is A Night on Bald Mountain.  I also like Rimsky-Korsakov's Schehrazade.  (OK, I had to pause for a moment and put that in the PS3, so it's playing now while I'm typing. ) While it's not my favorite recording of this work, it is right up there and it's the only one I have on sacd and it's very, very good.

I'm not an expert on music, but I don't think anyone with a SACD player could wrong with the RCA Living Stereo recordings on SACD.  Oh, and me thinks I'll be getting the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto in the future.

It's a classic Van Cliburn recording Frank...and you get Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto with it, too.  How can you go wrong?!?

THAT recording is one I grew up with.  My dad has a VERY limited repertoire of songs he deems listenable.  And that particular recording is one I've heard thousands and thousands of times (no joke!).  I've never heard it quite so clean and clear as this SACD, though!
I consider myself an enthusiastic amateur fan of "classical music" and I have to say that I find three ways that are excellent introductions to classical music (sadly, only some of them are SACD/DVD-A).  They are not always the "best" recording available of a particular piece, but they are rarely anything less than quite good.

RCA Living Stereo series on SACD--I have a lot of them and I've yet to be disappointed.

Naxos--I have about 20 DVD-As, one SACD and a lot on CD. Anytime I come across a DVD-A or SACD from Naxos, I scoop it up.

The "Great Recordings of the Twentieth Century" series from EMI--sadly no MCH hi-res but very good releases.

Best Buy has a 25% Off sale on regularly priced music so I picked up:

3 Doors Down - Away From the Sun SACD
Sarah Vaughan - Sarah Vaughan SACD
Donald Fagen - Morph the Cat DVD-A
John Mellencamp - Life Death Love & Freedom 24/96 DVD

There are a couple of other Hi-Rez discs I might go back and get while I'm at it.

Marshall Crenshaw s/t Mobile Fidelity SACD

Although not high rez, KIND OF BLUE DualDisc.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood SACD

Marshall Crenshaw self titled SACD from Mobile Fidelity.

Can I get any feedback from anyone here who has the SACD of A Charlie Brown Christmas?

This is a disc I'd snap up in a minute--based on my familiarity with and enjoyment of the material.  However, I am wary as the recording of this music has never struck me as something that would fare well under audiophile treatment--way too much tape hiss and lack of frequency range.

Thanks!

Thanks Paul!    I'm still getting the hang of this new avenue of the hobby.  Especially the part of where to get good deals on software.

I'll be sure to bookmark sa-cd.net...
