Just curious if anyone can comment on the sound quality of the new SACD release of NIN's The Downward Spiral? I seem to remember the CD having pretty decent quality for a rock recording, and was wondering if anyone has done any serious listening/comparing in 2 channel between the CD and SACD?

Danny - Just curious where you got your Best Of Simple Minds and if you found it at a good price: Amazon has long listed it as a pricey import ($54.99 - doh!).

And how is it in terms of s.q.?

Paul,

To be honest, this is my first Simple Mind disc, hi-rez or otherwise. The sound quality is pretty good, especially when you consider I got it brand-new for $21.00. I purchased it off of ebay from a seller in Hong Kong; they charged me $6.00 for shipping. Still $27.00 for the 2 disc SACD is very good.

Below is a link to the seller's current offer on the "Best of Simple Mind" SACD....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...070509872&rd=1

I mentioned it recently at the Steve Hoffman site (I am aka soundboy ). BTW, the seller recently was featured in a TNT-Audio.com article, so I was able to put a face to the seller. My SACD took 15 days to arrive (as verified by the postmark) and was brand-new.

I picked the Clapton and Elton's that I did not already have (Slow Hand, 461 Ocean, and Tumbleweed), also via yourmusic.com.

I hope they never wise up to how cheap they are selling SACD, and only wish they would also sell DVD-A.

I am really impressed with Art Pepper Getting Together on Fantasy SACD-absolutely incredible performance and sound.

Just to re-broach something discussed earlier in this thread (largely between Danny T. and I WRT The Stranger): has anyone else found early Sony single layer SACD titles to be getting hard to find/going OOP lately?

Paul,

I think you are right about the Sony single-layer SACDs. I think many SACD buyers have realized Sony is very unlikely to reissue those single-layer titles on hybrid SACD (the only one to be reissued in the US is the soundtrack to Titanic), so the Sony titles are being snapped up. In most cases, the Sony single-layer SACD is the best sounding version of that particular recording.

Picked up last week on Sack Dee:

NIN "The Downward Spiral" Deluxe Edition
Who "Tommy" Deluxe Edition

NIN was on sale for $17 and the Who was on sale for $20 at Best Buy. Not sure if the sale is still going on however.

I also purchased the 2 disc Tommy "Deluxe Edition" SACDs for $20.00 from Best Buy. You also get a free "Deluxe Edition" sampler CD for purchasing any "Deluxe Edition" title.

Also will be receiving SACD of "The Sound of Music"....purchased off of ebay for $17.00.

J: Any general comments on Downward Spiral SACD, or particular comparative comments on it versus the Dual Disc?

Danny: Thx for reply. I guess I'm still waiting for something to nudge me to either sh*t or get off the pot on over a dozen single layer Sony titles that I want for which the (new) prices have not come down in over a year of my keeping tabs. For several reasons, I tentatively resolved a short while ago to cool out a bit on getting everything I want and just focus on the titles that I've never owned at all (as opposed to double dipping on titles I already have on CD, selling that CD and losing significant functionality [car playback ability] in exchange for the arguably marginal increase in SQ on what are all non-DSD recordings).

There are about dozen such titles and I just checked Amazon and, with the exception of the L.A. Philharmonic disc of Bernard Herrmann Film Scores (which I have on CD and love), all of them are still available.

One of the things I'm in vexed analysis paralysis over right now is the possibility that Blu-ray will not support DSD. If that proves to be true, all these single layer SACD titles are going to require an SACD player for playback. How many manufacturers are still going to be in that segment in 2, 3, 5 years? Sony and maybe Pio?

Paul,

Perhaps I am optimistic because I do think SACD will be around in the next 5 years or so. At this point, we can rule out it will ever be a mainstream format, but I think it will do nicely as an "audiophile" format. New titles are continue to be issued....with 161 news titles thus far in the new year. Hardware are continuing to be released....Sherwood Newcastle just joined the SACD camp by announcing 2 new universal players at the CES, where Pioneer, Toshiba, and Samsung announced updated universal players. Yamaha and Onkyo both now market SACD-capable players under $300.00. And Sony has yet to announce their audio line yet. There are no guarantees that Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will succeed in the marketplace even if they are techically superior. Just think, MiniDisc is still around and Sony continues to refine and push the limits of its performance even when music companies have stopped issuing pre-recorded MD titles.

Paul - What's the title on that LA Philharmonic - Bernard Hermann title? I'm a huge fan of his works, actually just turned in a big research paper on him, didn't realize this existed, sounds awesome.

Matt:

Currently out-of-stock at these Amazon links, but available elsewhere online I'd imagine. These links will at least let you see the cover art and track listing. It's a damn terrif album; CD is Dolby Surround encoded; recorded at historic Todd-AO Scoring Studio in L.A. The perf of "Scene D'Amour"--the love theme--from Vertigo is da boooomb. Absolutely beautiful.

The Film Scores on SACD and on CD.

damn, at least the SACD is obtainable, and at under $20, unfortunately I only have DVD-A capabilities, and the CD, only 1 used copy available for $65!? Looks I'll be hoping for someone to let one go on eBay for now, thanks, looks terrific, and btw Hermann's Vertigo score is my absolute favorite.
