Some of the old classics are on SACD, eg. Elton John.

The Marshall Creenshaw went by so fast, it's a shame they didn't do a double-header of him, akin to the Little Richard's. His songs are almost as short as Little Richard's. It sounded good to me. I used to have the LP. I kept thinking about my old Philips 212 TT I used to play the LP on.

I'm listening to the Doobies as I type this....an' I'm just to the part about Jesus now...I'm picturin' my ole Philips again. I had this LP too. It's long gone. If Mofi would just add a little surface noise to these SA-CD's......

They sound so faithful, like a Mofi should.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

It was impossible to find Depeche Mode "Black Celebration" SACD at any price I was willing to pay so I purchased the 96kHz/24-bit DVD-V. The same choice was made for the same reason on the Genesis 1970-1975 SACD/DVD-V (NTSC) box set but then I decided to buy the SACD/DVD-V (PAL) box set, now I have it on CD/DVD-V (NTSC)/DVD-V (PAL)/SACD. That was still less expensive than buying the proper SACD/DVD-V (NTSC) set. Apparently the 1970-1975 set was a much bigger seller than the first two.

For a while the Genesis box was available on Amazon UK for $120 but it went fast. I settled on a very cheap DVDA set from Borders during the 50% off sale. I just need the red box now.

I recall having an understanding of the complicated nature of the Genesis SA-CD releases but now I need a refresher.

By 96/24 DVD-V, you're referring to the DVD with (lossy) DTS audio, yes? That was what U.S. consumers could by on a title-by-title basis (as in, individual albums as opposed to box sets), right?

The NTSC DVD-Vs with the video material accompanied by SA-CDs were/are only available in the box sets, yes?

So for a drooler like me who doesn't want the box sets but who instead just wants Trick Of the Tail or preferably Selling England By the Pound (or of course The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway) and who does not have a region-free DVD player, I'm kinda screwed IIRC, yes? My only choice is the box set with DTS DVD-Vs, right?

And the fact that I happen to be in London right now doesn't help because any HMV that might still have any Genesis SA-CDs will almost certainly be accompanied by PAL DVDs, right?

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Just as Telarc fades from the SACD scene, here comes Reference Recordings' second SACD release....

Exotic Dances From the Opera

The CD layer is HDCD-encoded, naturally.

Yes, the Genesis DVD-V's, both PAL and NTSC are 96kHz/24-Bit DTS and it is of course lossy. Also included is standard Dolby Digital but the DTS sound is much better this time. I believe the Genesis SACD/NTSC DVD box sets and any individual albums were all manufactured for the Asian NTSC markets while Warner has the rights for North America and released CD/DVD sets. Whether the individual albums were made available in SACD/NTSC DVD, I don't know really.

I wouldn't say you are screwed, it is my opinion the 96/24 DTS DVD-V's all sound so close to the SACD that I would say don't lose any sleep over it and just get any albums you want in the CD/DVD-V sets. There is extra material in the box sets that can't be obtained by purchasing the individual albums.

Yes, only the "export" versions of the box sets had NTSC DVDs. This may not matter to you, depends on your player and display. Both of mine can put out/accept in native PAL.

I got tired of trying to get the 70-75 "export" SACD set and got the Rhino CD/DVD set instead. Has a much better box/packaging than the Virgin set, which is apparently quite flimsy. At least I can play the CDs in the car, the only good side of this, where the player doesn't even accept hybrid CD/SACD, never mind SACD only.

BTW, and I know it's commonly misspoken, but audio DVDs are not DVD-A. Somebody inferred this above.

Paul, I have played through the entire 1970-1975 set listening to the 96kHz/24-bit DTS DVD-V's. I recommend not bothering with only selected albums unless you just know you don't like a couple of these. I had never owned any Genesis proper albums previously, only a compilation, so these are all new to me. They did a much better job with this box set than the first two released, it is very good. The difference between SACD and this DVD-V set is absolutely not worth worrying about, not at the price differential in my opinion.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Thanks, Chris and Craig, for your Genesis-related comments. The box sets are cost-prohibitive for me but I will keep my eye on Elusive Disc as usual.

It's noteworthy that, at both that site and Amazon Marketplace, there are more copies of the Trick Of the Tail SACD/NTSC DVD standalone release than any of the other albums of that vintage. Any ideas as to what's going on there?

I purchased the Genesis 1970-1975 CD/NTSC DVD box set for $50.60 delivered. I had an 8% Off PayPal coupon for this purchase.

Genesis: 1970-1975 [Box] [CD & DVD] - Genesis (CD 2008) - eBay (item 280338837921 end time Apr-26-09 14:57:33 PDT)

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Thx again--oohhhh yeah . . . ebay. LOL. Have largely avoided it since I got jazzed about Amazon Marketplace.

Looks like you happened to get quite the deal from someone who received it as a gift, didn't want it and was willing to sell if for (about 50%?) less than other folks?

It's actually a SACD released by a Hong Kong music company called Top Music. This SACD was release about 3 months again and only been added to sa-cd.net last night. I've not had a chance to listen to it yet, but I will give an update once I've done that. The response to this SACD has been, at the minimum, positive from what I've read on stevehoffman.tv and the one review on sa-cd.net.

The track listings, while there're overlaps, are different between the 2 releases.

Btw, there's no obi strip on the Top Music SACD. That's a brown color sticker on the left of the disc and it was one the shrink wrap.

One more thing, this Top Music SACD is readily available from various Hong Kong resellers on ebay for under US$20.00. I believe it's available from Top Music's own website for a lot more.

I have Ella and Louis and Ella and Louis Again from Verve (on redbook CD--but with very good SQ nonetheless). I wonder if the Top Music disc you've got is a selection of tracks culled from the other two releases (as far as I know, though I'm not certain, the Verve titles were the only two of their kind in terms of collaboration between them). Just curious.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I have the Ella and Louis Again MoFi Ultra (wow, supposedly fetching about $250 on Amazon Marketplace as of this typing). I think you're right, Paul, about AINY being a compilation of tracks from the two original collaboration albums.

Interesting that the "Buy now from . . ." pull down menu isn't showing up as of this typing. I guess that will populate with time if, as you say Danny, this title was just added to the site recently.

At that price, I'll stick to the Verve release (yikes).
