Some of the Border's stores have the Moody Blues SACDs. Some of their stores are also liquidating media. While their regular prices are high, with their rewards program over the years I've picked up some bargains like MoFi CDs and SACDs for 11.99. The pickings are getting thinner though.

The unsuccessful scan is the most tangible proof yet that there's something awry with that purported Strauss DVD-A.

"Stores [in general]," no. But this store--in particular--after explanatory comments from you to a clerk who perhaps knows something about the high rez formats, perhaps.

Paul: Haven't been back to that store yet. Maybe soon.

Something tells me that disc'll still be there! I'll be hornswoggled if it's not!

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Anyone tried the various opera/classical concert BDs that are now available?

I'm thinking about getting the Karajan Memorial Concert BD (that has Mutter performing the Beethoven) along w/ a couple operas like Carmen and La Boheme (w/ lesser known performers since there just aren't many featuring big opera stars). Wish there was a good resource for reviews.

I currently have Angela Gheorghiu's relatively recent La Traviata on BD, but that's about it. That one is quite good -- at least as far as opera on a video disc goes -- though maybe a bit too visually revealing for Gheorghiu's own good...

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I have The Nutcracker on BD but wasn't planning on watching it until sometime in December (owing to its traditional association with Christmas). I didn't know about the Karajan concert w/Mutter--I'll have to look into that.

If I do crack open The Nutcracker before that, I'll post my impressions of the sound.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

so is BD going to really replace SACD/DVD-Audio? i hear rumours that both formats releases have basically stopped production. is that true?

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

There's p-l-e-n-t-y o' discussion of that elsewhere. The decrease/cessation of SA-CD/DVD-A production is not new news. If that meant BD was going to "replace" them, savvy folks like many of those who've been participating in this thread since its beginnings (five years ago next week--congrats, Lee!) wouldn't still be enthusiastically posting word of what SA-CDs and DVD-As (and DTS CDs and DualDiscs which, unlike SA-CD, have completely ceased production) they've bought.

I seriously doubt Blu-ray will replace any of the currently available physical music mediums. Blu-ray may be good for concerts, but for a studio album?

SACD will celebrate its 10th anniversary later this year and most likely by that time, the 6,000th title (as listed on sa-cd.net) will have been released. SACD are still in production....in fact, Sony Music Japan is showing two SACD titles are scheduled for release on May 27th. In the meantime, Chesky just released a new SACD from John Hammond.

DVD-A? Not so sure.

Order was placed....hasn't arrive yet. Music Direct's website showed that the title is in stock. Someone at audioasylum.com already received the SACD and said that it sounded great. Can't wait.

But what kind of pop music would you really care to have on SACD though?

Some of the old classics are on SACD, eg. Elton John.

It is true that Blu-ray would be a more than adequate replacement for both SACD and DVD-A and it is true that Blu-ray is doing far better in the marketplace than both of those formats did combined. I believe in a couple of years after the player base has grown substantially that we will see a unified push from Warner, UMG, Sony and at least a couple of the smaller music labels to offer premium priced high quality Blu-ray audio titles and then the market can decide. It is clear that SACD and DVD-A are basically a thing of the past as far as popular music releases although we might see a few going forward. The classical niche appears to be fairly well served by SACD but not much else.

I personally hope SACD and DVD-A disappear completely and no further confusion or lack of understanding remains and Blu-ray can be given whatever market might exist. One format and all manufacturers making players is the best situation in my opinion and we could have that with Blu-ray. Consumers are aware of Blu-ray and as HDTV continues its growth, more consumers will buy Blu-ray players to have the best quality source for their HDTV. To some extent having video and gaming enthusiasts the main market for high resolution surround music may be somewhat akin to trying to sell flower pots to dog owners but dog owners shouldn't be any less likely to want flower pots than the general population. What is clear is there is no way to resurrect SACD and DVD-A from life support or the grave respectively and get either or both up and about. Blu-ray will be in a significant percentage of homes with an HDTV within a couple of years, it is the first of the better than CD and better than DVD digital formats to amount to anything in terms of market.

Lee: I've learned a lot here, too. Not nearly enough, but a lot more than I knew before I started dropping by!

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

oddly the borders of which i purchased those discs also
had another Moody blues sacd that was similar to this one.
It was Nights In White Satin , but that one didn't have the orange

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Ouch. Double Post.

I hate when that happens.

I should check out my local Borders and see if they even have any media left. I doubt it.
