Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?
"That's one of the things that has surprised me about the DVD-As and SACDs. It seems to me like they haven't dropped in price like, for example, HD-DVDs."
I'm generalizing but I thnk this may have to do with the fact that the small but acquisitive high rez aud consumer market (exemplified by folks like us who have kept this thread going for nearly five years?) is willing to pay to get quality discs.
"Sure, I can name a number of stores in which I can walk in and buy Herb Alpert's Passion DVD-A for $3.99 (or thereabouts)...but most times I find a DVD-A I'm interested in...it's still "top dollar.""
Welllll I think it depends on what you call "top dollar." I listed my MFSL Ultradisc of Nirvana's In Utero on Amazon Marketplace recently and found someone asking $477 for their new copy (!). I understand your point, but I haven't seen that level of meshugas with DVD-A. I think that has to do with the size of the universe of collectors--which is larger for, say, gold CDs because they are, after all, still CDs--and what some obsessive people are willing to pay for.
With HD DVD, I think the terminal issue for software value was/is that the sole major hardware manufacturer supporting that format stopped making players. If Tosh was still making players, I think the software situation would be more akin to LD, even with no new titles--it could limp along with a fervent, small installed base. (It will be interesting to see what happens to used HD DVD demand if Tosh finally gets over it and makes a combo HD DVD/BD player.) Unlike HD DVD, there are still fine companies like OPPO and Denon including DVD-A and SA-CD playback in their new decks.
Perhaps the fact that the home vid industry has historically been more motivated to coalesce around one consumer media format moreso than the recorded music industry is also a factor? (Whereas there was competish to be sure but talk of co-existence between DVD-A and SACD, VHS was embraced over Beta and there was much more of a drive to determine a sole standard between BD and HD DVD. No companies gave away SA-CD and DVD-A software and hardware the way the movie studios and their hardware manuf partners seduced "opinion repeaters" in the online communities with free BD and HD DVD goodies.)
