Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I'm real pleased with What's Going On. I've listened to it multiple times since recieving it friday. Nneither layer sounds even the least bit pumped up. The CD layer is hard to tell apart from the SA layer. I amplified this album much more than the usual album, more than the usual Mofi album. I noticed something I'd never noticed before, or forgotten about. At the end of the title track, just as it's almost faded out, there's a little studio noise of some sort. It's just a little thang.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Just got an email from MFSL saying that Foghat SACD and Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On are shipping in January...and Marshall Crenshaw shipping in Feb. Linda Ronstadt Hasten Down The Wind and Doobie's Toulouse Street shipping in March.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I got yet another e-mail from CD universe today that would seem to indicate Foghat is "discontinued". Yet I saw it on other's sites last week but with no ship date. Maybe CD Universe isn't gonna carry it?

I think I'll try ordering it elsewhere if prices is'a equal.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

is that single layer SACD only or is it hybrid?

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I don't think Thriller was a hybrid in any region...? I cannot recall it being so.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I just received Porcupine Tree DVD-A, "Fear of a Blank Planet". It was import from the UK from The Burning Shed. I have all of the previous Porcupine Tree DVD-A's.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Well, I picked up the Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road DVD-A finally today (on a great sale, BTW!) and, as always, youse guys is right on the money. It sounds fantastic!

Turns out my wife is thrilled. This was one of her "big albums" while in high school. So she is singing along and having a great old time rediscovering the album.

Also, picked this up...as a blind buy. Have yet to give it a spin:

Check out the ebullient customer comments at both Amazon and SA-CD.net on this release. Just get it, man. Run, don't walk. You'll thank me later.

My previous Telarc SACD was "Round-Up", which was purchased in 2006 and came in a regular jewel case.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I'd hazard a guess that that packaging change is related to the (IMO unfortunate) decision by Bob Woods and Jack Renner to sell Telarc to the Concord Music Group in 2005.

Even worse, I've now seen three examples of ordinary redbook discs in super jewel boxes (that's just cruel).

My box set of Genesis 70-75 has arrived and I've been sampling a few select favourites. Supper's Ready in MCH is, in a word, AWESOME!!!

The Telarc group is trying something new. I think Concord is a great record company, I have a bunch of their SACD's but it doesn't appear sales have been good. Concord isn't alone having that problem.

Stereophile: Once Telarc, Now Five/Four

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Thanks for that Stereophile link . . . but arrrrggggg! It presents some frustrating, depressing information and raises more questions than it answers.

It sounds like "the Telarc group" doesn't exist any longer as we've known it.

Quote:
The suspicion of those who then [after the acquisition by CMG] saw the handwriting on the wall were confirmed this past December, when a company-wide restructuring by CMG included the layoffs of 27 Telarc employees. Among those now on their own are the entire Telarc Production Department . . .

Quote:
Given that classical recordings are usually planned two or three years in advance in order to nail down orchestra schedules, there is cause for concern. Telarc also plans to put their catalog online, although where, and at what resolution, are currently up in the air. According to [former Telarc chief engineer Michael] Bishop, while releases on Blu-ray have been discussed, at this point they seem unlikely.

Regardless of the future, the Telarc team of the past 20 years is no longer intact. Along with almost everyone else, producers Bob Woods and Elaine Martone are on their own as of March 31.

I was/am a huge fan of the label; since I first got a CD player in 1986. Have more Telarc CDs than any other classical label. Loved how Jack Renner and Bob Woods--two former musicians--started a company via, amongst other things, making the first digital recording of a world class symphony orchestra anywhere and grew that company into the largest American-owned classical label. Renner even took a moment to personally respond to a letter I sent the company about how wrecked to tears I was over the beautiful "Agnus Dei" (a choral arrangement Barber wrote in 1967 of his "Adagio For Strings") on their Evocation Of the Spirit album. These developments are very sad news to me.

It's unclear from that article whether the Telarc name will continue as a going concern for new releases. Bishop et al are working under a new banner but it sounds like most of the legacy Telarc folks have been fired from CMG.

And furthermore, this casts a pall over the future of new SACD releases from the one company I'd been counting on for those. Out of a 2009 release slate of 15 titles, "[s]o far, only two multichannel SACDs are planned."

Will Benjamin Zander now not complete his Telarc Mahler cycle (I think he just had 8 and 10 left)? Erich Kunzel is the best John Williams interpreter I've ever heard. Dare I say some of his perfs of older JW scores are not just better-recorded but even more passionate than the originals. Is the fabulous sci fi/epic/adventure series of Kunzel/Cincy Pops discs that began in 1984 with Time Warp and Star Tracks now kaput?

I guess I should start prioritizing all the Telarc stuff on my wish list higher before it goes OOP . . .

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I'm more optimistic Paul. Michael Bishop may be able to have more freedom to more things from a recording standpoint once the new label ramps up.

I think its too early to tell.
