Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I've got the Keb' Mo and the two JT concerts both in my collection (along with Squibnocket), Marc.

I never found the audio on the JT concerts to be all that spectacular. I just went and peaked at my collection and saw the Neil Young Heart of Gold doc. That has great sound and would also be terrific on Blu-ray.

Some of the recent Broadway performances like South Pacific from Carnegie Hall and Oklahoma in Australia would also be welcome.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Does anyone have any feedback--good or bad--about the DVD-A of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road?

A local store has a copy for $20.99. That's pretty steep...especially since whenever they have other DVD-As they are usually in the $7 to $9 range.

But, I decided against it until I had a chance to do a little homework. I'll still have to be convinced that it is practically an aural miracle before I'd bite at that price. Sir Elton is okay...but I'm not THAT big a fan.

Thanks!

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Mike, I think even a little clicking around for reviews/comments reveals that the general consensus on the 'classic' EJ catalog high rez titles is that they are fab-u-lous. I have them all on SACD except for HONKY CHATEAU (which I will get at some point, too) plus the GYBR DVD-A and they are all gems. With GYBR on either SACD or DVD-A you also get the terrific but truncated "Classic Albums: The Making Of" GYBR DVD. It's 50 minutes here whereas the original 90 minute production (available via Netflix) includes I think more interviews IIRC.

If money is tight, you can save $5 by getting the SACD instead which is a wee bit cheaper than the DVD-A as of this writing on Amazon Marketplace. Frankly, those of us who are keeping the high rez music flame burning by buying these discs ought to be thankful that total treats such as this release are not OOP yet and can still be purchased at this price (as opposed to, say, Beck's Guero which is OOP and twice the price).

Check out the ebullient customer comments at both Amazon and SA-CD.net on this release. Just get it, man. Run, don't walk. You'll thank me later.

GBYBR is terrific on DVDA and SACD.

There are some new copies on Marketplace for almost the same price as the b&m where you found it.

Btw . . .

I saw this and have to ask the silly question: have you seen/heard JT's Live At the Beacon Theater? Very good sq IMO. Frank Filipetti engineered; same guy who did Hourglass.

Yeah, Paul. That's one of the two concerts I was talking about (that & Pull Over). It could be that I haven't heard that one in awhile and am wrongly lumping it in with the others. Another problem I have with some of my concert discs is that, like an idiot, I forget they default to DD 2.0. I'll give it a quick revisit and check it out soon. But I wouldn't be surprised if I'm just pulling a brain fart on that one.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

The copy of Depeche Mode's Black Celebration I ordered from an e-bay seller in Australia arrived today.

That now completes my Depeche Mode SACD collection (remasters only....don't have Playing the Angel or 101)

James Taylor's "Beacon Theater" DVD has a true 24-bit PCM stereo soundtrack encoded for audiophile quality playback!

oh yeah, have had this for years i need to pop it in.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

In fact, I had pulled that out last night and my "brain fart" theory was correct. it sounded great. It did default to DD 2.0 though...so I'm not sure if my last listen was "operator error."

But the 5.1 track I listened to last night was quite nice.

My Marvin Gaye What's Going On SA-CD shipped today but the Foghat SA-CD is apparently cancelled, damn! It sure is hard to find a bloody, nonclassical Sack-Dee to buy!

Do tell re the sq on this, Rachael. Of course it's a personal decision, but I'm curious about whether it's worth owning in addition to the Deluxe Edition CD (that features all kinds of bonus track goodies the SA-CD lacks).

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

That's funny. I just picked up the DVD-A: The Marvin Gaye Collection this weekend. Sounded pretty darn good for re-mixes from two-track analog taape.

I also picked up the CD/DVD combos of Genesis' A Trick of the Tail and The Wind and the Wuthering.

I had a John Pizarelli 2-disc Live SACD/Hybrid in my hands...but don't know enough about how the CD audio is on the hybrids (better/same as standard CD?) to pull the trigger. I don't ever see myself getting a SACD player.

Good Goddess, man!

Are you resisting Blu-ray, too?! If so, I would argue you have little to no excuse (the good health of you and yours notwithstanding of course) to continue what with that SACD-capable OPPO BD player coming out hopefully by March.

They cancelled the Foghat? I was looking forward to that one.

My receipt from CD Universe said Foghat was "deleted by the manufacturer"....or somethin' close to that. I was excited about the "F' section bulging a bit and I like Foghat. I saw Lonsome Dave and Foghat a couple of times. They were raunchy and entertaining boogie. Well, I stille have a bunch of their vinyls but not that one. It was such a desirable release for me....was! What'a they do count the preorders and then decide wheather to proceed?

Guys, I'll tell ya'all my thought on Marvin in a few days. This was the album by him I was wishin' for all along over the other ones they released....an' I got just the same.

Maybe I can find a replacement Sack-Dee for Foghat by the 4th of July or so....? Maybe I'll sprinkle some Pixie dust....???

Nah. I've got a Blu-ray player...but I actually won it in a contest. Maybe there's a SACD contest somewhere I could enter...

MusicDirect (MFSL's parent) shows it as To Be Determined:

MUSICDIRECT - FOGHAT - FOOL FOR THE CITY (NUMBERED LIMITED EDITION HYBRID SACD)

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Maybe I'll try ordering Foghat from Music Direct. CD Universe sent me another e-mail this morning claiming Foghat is discontinued. It's worth a try.
