Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I got the new Jordi Savall Handel Water Music. Another winner on SACD from Alia Vox.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Got the MoFi version of "Meet The Beatles". Haven't heard this album off anything but FM for years. Also, Greg Kihn's Anthology on DVD-A. Average at best (it's a Silverline) but it brings back memories. Last but not least, finally won MoFi's "Aja" Gold cd off ebay after the 5th try. Anxiously awaiting this one.

Anyone: how's the m.c. mix on the Tapestry SACD?
I found it to be somewhat of a mixed bag. The first three or four songs included some interesting choices. As an example, on "It's Too Late" the drums seem to come from the front and rear right while the lead guitar from the rear left and sax (?) from the front left. Felt somewhat dis-orientated. On "So Far Away" the piano was from the rear left and front right. The rest of the album was more main-stream and "You've Got A Friend" was very enjoyable. Carol King's voice was always well placed in the front thru out the album. But over-all, I'd say I prefer the stereo mix over the m/c. But I'm hardly an expert on the subject.

A reviewer at SA-CD.net comments on this issue.

Given your appreciation of the album, you might be a candidate for keeping your SACD *and* getting the LE CD with all the bonus tracks?

Thanks. I just read the comments and opinions. I wasn't aware of the LE CD, I will check it out. I love the album and hadn't listened in about 3 decades before getting the SACD.

Thanks for your mix comments, Gene.

Let us know how the LE is, Chris. Seems like it should be a great addition to the collection for a fan of the album.

Paul,

How do you like this one from Miss Fischer? I saw somewhat mixed reviews on Amazon for it. Thanks.

I collected many of the Euro rock Sack-Dee's that trickled out, Groove Armada, GoldFrapp, America, RPWL, Golden Earing, Roxy Music, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Kraftwerk, Art Of Music, and the others I'm not recallin'. I've collected some Japanese Jazz stuff on Eighty Eights' label and a few other labels. I have an Italian rock group Concola SA-CD. I have French titles by Johnny Hallyday, Zazie, and Jenifer on SA-CD. I have a Hong Kong SA-CD of Los Indios Tablaharas.

I've bought a few Euro SACD's (GoldFrapp, Moloko, Propaganda among them) and would buy the Zazie SACDs if they weren't so damn expensive. Am trying to find the Matt Bianco SACD and having no luck.

Succumbed to temptation and accepted a dance with the dead by picking up the Aion SACD.

It's weird.....in a good way. I like it. So I guess this means I'm destined to buy the other eight.....

I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet (I bought it last night just before attending a 10:30 screening of The Dark Knight in IMAX, so I got home late and today was quite hectic). I'll report back when I've given it a whirl. I'm not all that familiar with these particular pieces, so my review will not be expert by any means, though. I do have a Mozart disc with her and Yakov Kreizberg et al. that I enjoy, which is why I picked this one up when I saw it (SACDs are so rare on store shelves these days, I often take what I can get if it's at least moderately interesting to me).

Upon closer inspection, I'm not sure what it is. Picked it up off ebay for the Buy It Now price of $24.88 so I was a bit sceptical.

It's a cd, not an SACD; It does have the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs logo on the insert (which looks cheaply printed).
Apparently it's some sort of rare Japanese import (if you believe what you read) from the Millennium Remaster Collection (?) on the Silverapple label from The Parlophon Co. Ltd. (no e at the end) number T-2047. On the disc is "Not for sale. For promotional use only" So, is this thing legit or was I scammed out of a $25?

It does sound pretty good though, with all songs in mono and stereo. Any info on this thing would be appreciated. There are other simular titles on ebay from the Beatles and other artists.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

There has been some goofy counterfeits on ebay out of Hong Kong and China-lax copyright laws there. I'm afraid that may be what it is.

Lee, as far as I know, there're not counterfeit SACDs out of HK. China....I don't know. However, almost all such "counterfeit" discs that carried the "SACD" label on the outside are done to rip off those who are ignorant of what SACD means. Given that the only SACD manufacturing plant in Asia right now is Sony of Japan, I seriously doubt they will be pressing any counterfeit SACDs.

I mentioned the below 5 SACDs on July 21st. Note the narrow hinges on these early SACDs....

The disc in question is a cd, not an SACD. And MoFi makes no mention of such a disc (or any of the others I see on ebay) on their web site. Whether it's a legit import or not, I should have checked it out first. A serious, and embarrasing , lapse in judgement on my part.

Sorry if this is a question that has been asked earlier in the thread...but is there a list of all DVD-As which have been released? Has anyone created/maintained such a list?

Yeah it's been asked before, Mike. Someone posted this in response:

How are those Bowie SACD's ?
(The ones on Virgin, Ziggy, Scary Monsters & Let's Dance)

I've had the opportunity to buy them many times but have never pulled the trigger from fear of substandard sound.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

My apologies for including Hong Kong as a possible place of counterfeits. I did some research and it turns out HK is better about these things.

I got the new Willie Porter SACD and it is terrific.

I did the same with Ziggy for a couple of years, always just about purchasing it and never did. It has disappeared from the local stores I used to see if frequently and I saw a customer return available on Amazon Warehouse so I purchased it thinking it won't be easy to find for much longer. It is only alright, not great, in my opinion. Mix and fidelity are about average for an old album. I don't know anything about the other Bowie high resolution releases and will probably stop with just this one.

With the non SACD versions starting to populate the store shelves I decide to fill in the holes in my Moody Blues Hi-Rez collection before they disappear.
I've learned the hard way too many times.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I got my first audio only Blu-ray release, Tchaikovsky - Piano Concertos Nos. 1&3, and I guess it is correct to call it a reissue of this Naxos SACD:

Amazon.com: Tchaikovsky: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3 [Hybrid SACD]: Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, Dmitry Yablonsky, Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Konstantin Scherbakov: Music

Amazon.com: Tchaikovsky - Piano Concertos Nos. 1&3 Blu-ray

The Blu-ray version is 7.1 DTS-HD MA and Alexander Jero's little record company Surround Records has apparently gotten the rights to some of the Naxos SACD classical releases. Here is another:

Amazon.com: Grieg - Piano Concerto / Symphonic Dances / In Autumn - Acoustic Reality Experience [Blu-ray]: n/a: Movies & TV

I tried it on 2 players and both played it without need of turning on the display. My Samsung BD-P1400 plays it by bitstream to a Yamaha RX-V663 but calls it a DVD. My PS3 calls it an AVCHD with 96kHz and plays it by decoding and outputting PCM to the same receiver.

I don't know what kind of media this release is on really as my players normally tell me I am playing a Blu-ray disc when playing a Blu-ray disc. Whatever the case may be, I am hopeful Surround Records can make their business work, high resolution surround audio on Blu-ray will be a small but necessary market segment if Blu-ray is going to realize its potential. Hopefully other labels will join in. I am not knowledgeable at all about classical music although I own quite a number of SACD's and a few DVD-A's. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 is so familiar even to me but I don't think I have ever heard No. 3 before. As far as the recording, it is good, the performances appear to me to be first rate. As far as the mix, it is mostly ambience as one would expect with a 7.1 classical release.

I agree.
Only have two and I will definitely buy the rest.

Tried to resist but, as I expected, it was futile
