Moody Blues SACD, Threshold of a Dream

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

My 76-82 Genesis Box set (SACD) has arrived and I've been sampling some things across a few albums. Still early to form a definitive opinion but so far I'm happier with the MCH mixing choices than I am with the sound quality. Not as bad as some have made it out to be in various fora, but it is not as good as my "top of the line" releases (the Elton John re-issues, for example) in sonic quality.

Eric Clapton Slowhand, SACD. I'd forgotten how good this album is...

Been thinking about this one, and 461 Ocean Boulevard.

But I have both on MoFi gold so I keep putting it off.
Maybe it's time to bite.

I feel you, Blair. FWIW, after years of retentiveness, I had some very good luck selling several of my treasured Ultradiscs this past spring via Amazon Marketplace after finally deciding to get the DVD-A or SA-CD of the title. Interestingly, only Scarecrow didn't sell promptly.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I know I've asked this question before, but I seriously don't remember the answer. But when it comes to sound quality and fidelity, is the absolute best source the master tapes? Would they beat any vinyl, CD, SACD, etc hands down? Just curious.

Assuming that the master tape is the source for all of the others, it would have to be, since all others would be some form of copy. I assume that most, but not all, recording equipment used in studios is capable of higher resolution than most consumer gear. Of course, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not a recording engineer.

Unfortunately, I can't speak to the sound quality of either right now, because my SACD player is packed away for then next month. I ripped both to my ipod and have been listening in MP3 (or whatever Apple uses) glory .

Oh, and I should note that I picked up both Clapton SACDs on Ebay for $12 and $13 respectively, including shipping. Both were new and still in the wrapper. There are some good deals there if you are patient.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

If I buy the Clapton's on SACD it will be from yourmusic who have them for $6.99 each, free shipping.

Come to think of it, I suppose it's a no brainer at that price.

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Oops, looks like Sony did it again. Not unlike with She's So Unusual and the Dances With Wolves score, they've released a remastered/expanded CD of a title that arguably makes the existing SACD comparatively less attractive. This time it's a Legacy Edition of Tapestry.

But unlike Dances and Cyndi, those weren't multichannel SACDs. Anyone: how's the m.c. mix on the Tapestry SACD?

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

Can anyone who perhaps has both comment on this Collector's Edition CD + DVD-V of Peachtree Road versus the SA-CD? I'm thinking they're mutually exclusive beasts, since it looks like the CE includes three Billy Elliot songs, plus a DVD-V of perfs of nine songs from that show, whereas the SA-CD is a multichannel mix of just the original 12-track album.

I have the single layer "Tapestry" SACD and it is great. The album has always been one of my favorite 70's releases and the SACD version is far and away the best version I have heard. It was given quad treatments in the 70's but this is an upgrade. Great fidelity, great dynamics and great songs in my opinion. I have the Ode/Epic/Legacy ES86328 and I believe it was released subsequently with an improvement of some sort but I don't recall the specifics and I didn't bother with replacing this one because I love it.

A reviewer at SA-CD.net comments on this issue.

Given your appreciation of the album, you might be a candidate for keeping your SACD *and* getting the LE CD with all the bonus tracks?

Not familiar with Kleiber but ironically I recently bought a CD on DG of these same two works performed by the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, the 27-year old who takes over as principal conductor of the L.A. Philharmonic next season. Very good IMO.

Lee,

You have been pioneering this thread for over four years, now!

I think I owe you a demonstration my Kipnis Studio Standard Screening & Liesting Room, with your choice of materials.

And I owe you a CD-R studio master of "Mombo Mongo" off the digital editor!

I'm not too sure, but I just assumed that was a rhetorical question. That DG recording is considered legendary (at least by non-audiophiles anyway), especially for the last movement of the Beethoven Fifth w/ those glorious french horns -- a "must hear" for any fans of that otherwise overplayed/heard piece. However, if you like your Beethoven Fifth performed more briskly, then this one is probably not for you.

I'm an experienced Pioneer. In my youth I was a Doyle High School Pioneer. I've been to the Cumberland Gap too. I even have a 'coon skin hat to style about in....

No new Sack-Dee's or DVD-A stuff for me. Chesky has a few releases I should paw through but have not. The dead have never danced for me. I have nothin' on my horizon but I got 3 nice Ventures, mono LP's at the used store yesterday. That'll hold me over for awhile.

The pickin's are gettin' mighty slim, aren't they?

You sound like me....not sure if it's worth dipping into the DCD arena.

What about the jazz SACDs coming from Analog Productions ?

Re: What Hirez Discs Have You Purchased Recently?

I can't shop much for older Sack-Dees. I got 'em all years ago, nearly literally. I might get a few of the Analogue Productions jazz releases. I've not been in jazzy moods much the last few years...I did like their Rickie Lee Jones release.....which might have been my last purchased Sack-Dee....I think so...it was priced too high. It's one of my very favourite albums or I wouldn't of ante'd up. That'll limit my purchases from them in the future. For $30 I'll be mighty picky!

I collected many of the Euro rock Sack-Dee's that trickled out, Groove Armada, GoldFrapp, America, RPWL, Golden Earing, Roxy Music, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Kraftwerk, Art Of Music, and the others I'm not recallin'. I've collected some Japanese Jazz stuff on Eighty Eights' label and a few other labels. I have an Italian rock group Concola SA-CD. I have French titles by Johnny Hallyday, Zazie, and Jenifer on SA-CD. I have a Hong Kong SA-CD of Los Indios Tablaharas.

.....'an I never canceled my preorder for King Crimson's In The Court Of The Crimson King. Who knows....?....truth is stranger than Fripp. There's not alot of SA-CD's left for me to collect. "feed me, feed me"

Unsure about DCD....can someone recommend one title that I'd want to try?

I look at my SACD collection and I still have major holes to fill....Dylan (I have none), Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel, Police, the Pixies, the Who, Sting, Michael Tilson Thomas/SF Symphony, Miles Davis, classical, jazz, etc. Heck, I don't even have the 2nd boxset of the Genesis SACDs

And the next Fourplay album, "Energy", will be SACD

I will graciously accept your Mombo CD-R and provide you the harpsichord recording we just got accepted into WABE's Fall classical playlist.

I will let members here know the data and if streaming options are available.

Great to see Jeremy on the board. Folks, Jeremy is probably the smartest guy I know in audio and video. I would value his opinions highly.
