Pio DV-563A firmware fix - Page 2

I just contacted an authorized Pioneer service center here in Minnesota. They said that they are just waiting for the firmware upgrade disc from Pio, which hopefully would be here in a couple of weeks.

Since I don't have any of the discs in question, I guess waiting a couple of weeks is no big deal for me.

Yup, I think I'll wait too... not urgent... don't buy that many hi-res discs.

I have to think that they've sold a lot of 563a's that need this repair, and that it would be in everybody's best interest to get as many CD-Rs as widely distributed as possible, if only to all authorized repair centers and / or retailers with repair centers... should not be difficult to get this fix installed.

My local 'authorized' Pioneer repair shop is crappy, but at least it's nearby... I'd like to forgo the trouble of shipping... guess I don't mind going to the local shop and explaining 3 times what needs to be done.

Maybe they'll just let me do the fix there!

So, if you push a bit Pioneer will pick up the tab for shipping.
Right on. By all means, trackable/traceable w/ insurance.

Any one else having problems playing the Tommy DVD-A? It apparently is one of the affected titles. -p

Anyone in Canada know where we can send our 563a in for repair?

Any Canadian with a DVD-audio player will want to flip the top half of their heads up and down to Neil Young-Greendale eventually.

Yes it is one of the affected titles, it wont play without the firmware upgrade.

Here is the canadian address for dv-563a upgrade:

Service Dept
Pioneer Electronics of Canada, Inc
300 Allstate Parkway
Markham, ON
L3R 0P2

Make a note to the attention of Service Dept that you require a firmware upgrade.
Takes them two weeks to do the fix and time to ship it to your address. I shipped it from NL Canada next day and got it back three weeks to the day.
Every now works on the unit. I had the "Brian Wilson Live at the Roxy" and it now plays fine. The disk sucks but it plays fine now.
Any one just buying a new unit and returning the 'old' one now that the 563A is apparently clearance priced at Best Buy since the new Pio 578A is now hitting shelves?

Of course, no guarantee that the unit will still not need upgrade.

It will be interesting to see if the 578A has firmware issues, either similar or different.

For those looking for a fast 563A firmware update, check the Pioneer data base for local repair shops.
My longtime shop here in the Minneapolis area "COMPONENT ASSEMBLERS" received the update disc "May 04" and upgraded my unit while I stood there and watched.
Its completely automated 11 or 12 step process without the need of user intervention.
Took more time having him fill out the workorder to get paid by Pioneer than the two minute update.

I just bought a disc that has a DVD-A playback problem in the 563a (Crystal Method's Legion of Boom). I called my local service center and they said since the player is out of warranty I'll be paying 37.50. Were others' players still under warranty or should Pioneer be compensating the service center?
Cameron: It seems to vary by situation/dealer but, IF you are being charged for something by anyone, IIRC it seems to most often be by Pio to return your unit to you if you choose to get the firmware upgrade by shipping the unit to them.

I'm not so sure you should have to be paying anything if, for instance, you walk your player in to an authorized service center to have a Pio-documented issue (namely the firmware upgrade) taken care of.

For instance, Jerry K., it sounds like you did not have to pay for anything?

Man, that blows. $37.50 is not much in terms of what we all spend on this hobby, but it is about 20% of what a lot of folks paid for these players. And on principle, you would think they would toss you a bone.

And if you didn't know about places like the HTF, you may not stumble across a problem title until well past the warranty.

I would probably become a big PITA with Pioneer over this one.

Well, I'll probably go ahead an email or call Pioneer and get some clarification on the issue. It's not a big issue as I just added a couple things to improve performance (an ICBM and BFD) and would like some time to enjoy it. I was hoping to enjoy the Crystal Method on DVD-A, but it was not meant to be. Fortunately the DTS track works.

Weird thing about the lack of DVD-A playback is not only is there no audio output, the tracks jump ahead after 12 seconds, like it's sampling each track.

BTW, the Crystal Method is a Universal Music artist.

I went through seven players that had distortions in the center and sub while listening to 2ch 192khz DVD-A discs through the 5.1 analog outputs with the speakers small and the sub on.

I may be missing something...how did you have distortion in the center channel when you were only playing 2-ch material? I'm not being rude, just genuinely curious.

Why can't Pioneer just make the disc available direct to consumers either by mail or by download? I'm not so incompetent that I couldn't flash the firmware on a DVD player.
I did not have to pay single cent.
My shop filled in a electronic service work-order with the serial number.
This is sent directly to Pioneer on the spot as a warranty
service fix. No cost to you if done local and the shop still gets paid for their time.
The CD came with instructions for the the repair center on how to proceed and invoice Pioneer.
If your shop wants to charge, maybe it is time to find a new
repair center as they are either incompetent "can't read"
or they are looking at you as a fool that will pay.
Pioneer responded to my email and I'm supposed to call them with my serial number.

Thanks for the info.

Each service center wants a minimum of 2 days with my player, and I don't want to part with it. Has anyone seen the flash as a downloadable ISO?

People on this link have been chasing it down, with no luck: http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/foru...ead.php?t=3020

I'd bet on 'incompetent'... it seems Pioneer (and others) awards 'authorized' service status to the low bidder -- in my case a little neighborhood repair shop with a large language barrier.

And they doggedly withhold a crummy little FW fix disc... probably so some precious little code doesn't get hacked, I suppose... ???

I'll probably forget the hi-res-for-$150 dream and move up to a better player before I bother with this little fix.

That Yamaha S1500 is lookin' good...

I looked up my sales receipt and it looks like I'm actually still under warranty (just barely though). Called Pioneer and just got a reiteration of what I already knew, so I guess I'll bring the thing in sometime next week.
Cameron: Perfect time for you to ask/confirm with Pio how this would be handled (differently??) had your player not been under warranty if you don't mind . . . -p
post #52 of 74
Well, I called back and in general terms if the player needs service for a bug then the warranty is three years from manufacture date. I don't think there is any debate about whether this is a bug issue.
Add Seal IV to the list of affected titles.

Here's the link to the Pioneer website showing there is a 3 year firmware warranty on these players...

U.S.A.:

Canada:

Thanks for that. I took my player in a couple days ago and should have it sometime this coming week.
so if i don't really care about the incompatibility issue with some hi-res cd's, (i'm mostly only using this one for movies) is it still worth taking in for the firmware fix?
Well, you never know what's going to come up. I didn't really care until I bought a DVD-A that wouldn't play properly. And with the three year warranty I suppose you could just wait until the need presents itself.

Paul_Psutka, with a post of great info like that, you are most definitely welcome to the thread! Thanks.

Anyone get "Neil Young - Greendale" to play in their "firmware fixed" DV-563A? The newer model DV-578A will not play this disc.... and I just tried a newer model manufactured in July 2004 with firmware 1.44. Time to switch brands, as I've been through 4 DV-578's now (2 of them had other problems besides not being able to play "Greendale").
I got my player back and it plays the problem disc fine now.
