Has the original '73-74 "Super Friends" ever been released on DVD? - Page 2

hi Joseph,

I agree the best series were the 60s (aquaman/superman/batma) and the 1973 series. The wonder twins were ok, because they taught kids lessons and some of them are still valid today.

I was never big fan of the challenge of the superfriends and/or legion of doom.I thought it was overkill.

Let me get this straight ... a guy who can talk to fish is one of the world's four greatest heroes?

I admit Aquaman's inclusion was always a bit of a head-scratcher for me too. Didn't keep me from loving the show. Although something like 2/3 of the Earth's surface is water, I suspect it was really an excuse to have a change of scenery with the undersea stuff, and it certainly provided that.

Of course, character ownership always keeps these Super teams from getting the best lineup possible. Not that I'm hoping for consolidation, mind you.

i think it was all about timing. Aquaman/Superman/Batman had series in late 1960s cartoons, so they just included them along with wonder woman. I think Marvin/Wendy/Wonder Dog were added to appeal to the kids. The show was very good for its time and it was during a time when saturday morning cartoons meant so much to kids.

Wendy & Marvin helped keep the violence down

Wendy and Marvin added something to unique to series, especially Wendy. I like her similar to character in Speed Buggy.

I think they were added so that the kids in the audience could identify with them, like so many other junior sidekicks of TV/comic/serial heroes of the past.  Besides, they provided the comic relief!

i have volume 1 and 2 for the 1973 series. I like this series and remember it from my youth. It has been years since i seen this show on dvd. I grew up with the 1970s cartoons and i am glad to have this set for my collection.

The first season is my favorite too.

I like the other seasons too but not the Wonder Twins, I always thought they were really annoying and a bit creepy. And Gleek the space monkey had too much screen time.

Well, there are still 3 seasons to come. It's amazing to think that with how long it's taken for this series to be released on DVD,

a whole generation of kids are now likely too old to watch them if they started with the "challenge" series way back in the

beginning with the first dvd releases!

YTV in Canada used to show some of the 1970s cartoons, but, it has been years that has happen. Boomerang and Retro Tunes had the show for awhile and then they change and added more recent cartoons. There is always an issue with generation not being interested in the old stuff. My neices growing up did not care much for the old cartoons and prefer stuff that was on tv.

Yes, I had taped some of those shows.  That was the first time since I was a kid that I saw some of the episodes, mostly the later shorts.

Those weren't really what I had remembered, which was up to the Challenge point.   Those shorts really don't hold up well at all.

I tried watching Batman: Brave And The Bold and it just made want to watch the real SuperFriends!!

^ I find it fun, dopey and brainless at times.  A perfect appetizer to Clone Wars on Friday nights...or whenever I get around to watching it.  Brave and the Bold is jokey, action oriented and very happy to play with all the characters in the DC Universe it can.  Not Shakespeare, but enjoyable enough.

Any show where the bad guys start singing I can't change the channel fast enough. Not my idea of fun.

Each to their own.
