Worst DVD covers! - Page 14

Re: Worst DVD covers!

If it was a Cousin Oliver head, no one would buy it... and everyone would blame poor Cousin Oliver.

Re: Worst DVD covers!

Three High Profile releases, two from the otherwise terrific company Warner Bros, are more than worthy of this thread:

Blood Diamond - despite Djimon's oscar nomination for this role, they've photoshopped him into an unrecognizable smooth-skinned Derek Luke impersonation: http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releas...d-diamond.html Note that in the 2 disc cover art, he has not been transformed into Derek Luke.

The Fountain - Utterly hilarious of the new Tristan & Isolde direct-to-video sequel-er, Darren Aranofsky's most profound work: http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releas...-fountain.html

Little Children - This one is just stupid. Note the tentative cover art, posted below. That's from the beautiful theatrical poster. Then look at the revised cover, and try not to laugh. There are people at New Line who think the new cover is actually a better idea. http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releas...-children.html

Re: Worst DVD covers!

The worst DVD covers have to be the generic, cutified, barf-inducing, kitsch reinterpretations of classic characters on every single Disney animation issue. I know they're giving a chance to new, young artists but shouldn't they check that the final product has some passing resemblance to the characters as they appear in the actual animation?

A recent case in point: Peter Pan Platinum Edition.

Which wasn't much of an improvement on the Special Edition:

Or the Limited Issue:

If they were Hong Kong bootlegs or Japanese Editions, they wouldn't look much different.

Re: Worst DVD covers!

This dinosaur reminds me of a children's bath toy. Not to mention his arm seems to be cut off.

Then there's this hmmmm....

Completely different movie from the same studio.

Re: Worst DVD covers!

I've been laughing through this thread. My vote so far would go to Real Genius. Modern Problems is pretty close, but it's awful hard to beat that hideous DVD cover for Real Genius! Where do they get the idiots that make these covers?? Are these supposed "artists" retarded? Val Kilmer looks like some kind of disfigured wax dummy on that DVD cover. And some guy who gets paid to do this kind of stuff worked on this and made it that way? How could anyone have such incredibly bad taste to think that looks good, or be so utterly incompetent that he can't do better than that?

It's truly pathetic.

Honorable mention has to go to that R2 Journey to the Center of the Earth DVD cover. You know, the one that looks like an 8-year old drew it with crayons. lol!

The new Full Monty cover...

Quality paste work on those heads!

Re: Worst DVD covers!

The sad thing about that cover is that it comes from a banner ad for when The Full Monty was released for the first time on DVD. It looked bad then and it still looks bad now. To boot, no new anamorphic transfer. Talk about adding insult to injury.

Re: Worst DVD covers!

Really fun thread. I'll have to check my collection because I know I have a ton of lousy covers.

Oh, speaking of plastic dinos, the VHS of the old TV movie The Last Dinosaur has some of the worst box art I've ever seen. Looks nothing like what's in the movie. I couldn't find any images of it.

Also, Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol 10 features a plastic T-rex prominently, but none of the flicks have a T-rex. ...

Re: Worst DVD covers!

The addition of the screencap threw me off. "Maybe he likes that shot a lot!"

Re: Worst DVD covers!

I'm hoping it's a joke as well. Isn't the DVD art the original poster? Certainly the giant carved letters BEN-HUR are an iconic image, and really expresses the huge epic size of the film. The picture of Heston in the chariot race is just a random screenshot.

It is a joke. This Ben-Hur poster is the iconic original art, as you said. The really horrible cover is the four-disc edition where they added green grass under the horses' hooves...

Now that's ugly...

Re: Worst DVD covers!

I kind of like it.

That is a relief.

Visually, the 4-disc does look really quite nice, a nice reworking of the iconic image, just to bring a bit more colour and texture to the image. But, as you say, it is quite absurd to have the horses racing on a green grass. If they had left it sandy, I think I might prefer it to the original.

Re: Worst DVD covers!

I'm glad that was a joke. The screaming Heston cover makes it look like his scream would be dubbed into english from italian.

I kind of like that slightly colorized verson of the cover with the green grass too.

The green grass (or mulch) is an abomination in my eyes. It certainly jars with the all-orange image that implanted itself in my brain and that of millions of my contemporaries when the film first came out and blew us all away with its spectacle and grandeur.

Re: Worst DVD covers!

DVD Covers are getting worst and worse on a daily basis, and from what I've seen the Hi Def formats are even worse, go look at the June Slate from Universal of HD-DVD's there's a Daylight Cover With Sly Stallone on it that is horrendous.

Well said!

Now that I look at it better it reminds me of what could've been "Monty Python's Ben Hurr". (extra "r" gets knocked away in a brilliant Gilliam animation)

I still kind of like it. But it certainly didn't need to be changed for anything other than to please new fans perhaps.

Re: Worst DVD covers!

I agree on The Fountain, what a terrible DVD cover.

The movie poster is SO much nicer.

Re: Worst DVD covers!

I don't know why you don't like the old Superman: The Movie cover, Percebe. It's pretty much a zoomed version of the original poster art with a stylized blue border. See the original art here:

I will admit that I'd prefer the original poster art as is, but the original DVD cover isn't bad.

I always thought it was funny that by removing the villains from the foreground, they effectively made the picture one of Superman flying away from a burning Metropolis. "The Ballad of Sir Robin" from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" comes to mind.

Wow, I don't agree in the slightest. The top one is an outstanding cover, and far superior to that abomination on the bottom, IMHO.

EDIT: Oops! Should have read the rest of the thread before posting.
