i realize that colin.
i didnt say will himself was the reason it was changed. that was a different post.
i was saying the reason for the change was what was stated in the memo.

Sorry it looked like I aimed my irritation at you - not intended!

I guess the obvious answer is that they are using Smith as a selling point and rightfully so. Although those that like Smith's sometimes mouthy attitude won't find that character in Detective Spooner.

You think? I found him to be a pretty typical Smith character - he still had the usual attitude and one-liners...

Sighhh. GREAT movie, horrible cover art. I could do a better job with MS Paint!!

Ahhhhh!

Some of you should do more research. For every crappy video cover (I forgot about In The Line Of Fire-- eww), most of you are just picking theatrical key art that you didn't like. The "Midsummer's Night.." and "Vanilla Sky" covers are the same as the theatrical one-sheets. If you're going to hog the thread up with posters you don't happen to like, start a new thread in the Movies section, please.

Just saw some of the art for the Anchor Bay releases of Fox titles. Man, THOSE are ugly...

Not quite. I have the Vanilla Sky one-sheet, and it lacks the extra photos around Cruise's face.

Well, I dont know whether or not the DVD cover art is the same as the theatrical poster...but why would it matter? If its crappy poster art on a dvd cover, than its a bad DVD cover.

And even though that Midsummer picture looks like a poster, its the exact case for the DVD.

After browsing through this thread one more time...I think it's high time there was a moratorium placed on studios, regarding the over-abundance of "floating heads" covers/posters.

Yeah, but then it belongs more in a "Bad Movie Poster" thread. This one should deal with instances in which the DVD is the weak link...

Reviving this thread for a new contender:

Anyone else think this is from the same guy who brought us the Real Genius cover? Anyone else think it might be WORSE than the Real Genius cover?

Great movie, terrible cover art!
Yikes, that cover is awful, makes it look like some cheap made-for-video piece of crap.

But it doesn't surprise me, Anchor Bay has a history of bad cover art. A shame since everything else they do is great.
Yep, it's a great companion to the Real Genius cover alright. I'd say it's a little worse, myself.
Thanks Jordan and Jay, you beat me to the punch.

The original RACE WITH THE DEVIL one-sheet is awesome. I'm hoping it's included in the promotional materials gallery on the disc.
My copy of RACE should come in by tomorrow and I believe a quick search for the original poster art for a new cover is in store right after watching this gem!
Wow, that Modern Problems cover is awful! Ranks right up there with Real Genius indeed... and for me, this one as well:

Star Wars covers. Way, way too much lens flare.
One other thing about bad/ugly DVD cover art that I find annoying is illustrated by the one for Dangerous Mind.

Notice that the floating heads, in order, are

George Clooney, Sam Rockwell and Drew Barrymore.

However, the credits listing over the floating heads has them as Drew Barrymore, George Clooney and Sam Rockwell.

Aside from the horrible design, it could also be confusing to someone making a blind buy, who knows nothing of the movie. I have made a few blind buys this way, and it's irritating. I wonder if it could be annoying to the stars, as well, having someone else's name imposed over their likeness.

Of course, considering some of the artwork on these releases, maybe they are content with the status quo, and hope that no one recognizes them.

I think the individual covers for the Star Wars Trilogy are just awful. They all had such iconic original poster art, why not use them instead of the cut-and-paste approach that we have? (I guess because they are not the versions that match the original art...)

I just saw this one at Best Buy today. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the copy I was looking at, but then I realized every single copy looked like it had been sitting in the sun for four months.

Also, the actors (especially Paul Giamatti who looks like an ape), are airbrushed beyond reocgnition on Sideways.

Maybe they actually took a shot of Giamatti from the Planet of the Apes remake and tried to photoshop him back to human...

The sad thing is, The Last Shot had very cool poster art.

Indeed an unflattering picture of Giamatti, but the worst part of this cover is still the very top of it.

This R2 version of King Kong Lives deserves to be set on fire.

Here's a fairly bad one.

Looks like even Ellen Burstyn is shocked by that blown up picture of Jack Nicholson too, judging from the way her eyes are bulging out of her sockets.

And while we're on the subject on R2 covers to burn...

I love covers that best represent the films and make you want to see that film. Two quick examples are What About Bob?, simple and very funny, luckily they kept it for the dvd cover. And also Swimming With Sharks with a simple shot similar to 'WaB?' with Kevin Spacey screaming into the face of Frank Whaley.
Shame we get a cover that really is trying way too hard...

At least we have 'What About Bob?' Such a great cover.

IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD.

Atrocious.
Like others have stated I am so tired of them making new DVD covers... Come on now, lets use some of the original art work from the movies.....

Some other really bad ones:

Sinbad of the Seven Seas
Constantine (Widescreen Edition)

Will it ever end........

Dont think anyone mentioned Mad Max:

I love this thread!

Whoever is responsible for any (or all) of the below covers should be fired immediately and never again be allowed near a computer running Photoshop. My god, this stuff wouldn't be acceptable in a first-year junior-high graphic design class! Ugh. Pathetic.

What? You got a problem with electricity and atoms flying around? Or is it the bad hair?
