DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing - Page 21

Thank you gentlemen!

A tons been going on in my life. I've got a newborn on my hands (4.5 months old), I was told by my employer of 11 years that my position was being eliminated at the same time we put a bid in on a new house. I found a new job within the company I closed on my house and then I got fired from my job again!

Gotta love life!

So it looks like Neil has the list updated to date. As I said to him in my email, the releases are so infrequent that I could probably check the list quarterly and keep it up...but I won't.

Cheers!

Looks like War of the Worlds and Fantastic Four isn't EX/ES...

Sucks to be 7.1 right now!

Added Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Titanic release date updated.

I know it's early, but CORPSE BRIDE will be EX as well.

Upside of Anger was DTS discrete when I watched it the other day

I'd like to suggest that the OP include information regarding the fact that this info doesn't get printed on the DVD case.

I think it would help limit newcomer's confusion on why their DVD can be found on the list and yet not include the 6.1 logo (matrixed or discrete) on the DVD case itself.

Alexi,

Suggestion taken.

Quick question:

I've noticed I have a few titles on the list, but as I try to play them, only half have actually had 6.1 channel sound. For instance, Incredibles, LOTR: EE's, and Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets both have 6.1.

On the other hand, I have Gladiator, Monsters Inc., Winged Migration, for example, all did not display 6.1 sound. Is it perhaps because I bought these awhile ago?

If I rebought those movies, would they have 6.1 sound now? Thanks.

Without knowing what kind of receiver you have Alexi here is a explanation:

Speaking for just Galdiator and Monsters Inc. With Galdiator you need a 6.1 capable receiver to decode the 6.1 Dts Es discrete track. The receiver if set to auto detect should automaticlly go to DTS ES as the disc is propperly flagged for DTS ES 6.1. With Monsters you need to manually set the receiver to DD EX. If your receiver is not 6.1 you won't be able to decode any DTS ES Discrete/Matrix or Dolby Digital EX as these require a 6.1 receiver.

I bought my Gladiator when it 1st came out in November 2000. Rebuying em won't change anything.

Hope this helps.

Marantz SR4500. Using Coaxial Digital connection. Set to Auto.

When I play Incredibles for instance, I get 6.1. Same with LOTR: EE's, and other titles I mentioned. Strange huh that Gladiator and Master Commander of the Sea doesn't though.

Dumb question coming here, but what version of Gladiator do you have? The original 2 disc version which had a DTS ES Discrete track, the single disc version w/just a DD track on it or the recently released 3 disc set?

Master & Commander you have to manually set it to EX or ES. It is not auto flagged.

"the single disc version w/just a DD track"

that one. I didn't realize there was a DTS version. I tried looking and found the single disc version and the 3-disc collector's edition. So my bad. Thanks for helping though.

What about Winged Migration?

I don't understand it all completely, but from what I gather, it seems as though the problems you're having with certain movies are just a case of those movies not being properly flagged for EX. You should be able to set your receiver to EX manually, which would solve the problem.

Personally, I always set my receiver manually to EX if I'm going to be watching an EX movie, because so many movies are not flagged that it just seems easier than trying to figure out which ones are.

DUMA comes with DTS
Thanks Mike!

That did it. I always watched the speaker indicators to see if the SB indicator was on along with L,C,R,SL,SR,LFE.

Now that I'm manually setting it to EX/ES, because it's not flagged or not discrete I assume, I don't get an SB indicator, but there is another light that says MTX 6.1 (matrix 6.1), and the DTS light is on.

It all makes sense now. WOOH! What fun!

Amazon.com write War Of The Worlds 2 Disc is DTS ES...but i dunno Disc or Mtx mode.
Star Wars 3 is DD EX.

update?
I might have had something set up wrong but Star Wars 3 wasn't auto detected by my reciever as DD:EX. I had to set it manually.
Doug, you didn't have anything set up wrong. My Denon detected the EX flag for the new THX trailer, but not for the feature. Me thinks somebody messed up (on a Star Wars disc, too.... Imagine that....)
Thanks Derek, I remember seeing the EX flag at one time (must have been the THX trailer), then, half way through the movie, I look at my Yamaha and it said "Normal".

I was scratching my head on that one.

I just moved to a new house and just set up my home theater, so I was wondering if I screwed something up.

It may be that Amazon has made a typo. Typically if a disc is encoded in DTS-ES, then it's also encoded in DD-EX which they don't list.

Also War of the Worlds wasn't EX/ES in theaters, so I doubt it'll be on DVD.

I know it's very early for these, but according to dolby.com, both KING KONG and HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE will be EX.
Without wading through this entire thread, could someone please tell me what the criterion is for determining if a DVD is EX/ES when it doesn't auto flag, and it's not listed on the jacket?

SW EP3 Sith (to use a recent example) is a different animal. It says DD-EX on the jacket, it says DD-EX in the set-up menu, but it just doesn't auto-flag. Fine - I can live with that and just force the pre/pro into EX. But at least I know it's a DD-EX DVD.

On the flip side of the coin, Atlantis flags DD-EX, but it's not listed on the jacket or in the set-up menu.

So how does someone know (for example) that M&C is actually an EX or ES soundtrack on the DVD? I see no indication of this on the jacket or in the set-up menu - just regular 5.1 DD/DTS options.

I can "force matrix" any 5.1 DVD (and have done so, often with mixed results). But that doesn't mean it was intended to be played back that way.

Thanks in advance........
there is no criteria, for this.
thats the reason for this topic.
a comprehensive list of all dvds with this feature, so the dvds not auto'd and not jacket listed will be known to us.

I understand the goal of the thread (and I commend the effort).

I just want to know how the OP or any thread contributors know a given DVD is indeed EX or ES, when there is no indication of this on the jacket or in the set-up menu and it doesn't flag?

There must be some other source of information you guys are drawing upon to make this determination, right?
