DD-EX & DTS-ES encoded movies listing - Page 19

Anyone interested in a worldwide DTS list can find all titles here: DVDTherapy

That list is FAR from complete. A better version can be found on DVDtalk.

Jeffery, I'm curious. If it only does matrix DTS 6.1, how does it read the rear surround? If it is a descrete 6.1 mix, does it create a false rear from the left/right surrounds and completely disregard the rear channel, or does it mix the rear channel into the left/right and then matrix it back to the rear, if so, why not just make it compatibale with true 6.1? This makes no sense. I don't understand what happens to a discrete surround rear if it only does matrix. What was the company thinking when they decided to not do discrete?

Shad,

In order to be fully backwards compatible with regular DTS, all DTE-ES discrete titles have the rear channel info also present in the rear left and right. This makes DTS-ES Discrete not only backwards compatible with DTS 5.1, but DTS-ES matrix as well.

As for why some manufacturers have DTS Matrix only? Well, back when DTS-ES discrete first came out, not everyone bought the newer, more expensive decoding chips, but had the circuitry in place to do DTS-ES Matrix since they were also doing Dolby EX (it's the same steering logic). The Pioneer VSX-37TX and VSX-39TX were examples of this.

Sorry about the long post, but I'm curious....
so, if the rear channel is also present in the rear left and right, and the same info is presented in the descrete rear, what happens to the rear info recorded in the left and right when playing a 6.1 disc through a 6.1 system?? Does the sound stay in the left and right, or does it go to the rear ALONG WITH the discrete rear? If that's how they do it, and the same rear info is present in the left and right AND the discrete rear, why even bother with a discrete rear? I hope that makes sense. I am just confused.:b If a 6.1 track is to be backwards compatable with 5.1, the rear is encoded in the right/left, but is ALSO in the discrete rear, so where does the encoded rear go when played back with a 6.1 system, because the discrete rear is going to the rear channel already?

my next question has to do with my tax return...

A DTS-ES Discrete receiver will use the information present in the rear channel to subtract it from the left and right rears. So even though DTS-ES is technically a 6.1 discrete channel format, there is still some matrixing that must occur to make it backwards compatible.

List updated....

It's looking so dismal for EX/ES releases lately...what gives?

It would be cool if some release along the way would release a true dts Es 6.1 mix (not backwards compatible with dts matrix) along with out the matrixed info in the Side Surrounds. I know the decoder would still be active trying to remove that material but if it is not there I think it would be close to being a true discrete mix.

All being said, I'm not sure you really could tell a difference between the two 6.1 in reality.

I agree Troy...seems bleak. Hopefully we get a couple surprises like last year. BTW, how many titles were released in EX last year anyway?

Louie,

I haven't kept track of the number of releases by year, but I'm sure the total for 04' was under 10!

i know st generations is only on the dd-ex list but,
listening to it in dts and forcing the dts-es matrix channel i can clearly hear seperate sourround effects in all three channels.

noticible during the laser shootout with soran, worf and riker, just before soran beams out with geordi.
then the nxt shot is the enterprise flying right overhead and you can hear it right from the center channel.

anyone else check this or can someone else check this out?
Most DD 5.1 and dts 5.1 sound tracks do create a rear center channel image when forced into the EX/ES mode! If your waiting for EX/ES releases to engage your EX/ES then your waisting alot of great EX action on movies that do have the information to fill that channel just as a so called EX/ES mix.

I have heard nothing more impressive in that EX/ES channel from a EX/ES mix then most 5.1 mixes do create by forcing the EX/ES. I love the EX/ES channel and have it engaged nearly 100% of the time!

Just my view on the matter!

I wonder why Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow wasn't in EX in the DVD? It apparently was in the theaters!

Recent support for these audio formats seems rather abysmal.

There's always Star Wars III: Revenge Of The Sith with a rumoured street date of Nov 8th? DD-EX5.1

If SKY CAPTAIN was in EX theatrically (which nearly every source states that it was), then shouldn't the DVD be in EX by default? What are the odds of them remixing the film?

Great list, BTW.

Maybe it was not flagged as EX. It still may be an EX track. Hmmm, I own this but still have never seen it.
