I was surprised when the new Harry Potter movie didn't have a DD-EX soundtrack like the two previous ones.

It does... check the list.

I really thought that studios would start releasing more and more DVD's this way as it seemed it would be a great marketing tool (similar to Superbit).
I think it is to some degree but to be honest I'm still doubting that there are enough of an audience with 6.1 speakers wired up to justify it. The only way to find out is to make 2 discs(one with Ex and 1 w/o) and see what happens.

It may not be more expensive but what about the extra effort it takes to mix the soundtrack for 6.1? I tmight not be much but perhaps some studios just don't wish to put the effort into that.

Why would you want to do that? A 6.1 mix is 100% compatible with a 5.1 system.

I doubt there is any effort involved at all. Most major releases are probably mixed for more than 5.1 channels.
Isn't SDDS something like 8 or 9?

Well in the context of my post what I wanted to say is that by putting out an EX version and a non EX version you could tell if people are willing to pay for it or not. This was in context of the whole "EX is a marketing thing" discussion.

I guess they must have screwed up the flag. My receiver didn't autosense it.

add open water to the list of dts-es and dd-ex.
it's listed that way on the sound menu too.
i just watched and it triggers the flag on my denon.
and sound cleary comes from the rear channel.
Hmm...Go figure.

Wonder why my Pioneer vsx-811s wouldn't do it? I'll just have to force it the next time I watch.
nate did you notice that in the sound choice menu it lists the tracks as dd-ex and dts-es?
Oh man, I didn't even check the sound menu.

I guess disregard everything I posted before. I figured all that menu was for was to change the language.

Oops.

Troy, Open Water seems to be missing from the list. It has correctly flagged DD-EX and DTS-ES Discrete tracks.

Because all DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 soundtracks are also Matrix 6.1 compatible.

OK.... stupid question. I am upgrading my amp to a Denon AVR-1905, and in the specs it only specifies "Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES, Dolby Pro Logic IIx" and so forth. Will it allow for discrete decoding? How do I tell? Are there some amps that are only "MATRIX 6.1" compatable, but not DISCRETE? I'm so confused (more than usual).....:b

I'm not aware of any such processor. Certainly Denon 1905 is capable of playing DTS-ES discrete.

The Village is DD EX (both English and French tracks), so marked on the menu and properly flagged.

Sten,

I think Troy wanted to limit the titles to Region 1 only.

My Yamaha HTR-5560 handles DTS-ES Matrix only and not Discrete. I'm not sure I could tell the difference between Matrixed and Discrete. I'm very happy with it.

Good, now I'm aware My statement about Denon 1905 still stands (based on the specs published on the Denon's web site).

I doubt that one can tell the difference between matrixed and discreete in real world. I remember with Pro-Logic even if you were running a "center channel only" material, the sound would still bleed from L&R channels -- but I had to walk up to the speaker to hear it. I would imagine the same is true about Matrixed vs. Discrete -- the level of separation is different, but in all likelyhood, inaudible when watching movies.

Troy, please add The Incredibles to the list of DD-EX5.1 titles with a March 15th release.

Troy, it is also my understanding that The Notebook has a DD-EX5.1 soundtrack as well. Maybe someone can verify this
post #539 of 813
I just bought SAW and it is in DTS-ES discrete and DD EX.
The box says 6.1 DTS ES digital audio, and on my receiver
(hk avr 630) it comes up as discrete. it also says 5.1 DD surround EX and on my receiver is comes up as that (the rear centers work).

One more for the list. Great movie too.

Didn't show up as such on my receiver (Denon 5803).
