HTF Anime Discussion Part VII - Page 4

Well, I'm ordering Last Exile Box tonight, and I'll wait on until they get in Rahxephon Vol. 4.

If you guys haven't figured out by now, it takes me months to follow through on purchase decisions.

BTW Tony, two things to say to ya.

1. A friend of mine recommended I listen to "Seasons in the Abyss" and "Dead Skin Mask". Pretty kick ass songs, but it's hard to figure how to put them into my random CD mix rotation.

2. PhD pencil kicks ass.

I know this is anime blasphemy, but I love Robotech, and the new remasters have me intrigued, mainly because they're so cheap to get. What's the opine on that one?
Dome:

Robotech isn't blasphemy...in fact, for many of us old-schoolers, it was what got us into anime in the first place. I'm not sure if I'd pick it up now, but I certainly acknowledge it's importance. That and the fact that I have so many other series to get, sacrifices have to be made .

John.

Thanks for the help, however, I decided not to get a movie this weekend. I've got plenty of anime I can watch.

Dome, yes! PHD does kick ass!

Also, you haven't even heard Slayer's best stuff! First things first, listen to Raining Blood, which is one of the best songs ever recorded. Then check out the following songs: Angel of Death, Postmortem, Disciple, Piece By Piece, South of Heaven, and War Ensemble.

There is only one way to fix that problem! And the solution is...MORE SLAYER AND MORE METAL!!!!

Yeah, I think of Robotech as a separate entity than Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada. I'm probably going to be picking up the Remastered DVDs myself (they're DAMN cheap!)

Hmmm...kind of quiet again. Here's a question for everyone. Assuming a good script, and high production values, what anime would you like to see as a live-action film, or series of films? Assume you can get the best actors/director/etc., and that you have an unlimited budget. I for one, would like to see a LA version of Macross. With today's special effects, you could make it look very real.

I think they could make a really cool live-action movie series out of the Banner/Crest of the Stars series.
I wouldn't totally discount an EVA film, based on the kind of excitement that is being generated in the Movies forum about the Casshern trailer.

Considering that there seems to be a trend now (with Casshern, Cutey Honey, and Devilman comming out in live-action versions), it wouldn't surprise me if it gets done at some point.

Whether it is any good or not, that's another question...

Truth is, I'd rather see a very high quality anime version than a live action version of most of the stuff I like, any day. The reason is largely that what I've seen in anime, I have preconceptions as to how it ought to look and sound, and the live action doesn't suit them. Now, I could see live-action adapted manga without problems. That said, Kishin Heidan might not do too bad, and since it eas adapted from a series of novels in the first place the movie could be quite distinct from the anime and it wouldn't bother me.
Does anyone know of a reliable website to order anime from? I'm looking to order Last Exile vol. 1 'cause it's too expensive in the stores. Any suggestions? Thanks!

www.deepdiscountdvd.com is best if you just want a single disc.
Actually, here's my counterproposal:
What movie or programme would you like to see redone as an anime?

For instance, Star Wars [episodes 4-6]. Just think of the fun of reimagining this through Japanese conventions... The Rebels are fighting to topple the corrupt, brutal military dictatorship known as the Galactic Republic and restore the overthrown Imperial rule in the person of Princess Rei, saved from the massacre of the Imperial Family and raised as his own by a secretly loyalist Republican Planetary Governor. Young Zoratabi Ryuunosuke joins the Rebels in the hope of reedeming the honour of his family, injured when his father, one of the Emperor's retainers, betrayed his own master and went over to the Dark Side, taking service under the evil sorceror called the President. Ryuu-maru meets his old man three times, running away once at the cost of the life of his teacher, Ken'obi, the last of an order of warrior monks; the second time being wounded near to death; and the third time killing his father and the President. Han Solo becomes one of those Oriental bandits who is forever professing his loyalty to the Emperor while breaking the law, and perhaps we can have Chuu-Baka, a giant and very stupid hamster who emits electric shocks randomly ,

Ranma 1/2. As the first anime show that really caught my interest, it's a sentimental favorite. Besides, I'd love to see if anyone could actually pull it off.

The runner-up would be Martian Successor Nadesico because I just love its story and characters so much.

I don't think anyone could pull off Ranma...

I mean, guys changing into girls, pigs, pandas, etc... how do you accomplish that without being cheesy?

Geneon Anime Music New Title Solicitations (09:57 PM EST): Geneon's also got some interesting releases on tap for August in their music department:

# Memories Original Soundtrack (2 CD Set) - 89 minutes - $16.98 - 08/03/2004
# Stellvia: Sound Wave of Stellvia OST - 76 minutes - $14.98 - 08/03/2004
# Tsukihime Original Soundtrack 1 - 48 minutes - $14.98 - 08/03/2004
# Akira - 69 minutes - $14.98 - 08/03/2004

We've also been told that the Rave soundtrack, originally scheduled for June, is pending a new date, presumably to tie in more closely with the shows broadcast on Cartoon Network this summer.

Geneon Entertainment New Title Solicitations (09:47 PM EST): July's got a few things happening from Geneon:

# Captain Herlock, Space Pirate Vol. #4 (also w/box) - 155 minutes - $29.98/39.98 - 08/03/2004
# Demon Lord Dante Vol. #2 - 100 minutes - $29.98 - 07/27/2004
# Fushigi Yugi - The Mysterious Play Vol. #1 - 175 minutes - $24.98 - 07/27/2004
# Heat Guy J Vol. #7 (also w/box) - 75 (120) minutes - $29.98/39.98 - 07/20/2004
# Lupin the 3rd TV Vol. #07: Royal Scramble - 125 minutes - $24.98 - 07/13/2004

From their signature series line, they'll also be releasing Sailor Moon S 6, Tenchi Muyo OVA 4, Tenchi Universe 4 and Trigun 6 on 07/13/2004 for $19.99 MSRP.

Geneon also earns my love with the announcement of the Sailor Moon S Thin Pack DVD Box Set, a 6 volume set in thinpack cases for $99.98. The discs themselves are the same as the original series with a total running time of 890 minutes, just done in thinpacks and in a box. Yes, box. This is due on 07/06/2004.

Hell YES... I was about to pick up Sailor Moon S v.1 and v.2 the other day, but I'm glad I held off! And I can FINALLY start picking up Fushigi Yuugi! YAAY!
Rob:

Sheesh - it took them long enough. Since I didn't pay full price for the second box (I didn't even pay for the first one ), I still feel I got my money's worth, but honestly, Geneon should have released Fushigi Yuugi as individual disks (or just lowered the price of the box) sooner.

Well, way back in the day, I picked up the FY box sets for about $100 each, so it wasn't that bad.

Yay! I can finally get that back. I bought the Japanese version at a con years ago, but lost it almost immediatly.

Don't be so careless this time, OK?

Does anyone else here feel that the CHOBITS soundtrack BGM [I bought "Original Soundtrack 001" out of a used bin... only Clamp-related item I own...] reflects stylistic influences of Jobim? I seem to find myself trying to whistle "Girl From Ipanema" after listening to tracks such as "And the World Also Starts Today".

Ben,

I've thought for a long time that RANMA 1/2 would make a great live action series! With abstract, stylized backgrounds and liberal use of wire-works and bullet-time for the fight sequences.

I've come here today to invite all of you to enjoy my very own internet radio station LAUGHING COW RADIO. I thought it might be of interest here because it features (1) Anime soundtracks and (2) Shibuya-Kei (Japanese hipster music) as well as other selections from my CD collection. The station is at wakeup.to/laughingcow but to listen, you will need to sign up for a free account at Live365.com (there is a link from my homepage). It is a bit of a pain in the ass, but Live365 pays royalties, so I will never have threats from the RIAA hanging over me. In addition to Shibuya-Kei and Anime soundtracks, the station has lots of Bossa Nova, Vocalese, and other rock, jazz, and soundtrack music from the last half century. Feel free to listen when you're at work and be sure to send me comments. Enjoy!

p.s. Thanx to Jack & Ron for their permission to post this here.

p.p.s. The station is absolutely FREE. Live365 will ask you to sign up for their pay "premium" service but my radio station will always be 100% FREE for listeners.

Rob,

Someone'll probably do it someday... heck, we've already got those terrible Dragonball Z, Lupin the 3rd (which is actually coming out on R2 DVD very soon), and Gundam live-action movies and the actually very good Bishojou Senshi Sailor Moon and of course the AWESOME Great Teacher Onizuka tv series
post #112 of 3082
On that re-release of Fushigi Yugi, how are they doing that? As parts? Ind. disks?
The first box is 650min and that re-release says 175 minutes?

Stacey:

Probably as four disks, with a 7-6-7-6 episode count, which is what the boxed sets have. It sounds like they are just going to repackage the disks, and not create a new set of masters.

Can anybody give me a recommendation for or against Tokyo Godfathers? I can see it in the theatre tonight, if I act fast, but I don't want to spend time and money if it's not too good.
Thanks.

It's Satoshi Kon, how can it be bad?

Christopher:

I'll second Rob's vote. Satoshi Kon is very good, and even doing a remake, I'd pay full price to see anything he's done.

We saw Tokyo Godfathers in the theater in Ann Arbor a few weeks back - I thought it was a good movie.

It is kind of a christmas movie, with definite religous overtones. Not my thing, but I always have respect for people with a lot of spiritual beliefs (whether I agree or not).

Summation:
I would say, you could call it a Funny and Heartwarming Christmas story, Japanese style. A homeless guy, a homeless transsexual, and a homeless teenage girl find an abandoned baby and try to make things right.

Some very funny parts. Worth seeing. Anime on the big screen is sweet.

Any news of when the new Tenchi OAV3 will be available in the US?

Tenchi OVA3 hasn't been licensed yet (and Geneon stated while I was at their press conf at Otakon 03' that they were NOT interested).

Lindsay... two great import sites are:
www.cdjapan.co.jp
and
