HTF Anime Discussion Part VII - Page 19

Alanna:

Manga Anime Cartoon is a known bootleg company. The Pirate Anime FAQ has lots of good information to help you avoid these in the future. Also, and unfortunately, many online stores sell boots and legitimate items, which means you have to be extra careful when ordering online from a new store that you haven't dealt with before.

Lorenzo, Christopher:

I'll second Christopher about Mazinger Z. If it does get licensed, I would really expect it will be ADV, since they have the funds to take on a series like Mazinger Z that probably wouldn't sell as well as some of the newer series coming out.

All:

I kicked off May's leg of the HTF Anime Challenge 2K4 with disks 1 and 2 of Genesis Climber Mospeada. So far, it's maintaining its rewatchability.

Not much too add - slept at 3:30 am playing ff xi.

Oh to make the post anime related: I got S-Cry-Ed #6. Fun series, worth watching.

/lurks again...

Alanna: Utena is weirdly addicting. You have been warned....

Woo:

LOL. Sounds like you need more sleep.

Christopher:

Sorry, no LDs here.

My friend lent me his Initial D DVD from Tokyopop and told me to check out the Dubbed version. What has this world come to!!! This kind of Dubbing should be banned dude. Like you know, cool! This has got to be one of the worst dubs I have seen. This ranks up there with Green Legend Ran!!
Woo: Utena Rose 1 & 2 shipped today so I should have it in my hands by Saturday if all goes well Today my BF brought home FFXI for the PC. I didn't realize it needed 6 gigs to run! Oh geez... hopefully can get online with it tomorrow after work.

JohnAD: Thanks for the link to the FAQ. I avoid boots like the plague because the quality is usually extremely horrendous. And I don't want to think I'm buying a DVD and end up with some really iffy looking VCDs. Argh.

Watched Elf Princess Rane this morning... it was amusing and fairly interesting. I was disappointed though that there was a "preview" for the 3rd episode but there seems to be NO 3rd episode. Wonder what happened there? It was a cute show with alot of potential. Dragon Half was another fun one that only has two eps...
Aside from the Japanese sense of humour [in the Anime Encyclopedia there is mention of a parody show couched as "two fake episodes and a fake trailer for a nonexistent third episode" and another which claims to be a sequel, but isn't, and has the subtitle "Somehow, this feels like the First Episode..."], there were a number of shows particularly in the late 90s which were made on spec and didn't sell, so that only the first couple of episodes exist. An example, I think, is Idiot Menace Photon, and there's another, Princess Marmalade or something, which I once saw for sale cheap but refrained from buying [because I don't like starting something I can't finish].

Romar:

That's well known among the fans. Anime on DVD had a long-running thread in their forums when the first disk came out. Unfortunately, Tokyopop doesn't seem to take the general run of anime fans too seriously. They obviously feel that people are going to snap up whatever they put out, regardless of creative editing. Their track record is less than stellar (problems getting Saint Tail out, removing the eyecatches on early disks of GTO, the aforementioned Initial D), and they have a long way to go before I'm going to buy more DVDs from them.

Yep. Afterall, I'm not a real anime fan. I don't like Squaresoft, J-Pop, subtitled anime (somewhat), most cutesy/shojo/magical girl anime, and being called an otaku.

Shit, I really should check out that dub sometime. I think it would be absolutely funny. Am I the only one who thinks that way? Come on! Anime with dialogue completely changed to an urban dialect with slang! What's not to love, dawg?

Quote:

And what exactly is wrong with that? It's only like 5 seconds. Big deal. Sure, it's nice to have them, but I wouldn't flip out if they were not there.

Now Alanna will be infected with the virus known as FFXI!
Tony:

But then why include them as an extra? Either do them all in the show (like they did in later disks), or don't do them at all. In addition, the eyecatches for GTO are different for each episode, rather than the same one for all of them, which is the norm.

Here's an analogy:

Say you pick up the latest Killswitch Engage album (just picked that one since it's in your sig). And, say, when you get it home after spending your hard-earned cash on it, you find out that 10 seconds of each and every song have been edited out of the middle. You find out later that some joker in marketing made that decision. You'd certainly be angry. Then, a month after you bring home your edited copy, you find out that the Japanese import version has the unedited tracks. Now, you'd be even angrier.

While the eyecatches may not be exactly at that level, it's certainly frustrating when TP (or any other company for that matter) can't be bothered to get things right, especially when it probably would have saved them some money to do so.

Nice analogy, however it is farfetched. Sure, the marketing people at Roadrunner Records can be really stupid. Just take a look at the last Spineshank album, which was scheduled to come out worldwide in May last year, but ended up hitting in September the US and in July in Japan and Europe. Roadrunner US claimed the delay was for "marketing reasons" but I saw absolutely no marketing done for the album. Anyhoo, I don't think that Roadrunner would do something as silly as that.

But if your analogy would be true, yes, that would piss me off. Especially if they cut out the softer parts in each song. A better analogy would be if they cut out the two short instrumental interludes. And yes that would still make me mad.

Wow, that was quite the rambling post.

Nothing really exciting for me tonight. I got through disk 3 of Genesis Climber Mospeada.

Uhh....I haven't watched any anime in days because i've been caving to the guilty pleasure of watching my Dawson's Creek season 1. hehe....it's been good to get the 'girliness' out of me. I used to be a huge 'chick flick' fan but, ever since they started to suck...well, I should say, ever since I became aware that the one's I was watching sucked (thanks Dave!!), I only watch the one's with an ounce of originality. (Lost in Translation...? Not that it's a 'chick flick', but I guess that's probrably why it's actually good!)
Wow, that was rambling too.
So, long story short, Dawson's Creek has taken the place of anime in the short run to give myself a quick 'chick flick' fix before going back to marathon Angelic Layer. I have 5 disks and I'm still on disk 1!!

Watched Eps 3 and 4 of Sakura Wars TV series. It looks like they took the plot exactly from the first game on the Sega Dreamcast. I loved that game even though I did not understand nor knew how to read Japanese. Yet I managed to finish it 5 times to see all of the endings for each girl.

Watching the show definitely brought back memories of the game.

My Sailor Moon Seasons 1 and 2 arrived yesterday but I wasn't at home so I will have to pick it up. I still have to finish my Chobits and Witch Hunter Robin sets.

I think my next purchase will go towards Azumanga series as it seems to be quite popular. I'm going to have to borrow my friend's disc 1 and see.

I finished Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi last night... the 2nd to last episode was HILARIOUS.

Am I the only one who liked / collected this show? No one here ever talks about it, I never see files on any of the "unmentionable" sites for downloading it or anything... I feel like the only one who collected it

Alanna:

Heh - expect to watch less anime. A lot less.

Let me know if you end up on the Unicorn server or the Lakshmi server *over thirty one servers named after Final Fantasy summons, with 3-5000 people on each*.

My main character is Wooman, but I have four mules on the Unicorn SERVER-

* Ramenchef, female hume in bastok
* Pageup, female tarutaru in Windurst
* Toofast, Mithra in windurst
* Tallest, female Elvaan in San'Doria

On the Lakshmi Server, i have one character.
* Wooman, Elvaan male

You will be confused in the first three hours. Areas are huge, and you will be walking most of the time.

If you want a world pass, then let me know via wjpark01@optonline.net
post #558 of 3082
Nono Bryan....I have been collecting it but i'm still waiting for my 4th disk to get here. The show is quite good once you get into it.. I agree...

Alanna, welcome to FFXI!

Please tell me when you're going to go online FFXI, and I'll get you a worldpass to Unicorn server.
Hi all. My BF and I were fighting over the FFXI Online game this morning so we went and got another copy so we can both play at the same time. We spent the ENTIRE afternoon (about four hours) trying to get us both on the same server. Wish I had checked here first. We ended up on Fairy just a few min ago and are finally going to bed. That was a pain in the butt! Maybe I can make a second character on the Unicorn server if no one minds playing with a newbie (although I do have some MMORPG experience with Ultima Online awhile back). I swore I'd never get into a MMORPG again since UO took over my life but... oh well... it IS Final Fantasy! The game looks spectacular on the new computer but absolutely horrible (like a Playstation One game) on my laptop. Ah well.

I thought it was really cool the servers were named after summons, then again maybe I'm just weird.

This also marks the first day in quite sometime that I haven't watched any anime at all... the beginning of a trend maybe? LOL
post #561 of 3082
/off topic

Alanna:

Heh - stay on Fairy. See if there are too many morons or not. If so then switch - one worldpass can let you adn your Significant Other play on the other server. In this MMORPG one character is quite enough since you can change jobs any time. I just wanted more inventory space and a break from playing my normal chars.

Just to let you wonderful folks know, I am getting a 51" toshiba RPTV on Thursday. Only will turn the contrast down, and recalibrate on Saturday.

Woo:

Congrats!

No really exciting news for me, other than I watched disk 4 of Genesis Climber Mospeada.

What's the general opinion on Scrapped Princess for those who have seen it? I downloaded the series from somewhere and was wondering if it was worth watching or not. You may be asking yourself, well, why download it and waste space on your computer if you didn't know anything about it? Well, I just got cable modem and just started downloading series that were recommended(Full Metal Alchemist- amazing, best show, anime or otherwise ever in my opinion, Naruto- OK so far, not great), shows I want to know the conclusion to(Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu- pretty funny so far, but is there a plot to this?), and then titles that just sounded cool(Scrapped Princess) Thanks for any input guys.

Back to lurk mode.

Anyone here waiting for Giant Robo to be released in the US?

Tired of waiting,I bought this set below expecting it to be a region 3 release. Out of curiousity I put it in my G/Fs player when it arrived and it worked. Its region 0 not 3.

A nice set - 4 DVDs in a beautiful holder

Would LOVE Giant Robo on DVD in R1. Fun fun show to watch.

Alanna - I didn't realize this, but bunch of ex htf gamers are on Leviathan. Good group of guys and gals, I might add. I plan to create a new char there myself tonite so that I can join them. Never hurts to have friends from RL on these servers to enjoy the game with *rather than the usual menagerie of asshats*. PM me if you are interested.
At least the first 4 Giant Robo episodes were done on U.S. LD; I have 1 and 2, and I'm gradually attempting to acquire the others. Suppose I'll have to finish with imports, though. I like the show enough to do that. By the way, there's a decent English translation of Suikoden -- don't ask me to render that in Chinese, I can't do Mandarin -- the old Chinese novel which formed the basis of the Yokoyama manga from which many of the minor characters are drawn, which was done by an English customs officer in China many years ago. I highly recommend it to everyone. For some reason, although about half of Hong Kong action movies are based upon one or another of the Suikoden stories, and it's been made into manga &c. on occasion, it's never been animated in its own right [there are a couple of anime with "suikoden" in the title, but they're only distantly related at most]. Too bad.

Congrats Woo. You will never want to go back to a little screen again. We seem to spend a majority of our hours watching anime on our X1. The idea of going from like 80" back to 27" was so appalling that I couldn't return the X1. (I was going to return it and buy the Infocus 4805 DLP with a faster wheel).
Alanna, if you need a worldpass to Unicorn, tell me. I will add you on. It's a great server.

Eric, SP is awesome, you won't be disappointed. It has one of the worst cliffhangers ever. Worse than Escaflowne's cliffhangers. When you watch it, you'll be like "ugh, I can't stop watching it" mode. CLiffhangers are evil.
I finished up Genesis Climber Mospeada tonight. It has good rewatch value, and, while certainly not a classic like Macross, it's worth watching. A strong 'B'.
