HTF Anime Discussion Part VII - Page 14

yaoi acronym for yama-nashi, ochi-nashi, imi-nashi "no climax, no resolution, no meaning", a semi-derogatory catchall term applied to applied to stories focussing on male homosexuality, particularly the non-stop hot-and-heavy kind as opposed to the more romantic shounen ai. Sometimes rendered by certain young ladies of my acquaintaince [the target demographic for this sort of matter] as yamete! atashi (no) oshiri (ga) ittai!, roughly "stoppit already, my arse hurts", which albeit linguistically incorrect has the virtue of describing the content quite clearly.
Uuuuhhhh...I get the first part, but when you drift into yamete atshi whatever, you've got me lost. And what the hell is shounen ai? Let's see here, I know only one of the Japanese words you just mentioned (no).

LOL! I never knew that's what it meant. I'm gonna tell all the fangirls! It's gramatically incorrect in Japanese though (it should be "watashi" for a male, but I guess that would mess up the acronym)

Now, what is YURI an acronym for? I can only imagine
post #393 of 3082
Rob:

It's not grammatically incorrect; it's just girlish, which I think is part of the point. O-shiri is also a girlish way of softening down shiri. If you imagine that phrase being said by a stereotypical 'femme' gay man, it'll make more sense.

Tony:

He explained it (i.e. stoppit, my ass hurts). Shounen ai would be the more romantically-based stories, while yaoi would be more focused on the sex.

OK. But now all I want to know is what watashi means! Man I feel like a hardcore LOTR fan that wants to learn Elvish. Maybe I'll just back off the Japanese words...

Watashi is just the masculine was of saying "atashi"... or "I"

Or at least that's the way I learnt it
Watashi is used to mean "I" and it's about the most connotation-free way to do that. Of course Japanese has few real pronouns [omae "honorably in front of me", kisama "my lord", boku "your servant" -- all of these are used as pronouns, while the actual pronoun kare "he" is used to mean "boyfriend"], and this is no exception: it is a contraction of watakushi which is also used [mostly in formal speech, or by highborn women] to mean "I" but actually denotes "private", "one's own things", "one's own affairs"; it can be still furhter contracted to the laconic washi, used by primarily by old men at the present day.

Tony: now you know how the rest of us feel. On the other hand, if you'll take a Japanese class and watch in Japanese with subtitles you can count your anime purchases as an "educational expense"...

WARNING: THIS IS NOT AN IRS APPROVED STATEMENT. IRS EMPLOYEES HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO INTERPRET THE TAX CODE, AND THIS SUGGESTION IS PROBABLY AS VALID AS ANYTHING ONE OF THEM COULD TELL YOU, BUT DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Rob, Tony:

There are several ways to say 'I' in Japanese:

Watakushi - quite formal
Watashi - semi-formal, these days pretty gender neutral
Atashi - feminine, not formal
Boku - masculine, not formal
Ore - masculine, pretty rough
Washi - not formal, but old and provincial

It should be noted that overuse of watashi is frowned upon.

Eh. I'd rather just keep to the dubs. That and I'd rather learn a language that I can actually use here in America.

So, with tomorrow being DVD Day (TM), do you plan on getting anything? Personally, I'm gonna get that new Fear Factory album, Archetype, at Best Buy for only $8. It does come with a bonus DVD, so it counts for DVD Day.

All: Whew, I'm glad I'm not the only one. It was beginning to look like I was some crazy person for liking the stuff. Its usually very happy and upbeat music and I like that, but I also love the sobering English version of the Fruits Basket themes. I think they are actually better than the Japanese counterparts! Usually I listen to AOR (think Journey, Starship and Foreigner type bands), hard rock (Whitesnake/Def Leppard type bands), power metal (Judas Priest, Iced Earth stuff), prog (Queensryche, Fates Warning) and more hip hop and R&B than I ever imagined. My BF listens to that so I'm starting to get used to some of it. Atleast the more radio friendly stuff.

Fleetwood Mac is pretty good, and I have a wide tolerance for alot of 80s music (anything from Duran Duran to Kenny Rogers, George Strait to George Michael and back again). 70s hard rock is alright too, especially Deep Purple, Rainbow and UFO.

As for MMORPGs.... I was into Ultima Online for awhile back around 98-99 somewhere in there, and played it obsessively. Whether or not I would pay $50 for a game and another $10 a month to play it again is debatable. True Fantasy for the XBox intrigues me as does the Warcraft Worlds game but FFXI just doesn't look impressive enough for me to dip into that world again. It sucks being a newbie in those games because you get picked on, PK'd and generally kicked around until you learn the ropes. Kind of a humiliating experience all around. Then you become all powerful and start kicking around the ppl that did it to you in the beginning. LOL

DVD Day! I'm picking up Master and Commander and maybe Win A Date with Tad Hamilton! Its recieved some decent reviews and looks like a fun movie. I could use some fun after going to a funeral today and all the work politics going on. Ugh. Target here I come! Right at 8:15 AM! Now off to work I go!

I'm pretty fluent in spanish, of course that's mandatory if you live in South Florida for the majority of your life

Me llamo Roberto, como te llamas?

Yo no gustar hablamos espanol en a HTF Anime Discussion, hablamos ingles o nihingo, por favor!

It's only useful for watching spanish gameshows here in Orlando, but in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area (where my parents live), it's very much needed. When I used to work down there, I was constantly talking to people that didn't speak a word of english.

I'd like to be picking up Azumanga Daioh, but I am literally broke until I find a new job

Damn, it's hard to type Thai in English.

Azumanga Daioh and Master and Commander for me tomorrow. Maybe AC/DC Highway to Hell Remaster.

Funny thing, but I actually like the complexity and diferrentness [which I would not use, except that "difference" has lost its force] of Japanese. In fact I'm teaching it to myself [a crime in most jurisdictions -- don't tell] and am making some sort of progress [given that they give their own children eight years], particularly on the written language. Of course, I'm a prize-winning Latinist, so what do I know?

Isn't that "japones"?
Tony:

Nope, no DVDs this week. I'm saving up for next week though, and I'll probably do another CD Japan order here soon.

Alanna:

If you're talking about musical tastes, mine certainly have changed since I graduated from college. Before then, I was listening to mostly metal (Metallica, Blue Oyster Cult, et al.), and being from the Seattle area, grunge. I also picked up some interest in Baroque-period music (Vivaldi, mostly). Now, I mostly listen to J-pop (mochiron ), techno/techno-metal, some nu-metal (Linkin Park is a fave), some female singers (Sarah McLachlan, Loreena McKennit), the occasional Fleetwood Mac or metal album. Today, I just came across a new Japanese band called Rin', which mix traditional Japanese instruments with a bit of techno. Needless to say, I was hooked after hearing the sample .

Christopher:

Yeah, there are a few of us self-teaching Japanese students around here. I agree that part of the fun is learning a different way to think.

Probably. There's 2 things I don't know how to say in Spanish... "Japanese" and "Parking Lot"

I've been listening to Porno Graffitti's "Worldillia" over and over again the last few days... it's an AWESOME CD. I really enjoy their sound... (You guys may know them from the second GTO theme and the first FMA theme)
Wow...lots of differing music tastes around here! I guess I'll add in my 2 cents since I actually have my portable DVD player hooked up here at work just to play a music DVD even though I have cable in the lobby.
I listen to j-pop/pop (Jessica Simpson/Britney Spears) Don't tell anyone!, I have a bad weakness for chicks with guitars (Michelle Branch and the like), quite abit of rock influence from Dave made Stacey-style (Linkin Park, Evanescence etc), some classical is also cool.
But my true passion as far as music goes has to belong to the folk/blues/jazz section.
I absolutly Love Jewel, Damien Rice, Norah Jones and Dave Matthews Band. Those are my real soft spot!
There...that's my 3 cents worth!
Back to anime talk!
Stacey

Alanna -

Only PvM currently in FFXI; there is a PvP module in the works, but it will be sorta like Gladiator , i.e, a specific area where pvp is allowed; by consent. Or so I hear.

Trust me - the game is hard at higher levels, the monsters have all your abilities as well. But the community can be fun, and it's cool to just romp through the world of V'Anadiel. And all pc, ps2 and Japanese players on the same servers makes for a unique experience.

Hmmmm...quiet today. Since nothing's on TV tonight, I'll be working through more of Excel Saga tonight.

Picked up Master and Commander single disc version @ FYE for $9.99 after rebate. Haven't even seen the movie yet. The markup on the special edition is too much for me - I'm not paying $25ish for a DVD unless it's anime, dammit! $40 for a special edition - whew!
Dave:

Master and Commander is a great movie. I saw it in the theater, and I wish I had had a chance to see it again. A sequel would be nice, too . I still haven't picked up the DVD, and I probably won't be able to for a while.

John.
Master & Commander is $15.99 at Target. Picked that up along with Win A Date with Tad Hamilton! today. They wanted $29.99 for the 2 disc set. I'm not paying almost twice the price for ANY DVD just for a disc of EXTRAs. JEEZ. Haven't seen it yet but hope I can squeeze it in tomorrow.

Woo - Still not going to attract me to the game.. I am not paying $100 for the hard drive and another $40 or whatever for the broadband adapter to play a game I still have to pay $12 a month for. And I don't think my laptop would appreciate trying to run it. I almost killed it off with Warcraft III back awhile ago, which was the last game I really played on the PC... ahhh well... maybe will go for True Fantasy or whatever its called when it gets released. I've heard rumors of no monthly fees on that one and the anime look is soo sweet.

Stacey: if you like Evanescence check out the Finnish band Nightwish. Evanescence is basically a copy of that band, IMO. Within Temptation's "Mother Earth" is also similiar. And Lacuna Coil who for some reason have gained some underground popularity in the States. I NEVER saw that one coming...

Legend of Crystania the Movie and Once Upon a Time showed up today. I've heard that OUaT sucks but always wanted to see it - back when it was "Windaria" on VHS so ..... it will stink and I'll smile and try to enjoy it hehhe. For some reason I think I've said that before, but I'm too tired to remember. I have nothing new to add. I suck. LOL
post #412 of 3082
Personally I am very very fond of Lodoss War (perhaps partially for nostalgia factor). I didn't really like the Legend of Crystania at all. Barely got through watching it.
Hope you like it.

Heads up - anyone catch the notification of the Evangelion Platinum discs? Basically it looks like it will be an individual disc release of the Renewal remastered discs of just the series (not the movies).

You know, I'm both glad and not glad to see. Glad because the video looks very cleaned up (and the jitter supposedly removed), and the new 5.1 mixes will be cool too. But, honestly, I'm a little ornery at ADV. So much for the Director's Cut discs I just bought. Dammit, waste of $40.

I will probably Ebay off or otherwise sell my standard Eva set posthaste - Stacey and I finished watching it just a few weeks ago, after all - and I could use the money for the trip. I will rebuy the damn remastered discs as they come out, I guess. When you're watching anime on 80" or so of screen, tweaked out video is always good!

If anyone is interested in the standard perfect collection (plus the DC discs) on the cheap, let me know. I'll negotiate. Otherwise, they're going up on ebay tonight before the common masses find out about the new releases.

WOLF'S RAIN!! WOLF'S RAIN!! WOLF'S RAIN!! WOLF'S RAIN!! It's almost heeeeeeere! it'll be airing this saturday along with NEW Inuyasha epsiodes on the new action block cartoon network set up. I also pre-ordered the LE Box for when it (WOLF'S RAIN) comes out on June 22. it comes with the soundtrack and a plushy wolf (Kiba)!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! (can you tell I'm excited?) if you want to see what the box looks like they have a pic. of it at animenation.com, just type it in, even though I ordered mine from Deep Discount DVD.

Here are the extras on the disc:

Quote:
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Platinum: 01 is the first release of seven DVD volumes, which over the course of 26 episodes will include new cast and crew commentary, four bonus Directors' Cut episodes and seven animatics (moving storyboards). Each volume also includes a limited edition collector's slipcover in an exclusive metallic finish, limited to the first pressings only.

While I hate double dipping, I'm interesting not in the upgraded PQ, but in the commentary's on the disc, so I'll end up picking these up. I wonder if ADV will release this with a new/different/better box for this release of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Eww, you're actually interested in hearing the guy who did Shinji in the dub and the Founder of ADV talk about a show they had nothing to do with the creation of?

I'm not sure if I want to finish my R2 set or get the R1s... R2s are only 1 more disc, but there's no subs (not that I need them for Eva, I've seen it 18 frickin' times). Decisions Decisions I'll probably just get the R1s as long as the quality doesn't take a nosedive. Where's my limited edition monolith packaging + volume 1 ADV? Now THAT would have impressed me
post #417 of 3082
Should I get these? I still haven't seen Evangelion, and I think these will be a good investment.

Uh, technically they had something to do with the creation of the show. Just the dub, but still, it's part of the show and might be interesting to hear their comments on it.

Same here. Help us out here!
Probably the only time in my life that I will ever wish for ADV to acquire anything, but since Manga Entertainment won't release it on DVD because Gainax can't or won't let them make a dub -- I wish ADV would buy Gunbuster from them and include it as an extra with their ultimate Evangelion box set, so that people could actually see it in a decent version and get a feel for where Eva was coming from. Nothing exists in a vacuum, and that spectacular WIDESCREEN BLACK-AND-WHITE final episode cries out to be seen...

Most anime music I listen to, it is to remind me of the show, which conjures up pleasant associations. Exceptions: the ADPolice Files soundtrack -- the show gives me the shudders, but Lou Bonnevie's English-language late 80s rock, much of it written by Japanese, is intriguing on its own; Kon'ya wa Hurricane from Bubblegum Crisis, which I've been known to use to get myself moving in the morning -- pounding beat and voice of Oomori Kinuko are far better than coffee; the [b]Silent Moebius[/i] music album I have -- I've never seen the show, but the music is intriguing, in fact I suspect Tony might like some of it once he gets over the foreign language [although the techno Omen of Death is in a kind of computer-generated English]; the Sailormoon Orgel Fantasia which I use for a diagnostic tool; Chobits soundtrack from a bargain bin [never seen the show], which is tolerable to listen to occasionally; and some of the stuff from Kimagure Orange road and Gunbuster just rocks. Otherwise, I typically rip the opening and closing themes from my LDs and listen while I work, because I can't very well watch.

I'd rank Gunbuster ABOVE Neon Genesis Evangelion. Gunbuster is just... amazing.

I'm hoping someone gets the rights and properly remasters it now that Manga has (supposedly) lost the rights to it.

Yeah, if you don't have Eva, pick up the new discs... the remastering the Japanese did is amazing. They look and sound about 10 times better than the older ADV discs.
