If you loved episode 1 of AzuDai, you're really gonna like the rest of the series... episode 1 was the weakest, IMHO.

I can't wait to watch the anime. The manga kicks ass.

Well, just finished watching Azumanga Daioh.
My professional opinion is that for the first couple of eps. I honesty wasn't sold. But by the end I was rolling on the floor laughing and crying at the same time because it was so great and I wanted more!!

This series definitly gets two Big Thumbs Up!

Well I did it.

I registered for Otakon 2004.

That said, I am eagerly awaiting my copy of azumanga daioh DVD with box- I have read and re-read the admittedly over-adapted but still fun ADV Manga's 3 volume release and loved it.
I'm also looking forward to picking up my copy of Azumanga Daioh. I'm getting The Monster Legacy Set on the 27th as well.

I'm greatly looking forward to both of those -- as well as the first box set of Marmalade Boy, which is also coming that day. The 27th is shaping up to be a bit on the expensive side...

I have learned the art of pre-ordering at rightstuf. At first it was a pain but now I have a notebook I keep everything in order in and just mark it in my checkbook what's clearing once a week.
I have to admit, Azumanga Daioh kinda caught me by surprize though because it cleared from my account 3 weeks in advance!!

Ben: THANKS! I didn't know Soul Hunter was coming out in a lovely, GLORIOUS BRICK! Yes I just preordered it. Burn Up Excess I already have preordered though. I also have Dirty Pair Flash, Crest of the Stars and Sorcerer Hunters, and hope there are many more bricks on their way to us in the future.

Glad I'm not the only one that appreciates the bricks! May they live long and prosper!

JohnAD: I wouldn't call myself a big fan of Tarantino either, I just think Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and now Kill Bill are all solid movies. The first time my BF "made" me watch Pulp Fiction, I HATED IT. The second time he coaxed me into watching it (its one of his favorite movies) I began to see the genius in it. And by the third time, I thought it was great. No one can win me over on Reservoir Dogs however.
Ohhh I do have a question, for those that have seen Kill Bill Vol. 1. The anime sequence, my BF (who hates anime) said "that's really cool, if there was anime like that I'd watch it." Mmmmmmkay so what is out there that is "like that"? He liked the visual style and the grittiness of it. I usually go for fluffy comedic stuff but am willing to give something else a shot. I know someone is going to mention Ghost in the Shell. I have it, and he won't watch it. He also didn't want to see Ninja Scroll after a co-worker of ours watched it and claimed it to be the stupidest and worst thing ever. (I have not seen it). Soooo any suggestions? Preferably shorter series or movies since I can't really see him going for anything too long as a starter.

If he likes the violence, show him Berserk... he'll absolutely love it!

For live-action, the sequence is also VERY reminicent of Leon

That's about right. Ninja Scroll is something that people say they like to look cool... at least that's my opinion. Really, can anyone in this forum say with a straight face that they like Ninja Scroll?

Alanna:

LOL. Reservoir Dogs is the only one I own. Between Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction (the two QT movies I've seen), both are certainly well done, but neither are in the category of "Good enough to double dip". So far, only John Woo's The Killer and LOTR have been good enough for that, although the Star Wars movies and Charade will probably make the list, and possibly Gladiator.

Rob:

I actually do like Ninja Scroll, although there certainly are far better movies out there. I (generally) agree with your statement, although I think it applies more to people who aren't serious anime fans, but want to appear as if they were.

John, you should really see Jackie Brown... it's my personal favorite QT movie.
Rob:

I'm sure I'll get around to seeing it one of these days.

John.
I agree, Jackie Brown is a must-see. Its my fav QT movie too! Its very different and intellectually stimulating all with a cool vibe that kicks-arse!

Azumanga Daioh! I keep hearing about it here and now I'm interested... nono dont do this to me I can't collect another series! I can't!
oh and
Rob: I don't think it was the violence he liked, just the whole style and look of the anime. But I'll look into Beserk. Is it good though? I hate to buy something that is just violent and sucks and he wont watch it anyway lol

Alanna:

Berserk is one of the best anime series I've seen in a while. It has a compelling story, and the end is just so messed up, but in a good way. I'm really looking forward to rewatching this series. I'll second Rob's recommendation, without reservation.

John.
I'm with Alanna. I have heard so much about Azumanga Daioh (or whatever the hell it is) but I have no idea what it is about or if I should look into it. Anyone care to enlighten me on this subject?

Bryan, thanks for posting those GITS:SAC (that sounds so dirty) specs! Man, that sure does sound like a kickass DVD! However, I'm still going to stick to my word and not buy it. What's the point in buying something that you can see on Cartoon Network for free?
Okay, I have a question for you all here. Have any of you heard of a CGI anime thing called Galerians? I'm very interested in this release because there will be a special audio track on the DVD with the English audio track, and music from American bands like Fear Factory, Slipknot, The Vandals, Devildriver, The Ataris, God Head, and others. I just want to know if this is a good anime to get.

If it sucks, then I won't bother getting it because I hear that Fear Factory's next music video will be the song "Archetype" and the video will have lots of footage from that anime.

I really like the sound of this release!

Yes, it will have the original Japanese audio, but who cares about that when you have Burton C. Bell and Corey Taylor screaming?!
Tony:

Because you'll be able to listen to GITS in DTS .

All:

Just working my way through rewatching Mahoromatic - Something More Beautiful. I watched vol. 2, and my previous assessment still stands (so far). Once I finish the last disk, I'll be able to give a better report.

But John, I'm a cheap bastard! :p)
Azumanga Daioh is a show completly based upon character development. Really, the entire show...there is no plot!!
It's like watching one really big eps. of Friends with no ongoing plot structure. hehe....but in a good way!

My favorite characters are Sakaki and Osaka. Osaka reminds me of my mom, that's not meant as an insult but it's just the truth! She can be so dumbfounded sometimes!!!

Yeah, my "tears have been flowing like waterfalls" since last night waiting for the next disk.
I had my mom watch the first eps. and she fell alseep....sigh...aww well!
Tonight, I drag Dave into the pits of agonizing hell once he's seen the first disk and has to wait for the next one!hehe...
Naw, it's not That great, but it is pretty damn good!

From AnimeOnDVD...

GitS: SAC Update (02:18 PM EST): After the announcement yesterday, we went and talked briefly with Bandai Entertainment about it. According to them, the special edition release will list for $49.95 and not the listed $59.95 in the press release. We also got confirmation that the entire series will be done in DTS and there are multiple special editions planned, though no details given on what would be in them.

By the way... it's well worth it to get the soundtrack with Ghost in the Shell:SAC. I've listened to both volumes released thus far about 30 times and it's utterly amazing! Yoko Kanno just can't do any wrong in my book

Rob:

There are also a number of new title announcements on AoD today...I'm going to have to update my lists when I get home tonight. I also have to go through and ThinPak some series; I haven't done it since before I moved, and I've got a few series that have started to pile up.

Tony:

Yeah yeah. I just hope they're not limited editions or anything.

3RD!! Berserk was one of my favorite series to date. Good action series with a very messed up story, but it is NOT HAPPY!

It even has a scene VERY similiar to Kill Bill in the middle of the series where a character slaughters a LOT of people (I thought of it when I was watching Kill Bill).

But the series can be definitely a downer if you like happy endings. The "ending" is very messed up (and the story continues in the manga).

Thanks for the input. I will pick up the Beserk Collectiona after my next "overtime day". Just ordered Azumanga Diaoh! (buckled to peer pressure I guess heh) and preordered the Sailor Moon S thinpacks.

For Free on Cartoon network!?

But there is no 5.1!!!

And the great opening song will prolly be cut

Coming in a little late here, but I can honestly say that I like Ninja Scroll. I have the first 2 discs of the tv series that I haven't watched so I can't comment on those, but the movie is quality IMO. Not the best thing I've ever seen but not even close to being bad.
