Sword and Sandal wishlist

I'm sure there's been a thread about this already, but I was just curious about everyone's wishlist. I have two that are foremost in my mind. They are:

Land of the Pharaohs
Quo Vadis?

There are a few others that I'd like to see on DVD. But these two would make me very happy and I could live without the others at that point.

I am soooo glad you brought this up. There is a movie that I would love to see again as I have not seen it since I was a kid.

The 1961 Italian production of The Thief of Bagdad staring Steve Reeves.

The Egyyptian is a must. Story of Ruth would be good, as would Silver Chalice, Quo Vadis, Salome.

I'd like to see widescreen R1 releases of:

THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES (1960, directed by Sergio Leone!)
THE THIEF OF BAGDAD (1961)
GOLIATH AND THE VAMPIRES (1964)
MY SON, THE HERO (1963)

--and an improved DVD edition of ULYSSES (1954)

I was surprised that The Fall of the Roman Empire didn't trade on Gladiator's coattails, considering that both of them dealt with the comeuppance of the Toilet Emperor, Commodus, son (or not) of Marcus Aurelius. (Then the former Commodus became shrink to the new Gladiator in A Beautiful Mind.)

Fall of the Roman Empire has been "promised" for several years now, but nothing seems to have eventuated.

The currently available edition is poor quality and pan and scanned.

Maybe the source material is in poor shape?

Same thing with El Cid.

I was amazed at how similar Fall of the Roman Empire and Gladiator are.

I bought FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE in HONG KONG at HMV.
WIDESCREEN,and a decent print for the clearence price
of $2.50 US. English Subtitled at that. Fluent Italian.

Hercules (Steve Reeves) is available in a good quality widescreen version from Amazon.fr

Title is La Travaux de Hercules

English dubbed or Italian Audio (but no english subtitles)

I'll third the request for (1961 Italian) The Theif of Bahgdad. I'd love to see this on dvd. I loved it so much as a kid that I bought an out of print VHS tape of it on ebay (which unfortunately seems to have been a bootleg). Watched it with the family - my children 8 and 11 loved it. I always had a soft spot for this one - even preferring it over the more well known version starring Sabu.

I don't think its been officially acknowledged, but I think that "Gladiator" is practically a remake of "Fall of the Roman Empire". The opening scenes are practically identical in set-up (i.e. both begin in a battlefield and have Marcus Aurelius about to give up the throne in favor of a favorite soldier). Both films have a romance between Aurelius' daughter and the would-be successor. That said, I think "Gladiator" is a better movie, though I enjoy the more accurate and pessimistic ending of "Fall", regarding Rome's fate, more.

And I'd like to add "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" to the list and echo most of the others. The Italian epics are a particular untapped market. I'm hopeful that the three ancient-era movies opening this year (The Passion, Troy, and Alexander) will open the floodgates.

There is a Yul Brenner R2J box set with Solomon and Sheba, Kings of the Sun, and Taras Bulbas. They look very good but are non-anamorphic.

I don't know french but it was obviously the same page we get when somthing is no longer in print and it had the prompt for you to get an email when it becomes availible again. It also did state the out of print edition was a region 2 release.

Not any more they don't unfortunately.
I'd like to see all the Steve Reeves "epics" given a dust off, a restoration into wide screen, and a dvd release. I'm sure none of them will be as good as I thought they were when I was a kid, but who knows? And let's not forget the likes of Sergio Leone worked on some of them.

And the battle apart is one of the most turgid movies ever made, a total waste of 70mm and everybodies time!! Good for insomniac though!

I know Quo Vadis? is coming, but does anybody know when? This year?

Also would like to see The Egyptian get a nice disc. Haven't seen it in a long time, and never in widescreen (!).

Yes, the Steve Reeves films should be all restored and given their proper release ASAP. Hope whomever holds the distribution rights are you LISTENING ?? LONG OVERDUE !!!!!!!!!

Well quite a few of the Steve Reeves films are available on DVD in Europe and I've just reviewed four number of them available (and still in print) on great looking DVDs from Germany.

* Hercules Unchained (1959)
* The Last Days of Pompeii (1959)
* Romulus and Remus (1961)
* The Trojan Horse (1961)


Plus if you want to learn more about the films, I have detailed guides to Steve Reeves and The Peplum.

Still there are many of his most interesting sounding titles missing-in-action, including his final film, the self-penned Spaghetti Western 'A Long Ride from Hell' - lets just hope that these come to DVD in 2008.

If anyone is interested, all five of the Reg Park Pepla are now available on DVD (with rather varying AV and film quality), and I've just reviewed the lot:

Hercules and the Captive Women (1961)
Hercules in the Haunted World (1961)
Hercules Prisoner of Evil (1964)
Hercules the Avenger (1965)
Maciste in King Solomon's Mines (1964)

I've also written up a short biography of this first British Mr Universe - Reg Park.

Two more Steve Reeves films from Retromedia in a double-bill release. Picture quality is not the best but they are at least in original aspect ratio.

Giant of Marathon - which was mostly helmed by Mario Bava and comes highly recommended.
War of the Trojans - not so well made but still worth watching for genre fans.

Some more R1, OAR Pepla have been released in the shape of Goliath and the Barbarians and Goliath and the Vampires from Wild East (available at Amazon.com).


Some good news, MYA communications have announced a DVD release of the very little known 1971 post-peplum Ritorno del gladiatore più forte del mondo, hitting DVD in May and hopefully with a nice OAR print based on their recent work.

Less good news, the Retromedia latest Peplum DVD is a release of Riccardo Freda's Samson and the 7 Miracles of the World (1961) - it is in OAR but print quality is low and the print is truncated by around 20 minutes. It is doubled with 'Ali Baba and the 7 Saracens' which is full length but cropped to fullscreen. They are promising a release of Alfonso Brescia's Il magnifico gladiatore (1964) which apparently looks infinitely better, but no release date set yet.

We have a tv channel in the Uk called Movies for men that shows the occasional wide screen 60s epic. Last week we had 'The Warrior and the Slavegirl' and Robert Aldrich's dire but compulsive 'Sodom and Gomorrah'. Both were dodgy prints though shown in full wide screen, with the occasional wobble you get when transferring a vhs to dvd format. But better than nothing. Sunday they are showing War of the Trojans. I'm desperate to get a decent widescreen copy of The Trojan Horse but can't find it anywhere.
Tim you recommend a German dvd on your web site but it seems to have disappeared. There are a couple on amazon-de but neither say what ratio it is in and look a bit suspect.
About time more of these wonderful 60s movies got decent treatment on dvd.
