Charlize Theron is AEON FLUX! (MERGED THREAD)

There is a story over at comingsoon.net (not enough posts to link, sorry). Anyway, I have been a big fan of the show and just hope they do justice to this project on the big screen. Plus it has Charlize. How do you go wrong with the beautiful Miss. Theron

Haha! Tyler, you beat me by about 10 minutes! Good job!

From Variety:

In what will bring her a career-best payday near $10 million, Charlize Theron will next star in "Aeon Flux." The Lakeshore Entertainment and Paramount Pictures-financed sci-fi film is based on a futuristic MTV animated series, and MTV Films and Gale Anne Hurd's Valhalla Prods. are producing.

Let's hope it turns out better than Paramount's last two attempts at Lady Superhero fare. Those Tomb Raider flicks were fairly rancid.

MUWAHAHA! I beat Scott to the punch! Just one of the perks to being an insomniac, and internet addict.

I do agree about your concerns. The problem for me with the "Tomb Raider" movies is that they were too much like a video game. What I mean by that is that, gamers please back me up, video games are fun to play, but it gets a bit boring just watching someone else play. The movies were like that for me, in that I felt that I was watching someone else manipulate characters, being totally indifferent to my wants and desires.

But, I digress. Back to "Aeon Flux". Since this is not based on a game I don't think that trying to advance the plot with mindless action will be the major concern for Aeon. From what I remember from the show (I think the last time I saw an episode was about 7 or 8 years ago) there were some really good story lines and deep, complex characters. The animation was edgy, cool, sexy, and smart all at the same time.

That is where I think the problem may lie. The esthetics of the show were so surreal, it was a perfect fit for animation. Bringing these same dynamics to a live action feature could be a tricky proposition. It is going to be a narrow path that the cast and crew tread, in keeping the style the animated show emanated.

I'm not saying that it cannot be done. But, it could prove to be difficult.

Just my 2 cents.

Theron as Flux!?!? Yummy!

I just hope they don't make her get skinny.

Well, with the exception of Monster, she's pretty darn skinny, which is one reason why it is good casting.

It will be interesting to see how the hairdoo looks in real life...

Yeah, but Aeon was borderline grotesquely skinny.

It'll be interesting to see... I don't know if Charlize would be my first choice though.. she's too "cute" to be Aeon IMO.

Not that I'm not interested in seeing her in the costume, though!

I know she's already Elektra, and even though I think she's overrated, I think Jennifer Garner would be a better casting choice for Aeon Flux.

I'm really unsure of how they will pull this off as a live action flick.

I agree with this entirely. Charlize is a beautiful woman, Aeon should have more of an edge to her appearance.

That's what I thought when I heard she was gonna play...Aileen Wuornos!

Personally, I'd have liked to see...say....Milla Jovovich or Parker Posey as Aeon Flux.

But here's the trillion dollar question: who should they get to direct the thing? Alex Proyas? Jonathan Mostow? David Fincher? Hey, I can dream, can't I? More likely they'll hire a German Swedish French guy named Qualoz. He directed the last three Sinead O'Connor videos.

I could get behind Milla as Aeon Flux, but I wouldn't back Parker Posey.

I'd have gone with Carrie Anne Moss about 5 years ago...Charlize is good, but looks nothing like the character.

I also immediately thought of Carrie-Anne Moss (5 years ago) as well for this role.

I think you need someone with the sharp sleek cheekbones if you want the actress to look like the character.

Exactly Patrick!

2 totally unrelated comments about this...

First of all, i can't see how this is going to work as a live action film. I hope it does, i'm just having a hard time seeing it as anything other than animated.

Second, i wouldn't have chosen Charlize for the role based on appearance but after seeing her transformation i'm willing to at least give it a chance. And yes Aeon is skinny so Charlize has that covered, but what about Aeon's ummm ample (seems an understatement) breasts. I think we might be looking at beyond even tomb raider proportions here. Prosthetics? CGI Enhancements?

My question is who do they get for Trevor Goodchild?? Curious to see peoples ideas.
They'll probably completely f' it up and not even have a Trevor. Aren't I just ever the optimist?
My vote for trevor Goodchild: Barry Del Sherman (aka. Butterfield, Clive Barker's Lord Of Illusions)
Wow. Just...wow.

Anyone think this will force MTV to get off their lazy asses and release the rest of the Aeon Flux episodes on DVD?

I'm a big fan of the weirdly surreal Aeon Flux, love that style of animation, my favorite Animatrix segment, Matriculated, is by the same animators. Not sure how it would translate to live-action. I would have preferred a full length animated movie.
Let's hope it's not another Tank Girl.

Do they plan on making the movie as incomprehensible as the cartoon?

Charlize Theron injured on set of Aeon Flux

http://inhome.rediff.com/movies/2004/sep/01theron.htmCharlize Theron injured on set of Aeon Flux

Charlize Theron was injured during the filming of Aeon Flux in Berlin early this week.

People magazine says although this year's Oscar winner did not have to be admitted to hospital, it wasn't known how serious the injury was.

The accident occurred on the sets of the science fiction film when Charlize was doing her own stunts.

She was executing a wire-hanging scene when the mishap took place.

Shooting has been halted to help the actress recover.

To prepare for her title role as Aeon Flux -- a futuristic assassin -- Charlize lost weight, went through a rigorous exercise regime and dyed her hair black from her beautiful blonde.

Her training included a high-protein, low-carb diet and a four-hour daily workout. She also learned some gymnastic moves.

For Monster, which got her an Oscar, she put on weight to fit into the role of a serial killer.

In Aeon Flux, she is a commando, member of a group that rebels against the government. The film is set in the future where most of the population has been wiped out by plague.

Based on Peter Chung's MTV animated series, it also stars Oscar winner (Fargo) Frances McDormand, Marton Csokas and Jonny Lee Miller.

Charlize's next release is a fortnight away. She stars in Head on the Clouds, opposite real life boyfriend, Stuart Townsend.

wow I didnt even know they were making a movie of this.
I may have to pick up the series on dvd
Sadly, the series isn't out on DVD. Maybe MTV will finally put it out to tie in with the movie. I'm also surprised to hear this is in production and that I didn't hear about it before they started filming.
actually the first season of the series
is out on dvd..came out in 1998 I think.
I did a search on dvdpricesearch.com and it only came up on amazon for 79.95 used !!!
damn..hopefully we will see a new release of the complete series (2 seasons I think) and with the liquid telivision shorts
post #26 of 75
The first season is long out of print on DVD. It is technically available used, btu the cheapest one in the Amazon marketplace right now is $80. And hte rest of the series isn't available at all.
Wow $80? Heh, guess my Aeon Flux DVD is worth more than my Criterion Hardboiled (which is no longer OOP).

I'm still pissed that MTV has not released the COMPLETE Aeon Flux series on DVD. Feh. Death to MTV!
Did anyone else think it was weird that none of the press coverage (at least, what I've seen) has mentioned how she was injured? That's one of the first bits of info that usually come out (like Halle Berry's eye).

Some reports say Theron injured her neck while performing stunts. One report says she hurt herself while dangling from a wire, while another said she fell while jumping on a trampoline.

maybe she was doing a wire stunt and fell and landed on her neck on a trampoline.
