20th Century Fox's 'Film Noir Classics' DVD Series - Page 4

I got all the titles in this series and there isn't a single one that I can not recommend. I really Like Call Northside 777, a great James Stewart film. My favorites are Laura, Whirlpool, Somewhere in the night and Kiss of Death.
And can't wait for wave 5 (Fallen Angel is a favorite of mine).
I hope this series surpasses the 24 discs that were originally palnned, cause Fox have many more noirs that needs a dvd release.
I am specially looking for I Wake Up Screaming, Boomerang, House of Strangers, Road House, Hangover Square, The Lodger, Dragonwyck (though I doubt the later one can be classified as a regular noir).

Alright, I went a little crazy last night. I got my boyfriend's father Laura and The Dark Corner for Christmas. I got myself Laura, Nightmare Alley, Panic in the Streets and The House on 92nd Street. I probably won't get around to watching anything until Sunday or Monday.

For me, there are three clear standouts: Laura, Nightmare Alley and Kiss of Death.

Any word on what titles will be in wave #6 or even whether Fox is continuing this series?

I'm really interested in seeing Siodmak's Cry of the City and the long rumored The Lodger and Hangover Square. Though I won't snub my nose at any other selections.

I haven't heard, but the following are coming out the week after next on March 7th.
  • Fallen Angel
  • No Way Out

I sure hope Fox continues past the March wave, since the following are still MIA on R1 DVD (including the three that Jim K just mentioned):

CRY OF THE CITY (1948)
ROAD HOUSE (1948)
FOURTEEN HOURS (1951)
THE LODGER (1944)
HANGOVER SQUARE (1945)
MOONTIDE (1942)
MAN HUNT (1941)
INFERNO (1953)
RIVER'S EDGE (1957)
VIOLENT SATURDAY (1955)
SWAMP WATER (1941) / LURE OF THE WILDERNESS (1952, remake of the former)
SLATTERY'S HURRICANE(1949)
HOUSE OF STRANGERS (1949)
THE 13TH LETTER (1951)
23 PACES TO BAKER STREET (1956)
I WAKE UP SCREAMING (1942) / VICKI (1953, remake of the former)
BIGGER THAN LIFE (1956)
SHOCK (1946)

I seem to recall that a post mentioned that Eddie Muller had said on his web site that he had recorded commentaries for "Cry Of The City", "Vicki" and "The Brasher Doubloon". To me, it seems likely that a) the series will continue and these will be the next three. Unless of course Fox elects to just sit on them, commentaries and all!

Of the ones Fox has and are noted as Film Noir in "Film Noir: An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style, Third Edition", the one that I'm hoping for is "House of Strangers" with Edward G. Robinson, Richard Conte and Susan Hayward (there is simply nowhere near enough Hayward out on DVD!) and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

I didn't even realize continuing or not was an issue. As far as I know, when Fox started this line they committed to 24 titles, which would give us another 9 this year. And to further randomly speculate, in some notes I have to keep track of possible releases, I have The Brasher Doubloon for the 'Film Noir Classics' and Cry of the City for Criterion (which doesn't make too much sense, but then the Dassin Fox noirs came out from CC around the same time as the first 'Film Noir' wave).

EDIT: Whoops, beaten to the punch by ted:r.

I already have the newest releases, and the insert offers no clues as to what'll be in the next wave. It doesn't even list the titles for this wave. In fact, it still lists No Way Out as a December release!

I believe it's the exact same insert as the one with Kiss of Death, etc., except it's missing the rebate offer.

That's what happened to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

That's a sad state of affairs. Anyone have the foggiest why Fox is sitting on Tree?

The flyer inside Fox's "Fallen Angel" is odd to say the least. It displays 12 Noir films, including 3 to be "Available December 6, 2005" Among those 3 is "No Way Out", which was just released today.

Hmmmmm...Isn't anyone at Fox paying at least some attention? I must say, though, that as long as they keep releasing Noir, I'll be in a forgiving mood!

Just picked up the latest 3 today! I'm psyched! So many of these I have been seeing for the first time.

BTW, is there anyone out there that can scan the insert/booklet of "Nightmare Alley" for me? My copy didn't come with the insert and I'm feeling a little ripped off! If it was just a chapter listing I wouldn't mind, but Fox has been doing a nice job on those inserts with info on the films.

I watched No Way Out tonight. Great Film with excellent performances by Sidney Poitier and Of Course Richard Widmark. Pretty daring subject matter given the time produced. I picked up the Other releases as well. I've really fell in love with the series, what a great price point for these. Hopefully there's more to come and I need to fill in my collection I picked up Laura and Whirlpool as well, Now I need to find a few more, I'll go to the top for the coplete list... Ric I did'nt now your a Noir Fan...

Besides the occasional Bogart Noirish title, I didn't really know it either, until I picked up WB's first boxset. Since then, I've been hooked. Still waiting for a new re-master of Double Indemnity.

As far as I know, Universal has still not made any plans to reissue Double Indemnity, which is insane since it's generally considered the film noir, and would be a big seller if they'd put it out there.

The old version is watchable, but isn't very good, and on top of that, is out of print.

More Noirs = Good thing.

I finally caught up with a 7 disk Superbuy.

I am looking forward to watching this week's Film Noir releases this weekend, and now this news!

Boomerang with deleted scenes and House of Strangers, a film I have always wanted to see! That's great!

My favorite of the bunch though is I Wake Up Screaming, a fascinating film noir. I have always wondered how they got "Over The Rainbow" as part of the film's main theme, and I hope the commentary deals with that. Also, although it is not mentioned, I hope they release the musical number(s)? they cut when the first preview bombed. One of them is on either volume 1 or 2 of Hidden Hollywood.

Great news! More must-haves!

However, I'm beginning to wonder how many other "Fox Noir" titles have to be released in this series before they get to ROAD HOUSE (1948), FOURTEEN HOURS (1951), THE LODGER (1944) and HANGOVER SQUARE (1945). Top films in the genre that one would think would come out sooner in the line rather than later. I'd also include CRY OF THE CITY (1948) in this elite group, though I heard rumors awhile back that Criterion was going to tackle that one.

House of Strangers! YESSSSS!!!!!

Ouch. That's the same day as Warner Bros. John Ford/John Wayne set comes out. Hopefully a certain etailer will have a 20% off sale around that time.

wow! great line-up coming up. If they do pan out, it will be the first time i will be buying all three.
Great news indeed - three outstanding top tier noirs with my preference being Boomerang. Regarding I Wake Up Screaming, it'll be interesting to see if they eventually release the inferior 1953 remake, Vicki - nonetheless, still a solid noir.

Peter... someone (a "reliable source") recently posted at The Blackboard that Fourteen Hours was in the works and soon to be released. I bet we see it in the next wave.

Herb.

Mine also, since the actual case in which the film was based on, happened in my hometown and they filmed some of the movie there, it kind of peeked my interest after watching this film for the first time about 40 years ago. The other two films are excellent too.

I would think that Fourteen Hours and Road House should be released this year.

If they do release Fourteen Hours I hope they can include the alternate ending that was filmed. It matches the outcome in real life.
