Best Horror Movies Ever... - Page 2

Thank goodness some people are mentioning the old films. One of my favorites...probably topping the list...is Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956. Also from that era, Fiend Without A Face, which was actually banned in some cities.

I know I'm in the minority in preferring the original The Thing from Another World to Carpenter's version, but there you are.

I'm also a big Harryhausen fan: 20 Million Miles to Earth and It Came from Beneath the Sea are favorite monster pics, though not really scary. And certain portions of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad definitely fall in the horror category.

Really scary? Halloween of course, and parts of The Ring creeped me out. My over-the-top pick would be The Re-animator.

As others said, there are many!

It might be hard to find (I don't think it's on DVD yet, but there was a VHS), Todd Browning's "Freaks" is a creepy movie about carnival folk (the only thing scarier than nuclear war).

It's about a trapeze artist who seduces a midget to get ahold of his fortunes. The freaks in the carnival don't take kindly to this and torture her and her real boyfriend. And the freaks are played by real sideshow actors from the time.

It was banned in the UK for 30 years or something. It's a real creepy flick.

Being a big fan of HBO's Carnivàle this sounds interesting.
Thanks for the tip!

From the on-line chat with Warner Home Video April 22, 2003:

Quote:

[LyleH] With your upcoming horror titles in August, I am wondering if you have any plans to release Tod Browning's FREAKS (1932) in the near future?

[Warner] Gooble Gobble Gooble gobble ONE OF US! ONE OF US! Freaks is coming in 2004! REJOICE!

You know, I think the Karloff versions of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein are still creepy. That introductory shot of the monster in Frankenstein still creeps me out, especially the jump cuts in to his face. And there's something about there being no music in that scene -- just complete silence -- that gives me the willies.

And in the restored version that's available on DVD, the cruelty of Fritz towards the monster I find disturbing as well.

I must sadly say that I have a hard time enjoying horror movies nowdays. Most of the time I just end up laughing at them. However I absolutely loved "The Ring"!! I haven't seeen "Ringu" yet... Anyone seen it?

I have - saw them both on the same weekend. Ringu is pretty good, with a tighter backstory than the remake. But The Ring has spooky atmosphere in spades, much more than the original, and is (IMO) the better of the two movies.

A lot of good ones have been mentioned that I won't rehash, but a great recent horror film was THE EYE. I've watched it 5 times now and even though I know what's going to happen, I still get that chill-up-the-spine jolt every time one of the ghosts appear. The sound mix on this disc is perfect! Definitely a movie to be listened to in surround sound!

Session 9 and Dog Soldiers were two really good recent ones

Shockwaves from 1977 with John Carradine and Peter Cushing is pretty creepy and I dont know how many have seen this one. The 1932 version of Dr. Jeckyl Mr Hyde on dvd now is an extremely well made movie with great acting. The best hyde movie I think. A total no brainer, buy it.

What ever happened to Carnivale, anyway???

Deliverance

I consider it horror cause it horrified me.

Pretty nice list, Scott.

Army of Darkness didn't make the cut on the list? I'd probably classify it as a kiddie horror(even though it is rated-R, it's really a PG movie) or Funnier side.

I think I'm gonna rent a few off Scott's list tonite.

It reached its season end. There was a logical conclusion, but with plenty still unexplained and plenty of things in the background that were not resolved. With luck there will be another season.

The one I watch the most on DVD is "Quatermass and the Pit" AKA '5 Million Years to Earth" American title. Filmed widescreen 1.66:1 I first saw this movie on TV. I never dreamt that would ever see it in widescreen, on a wide screen TV yet! Stars Andrew Keir, James Donald, Barbara Shelley(Medusa) and Julian Glover (For Your Eyes Only)from Hammer Studios in the UK.

it would figure, evidently I missed the season finale..lol

I thought the show was quite "different", to say the least.

At least HBO repeats their series quite often. I'd expect that you will get another chance.
