Cool names from classic films - need baby name suggestions

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I just found out that I am pregnant with my first child and hubby & I are both very excited.

We are already talking about baby names and I'd love to come up with something from an old movie or an homage to a great director. I am drawing a blank right now, and hubby has already nixed naming our son "Orson".

I know you guys are all HUGE movie buffs and I wonder if you can think of any cool/unusual names from movies, Any era/genre film is fair game although I tend to love classic films from the 30's onward as well as 1970's films. (I also love 80's and 90's films, but I think I'd like to go for an older reference.) I love Hitchcock, Welles, Kubrick, Altman, Ford, Bogdanovich to name a few. I also have a love of James Bond films, through Roger Moore.

Lead or minor characters will work. One of my all-time faves is Gone With the Wind and I always liked the name of the character India Wilkes. But my husband pointed out there's a pop-star named India.Arie so we pretty much nixed that one.

I'd love to hear what you all come up with!

Congrats, Jodee!

I'm not really much of a resource for you in the era you're looking for, but I did want chime in to say that my nephew just named his new daughter Eowyn from the Lord of the Rings.

Personally, if it were a boy, I'd name him "Snake Plisken". Only because Kurt Russell is the coolest man on Earth.

I've already pre-named my as-of-yet nonexistant children Tyler, Jack, and Marla

If your child's a girl, I think the name Aurora would be nice. I'm presuming you would consider Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" a classic movie.

If your child's a boy, I'd suggest that his first and middle names be Rick Blaine.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

Interestingly, the Warner Brothers television logo now uses a brief snippet of "As Time Goes By", just like the movie logo.

Since you like Kubrick what about HAL 9000?

I dare you to call your child Pussy Galore.

If you like those filmmakers so much maybe name the child after one instead of a character.

Actually, Lew, Joan Fontaine's character in REBECCA is never named. Rebecca was the name of Laurence Olivier's deceased first wife. It's still a nice name. My sister has been happy with it for 28 years.

Jodee,

I love the idea of "Orson" for a middle, rather than a first, name. Have you considered that?

You could also do the whole Doctor Zhivago-thing and name a possible daughter Lara.

I don't know if anyone should actually get stuck with anything resembling this name, but an entertainingly grandiose one is from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, where the minor character played by John Carradine is a showy public official named Major Cassius Starbuckle.

Are you positive you want to name your kid after a film???

My son's middle name is Indiana.

Since you're a Kubrick fan

Ludwig Van
Humbert Humbert
Redmond Barry
Lionel Mandrake
Buck Turgidson

or even better how about

Scatman, I think everyone will agree it goes with anything. I wish I'd thought of this one before we had our son. Scatman Kennon....an opportunity lost.

Of course you are correct Rob—she is simply known as ‘The Girl’ in the script.

Always been partial to Marnie myself.

Anakin from the Star Wars movies.

Randle fron One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Ridley from Alien.

Zira or Nova from Planet of the Apes.

If you're a Kubrick fan you could name your son Dave, so that when you have to chastise him you could do it in an emotionless, monotonous voice.

"Dave, I know you're angry, but I can't let you do that."

I've always kinda liked Brian. It's a nice Irish name meaning "King." And in the movies, one particular Brian is mistaken for the Messiah. Not too shabby.

"Indiana?! I named the dog Indiana!"

Couldn't resist.

Congratualtions Jodee! FWIW, a friend of mine named her son Shane.

There's always Holly (as in Holly Martins from The Third Man).

"Be sensible, Martins!"

"I haven't got a sensible name, Calloway."

I assume StephenA meant Ripley from Alien(s) rather than the director.

The only problem there is it might be too obvious a reference. I do like it as a name though, but its her last name I believe.

Preston (Sturges) is an unusual name, but Preston might be too weak in 2000's America. Of course Preston Wilson is a star baseball player, so that gives it some male attitude.

Grant as a first name, after Cary of course. Devlin as a middle name more than a first, Grant's character in Notorious. Dexter borders between either dorky or pompus, but its Grant's character in Philly Story and can go short into Dex for fun.

PS - Congrats!

I guess Regan or Damien is out of the question.

With a nod to Mojo Nixon, I've always been partial to "Huckleberry Frankenstein"...

My un born offspring shall be called : Dylan. After either Bob Dylan or Luke Perry lol
post #28 of 60
I have a niece named Regan. I tried to warn them away from names used by demonically possesed movie children but they wouldn't listen!

Clarence for a boy.

Alabama for a girl. Or Julia....unless of course your last name is Gulia.

Jodee,

It might help if we all knew the child's last name. That way, we could judge whether or not it will go well with "Charles Foster".

Or how about "Sterling Hayden" or "Timothy Carey" or "Bernard Herrmann (Herman?)" as a first & middle name.
