Clive Owen to be announced

Well, if this rumour is to be believed, then there you have it.

Definitely will not see this one, unless maybe when it makes it to HBO, I might catch it then. Still think they should have stayed with Brosnan.

I'd love to have Pierce back for one more but Clive Owen is a lot of people's favorite pick for the next Bond (gets my vote as well).

If so, a touch of the cap to Brosnan who brought fan excitment and interest back to the Bond franchise.

Clive Owen isn't really known by a lot of film fans even though he has been around since the late 80's. I think many people know him from the BMW series of shorts than any feature film that he has been in. That has its benefits as people can go to see Bond 21 without preconceived notions as to how he will play James Bond. He is British, tall, dark and handsome ... not a bad start.

the main quality i got from Owen in the brief times i've seen him is that he projects a certain masculine charisma that seems natural and not just posing.
Brosnan was a likable guy, and tall dark and handsome, but (to me) he distinctly lacked an innate aura of masculine power.
whenever he would squint his eyes or grit his teeth or flex his jaw muscles, it just came across as posing to me.

who knows, Clive (if thats who it is) may suck, but i think he has a major plus already in his seeming ruggedness.
Brosnan made a great GQ coverboy in a tux, but rugged is not an adjective that springs to mind whe i think about him.

I hope it's true: Clive Owen has all the potential of being the best Bond since Connery.

Yeah I think Owen is the best choice than they could make and much better than doing a series reboot and making it his younger years ala Sum of All Fears. Owen looks alot like the Guy from On Her Majesty's whose names esapes me at the moment....

I really hope this turns out to be true. I'm not remotely excited about any of the other names that have been mentioned. I'm not a fan of doing a young Bond either.

From what I've heard, Owen is still denying it, saying he knows nothing more than we do.

But, he could just be playing it close to the vest if there's an official announcement coming and he's been sworn to secrecy.

Maybe it's a kind of an audition--can the would-be super spy keep a secret?

I think he has potential to bring greatness back to the role. Sorry to all the Brosnan supporters, but I heartily agree in what Paul said about him. He actually worded it a lot better and more politely than I would have (and have in the past.)

I have to find the actor truly believable as Bond; here, I think Owen could deliver me something Brosnan could not. For me, you might as well have put a cartoon character or the CGI Brosnan from the games in those movies. There's so much unbelievablity in the Bond films anyway, Bond has to sell it for me. If he can't, it all falls apart.

I'd still be happy if Hugh Jackman got the role, though.

Ironically, one more might work out nicely, in that Hugh Jackman would've aged just a bit more to better fit the Bond expectation, and if X3 doesn't happen, he'd have put a little more time past his Wolverine appearance.

It does make sense. This is the first one with $ony. Plus they obviously will be trying to promote the Blu-Ray HD stuff with the Bond franchise films as bait for early adopters ... so they have a lot at stake. Not to mention what they paid for the franchise in the first place.

So, it does get down to how confident these guys are .. and how confident they are in their jobs too.

Rich, your post also had me thinking about the other areas of revenue stream the Bond franchise generates. Electronic Arts has the Bond video game license and they were set to start the next game using Brosnan's likeness again, but due to the uncertainty and then announcement that he is stepping down, they had to revamp the next game and got Sean Connery to voice the role with his likeness from From Russia with Love.

Given that Sony is in control now, I would think that that the sales of video games on the PS2 platform is as important as the film's box office and video sales.

Not nearly as important. Electronic Arts makes the vast majority of the money from the game. Sony only gets relatively minor license fee per unit sold and the Bond franchise isn't even exclusive to the Playstation- all of the games have come out on both Xbox and Gamecube. If Sony received $10 per unit sold (probably high) they would only have made approx $10 million from the sales of the most recent Bond game, Everything or Nothing. Sony's share of any Bond gaming revenues is a minor fraction of the revenue a new Bond film will bring in at theaters and on video.

As for Brosnan- I won't be surprised at all if he comes back. He's proven at the box office and until revenue starts declining I think Sony/MGM/EON would be idiotic to replace him until they have to.

I say let him do a 5th Bond. At this rate, he's probably not going to catch Connery, who did 7 if you count Never Say Never Again, or Moore who also did 7. But 5 is a solid body of work.

If you look at it in terms of the EON films only, Moore did 7, Connery did 6, so 5 would be a good number for Brosnan. I'd say that would put him in Bond Big League.

This is heartening news. I love Pierce Brosnan in this role. I can imagine someone else playing him but not creepy Clive Owen. Imho, He looks the same way that people complain about Scott Savol: Like a serial killer about to go off on the audience. I'd prefer to see Colin Farrell, Julian McMahon or hell, even Rupert Everett in the role if Brosnan doesn't come back.

So, Clive Owen looks "creepy" to you ... like "a serial killer" and Colin Farrell doesn't ... interesting.



Nor are they going to give it to a guy whose biggest role to date was on Charmed.

Nor are they going to give the role of James Bond to a guy that's openly gay.

His hotness kind of kills the creepy factor for me :b... not that that was a fair picture (duh, psychotic serial killer... now let's talk Clive Owen in Gosford Park or any other movie he's been in). I mentioned him mostly because he was tossed out by Brosnan as his choice for replacement.


Are you serious? He's red freaking hot right now, with the success of Nip|Tuck. He's definitely gunning for the role in the media.

Daniel Craig is set to be the new James Bond, if The Sun is to be believed (and it usually isn't).

These rumours are really annoying. IMDB just simultaneously claimed that the studio still wants Brosnan back, and that a Scottish soap opera star has been quoted talking about how happy he is to have gotten the role.

I think it was only a few months ago when I read a quote from Brosnan saying that he was definitely finished with James Bond, and happy with his performances and with closing that chapter of his career. Now there are reports that

I thought Owen could do it after seeing him in King Arthur and Croupier, but after seeing him in Sin City, I'm totally CONVINCED he'd make a killer James Bond. He has the innate ruggedness that the studio seemed to THINK Brosnan had back in Goldeneye when they had his hair too long (possibly only to match Dalton's stund double who had already been filmed for the opening dam sequence I've read), and he was never clean-shaven. That was the dumbest thing I'd ever seen. Prancing around in a tuxedo without a clean shave. Who DOES that? Certainly not James Bond. And then there's the sweat and the asthma. Not Bond to me.

If Brosnan does another one, it's that many more years I'll be watiting to see a satisfying James Bond. At least Die Another Day had a lot of bang for the buck. I assumed the Bond films had evolved into special FX heavy, action extraveganzas because the lead just isn't strong enough to make the movies entertaining any other way. Retire the old man.:b

Assume away. But Bond films have been heavily action laced since From Russia With Love. If your point held up, then Moonraker was because the producers felt Moore wasn't strong enough and You Only Live Twice was because Connery wasn't strong enough.

Die Another Day lives on its own merits ... not many.

Die Another Day's first half is the best Pierce Bond movie.

Unfortunately, the movie's second half is the worst Pierce Bond movie.

I think Pierce basically said as much himself as well.

That's because he usually plays a villian, I mean he was good in Road to Perdition but I agree he does'nt look like the Traditional Bond, but maybe that'll be a plus. Altohugh when all those Lovely Bond Woman are clamorng for the superspy it should at least be believable, I don't see them clamoring over Craig.

The possibility that Daniel Craig is going to be bond, might be slim, but I still think he would make a great bond.

Everyone should check him out in Layer Cake. He even does a kind of Bond impersonination in one scene in that film.

I think I read he was in his 30's, but the guy looks 60 in that shot.

No way he will be Bond, NO WAY. That's another BS rumour. Remember when it was all but confirmed he'd be the black guy from recent Bond films?

It's lucky the general public never hears most of these rumours. They'd be so sick to death of hearing about Bond they'd never see another movie.

I liked the action in the pre-Brosnan movies; it was only when Brosnan came along that the action totally overshadowed the character since he wasn't dynamic enough, for me anyway. Plus, the old flicks didn't have CG cars falling out of CG airplanes, or a CG bond surfing, snowboarding, etc., etc. etc. There was a bit of reality that fit in with the "reality" of the Bond character if you will. Bond was never a 100% believable character. Not many people think they could really be James Bond. The most recent generation of films has tried to make the character more realistic and gritty while making the action and special effects more fanciful. That kills the whole illusion of Bond for me. The contrast does not mix well. The "suspension of disbelief" doesn't sell. It wouldn't have been as satisfying an experience even with Dalton remaining in the part had it kept on that course, but at least I didn't find him wimpy in the role.

There are so many good actors out there who are also very physical. I sincerely hope one of them gets a go at the part some day.

I don't think some no-name crotchety Scottish soap star will be handed the franchise. The franchise might as well put the new Walther to its head and pull the trigger.
