Pierce Brosnan out as Bond? (UPDATE: Daniel Craig confirmed) - Page 6

Looks like the choice has been made.

Click me to see the new James Bond.

Personally I think he's a great choice.

As do I. I thought he was better than Pitt in Troy. Can't wait to see him in Bond.

I just saw that too Scott. Bana was great in Troy. About the only thing really great in that movie. Not sure about Bond though. Although for me, the Bond series has been steadily getting worse so maybe this can help.

Brosnan was great in Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, and The World Is Not Enough and will be missed.

Given the choices, the only one I prefer over Bana is Clive Owen. I've been impressed by Bana in everything I've seen him in.

Directed by Tarantino?

Of course not. Eon would never take that type of chance.

And Eric Bana? The fuck? Anyone other then Hugh Jackman would be just wrong to me.

Is Bana confirmed?

I don't know...I'd like to see Brosnan get another shot at the role before anyone else is brought on. He's just Bond for this generation. It'll be difficult to deal with a new actor in the role after Brosnan's 9 year outing.

Anyway, Bana's a good choice for the role. I think he's an excellent actor and he's been great in everything I've seen him in. He still feels a little odd in the part though. I guess I just can't picture any other modern actor in the role.

It's good casting if true, but...
Quote:
LONDON (AFP) - Australian actor Eric Bana, star of films including "The Hulk" and "Troy", is the surprise new choice to take over as James Bond, a report said.

The beefy 35-year-old had beaten off competition from British actors such as Jude Law and Ewan McGregor to take over the role of the super-spy in the long-running series of films, the News of the World said.
It comes from the News of the World - as they describe it in the article, a Sunday tabloid title. It's hardly Variety.

Even if it's true, some elements in the article worry:

Quote:
"Eric is the guy they want but he has a reputation for being demanding. They want to modernize Bond and turn him into a youthful, suave and modern hero to compete with the likes of Spiderman and Keanu (Reeves) in the Matrix," the source said.

Bond does bullet time?

Eric Bana is the new James Bond?

Take this with a huge grain of salt -- this is the vaguest "news" story I've read in a while:

Eric Bana Reported To Be The Next James Bond

Aug 02, 2004

Aussie movie star Eric Bana may be the next James Bond, according to a British newspaper report.

Bana, 35, recently appeared in big Hollywood productions, including, Black Hawk Down, The Hulk and most recently the epic Troy.

The British report said Bana was negotiating with producers to star in the 21st Bond movie, scheduled to begin shooting later this year.

Competition for the title of "007" included, British actors such as Jude Law and Ewan McGregor.

Pierce Brosnan starred in four Bond films before stepping down due to a reported conflict with producers.

No kidding, Ernest. I just came here from IMDB.com and it still sounds like "Firm possibility of a definite maybe."

This news report is originally from a london tabloid, who won't quote a source but claim they got it from an 'insider'.

Is nothing sacred?

Is nothing sacred?

Nope. Nothing.

And if they're going younger, they'll need to cast someone different. He may only be 35, but he looks much older.

I agree. And I'm against the whole "youngifying" James Bond. I liked Pierce in the role and they should just keep him on.
I like Pierce as Bond as well. I always pictured Bond as an older dude, not some surfer guy who happens to be a secret agent.

Besides, it's the script and the directors that have always failed the efforts of Pierce. If this is true, the producers of the Bond movies may have made a big mistake by going after the younger crowd.

Nothing against Eric Bana.
I'll wait and pass judgement when I see a Bond film with him in it. Right now though, I cannot picture him as Bond.
Eric Bana as Bond =

I hope the rumours are true. I still prefer Owen, but he's stated many times he doesn't want it. Give the part to a guy who can make it his own, and Bana can act.
Bana as Bond? No way.

And I liked Pierce Brosnan as Bond too, but let's face it gang -- he can't play 007 forever. He's starting to look a bit too long in the tooth. We don't want another A VIEW TO A KILL on our hands.

I was never one of those fans who felt Bond's day was past, but now I'm beginning to agree. Adding Halle Berry last time ... going for a younger agent this time..... forget it ....

MCN now says that the Bana report is inaccurate:

MCN Sources Say That Bana Is On A List Of Interesteds, But Producers Plan To Cast A Director For Bond 21 First And To Then Cast The New James Bond
post #169 of 680
But Brosnan is definitely OUT? That much is confirmed?
Youngifying Bond? Wasn't that called xXx?
What next, making him a CIA agent instead of British?

Late 30s is the absolute youngest I would go with James Bond.
They should let Brosnan do one more, and let him do it R-rated, then get Bana to replace him.

Of course that's never going to happen, but oh well.

I think Bana is a better choice than the others. He was really likable and tough in "Troy" and although he is in his mid-30s, he looks a bit older than he is.

I think if they choose to go really young for the Bond girls though, that will really suck. No Britney Spears or Keira Knightley, please.

Yes to Aishwaryi Rai and Monica Bellucci.
I haven't seen Troy or Hulk, so when I think of Eric Bana all I can picture is him as the incredibly stupid greek son-in-law in the aussie flick "The Castle".

Believe me, it's not a role that brings James Bond to mind.
Surprisingly, the only movie I've seen Bana in so far is Black Hawk Down (heard his voice in Finding Nemo, but that's irrelevant to the Bond question). Must say that from BHD, Bond action sequences would be in good hands if Bana does land the part, but the big question mark to me is, can Bana carry off the suave ladykiller in a tux part of Bond? (I'm not saying he can't, just that I haven't seen anything yet that tells me he can.)

Was he one of the sharks in FN?

revelant link

Variety is reporting that they are considering casting Orlando Bloom as a 'teenaged 007'.

They obviously have no real idea of what to do with the franchise right now. I wish they'd just put it to bed until they've got a little bit of direction.

Yes, but not the lead one (Bruce, voiced by Barry Humphries, better known as Dame Edna). Since Bana stuck with his "usual" Aussie accent, I guess you might not have noticed.

For everyone's convenience, Bana's IMDB page:-

(And Dan, I was planning to borrow/rent Hulk on DVD; still haven't gotten around to it...)
If they go the teenage Bond route, I honestly think I will pass and just rent it on DVD, unless the reviews are great.

But if they do cast Orlando Bloom (opposite Britney Spears, no doubt) and it fades fast at the box office you have to wonder if MGM will go begging to a mid-50s Pierce Brosnan to come back.
Good thing the guys from the Geisha thread arent here or theyd be pissed a Aussie was cast as a British Agent

Some said they couldnt picture Ewan M as Bond, but I easily picture him saying "Bond, James Bond" in a tuxedo. Hes a bit too short, but I think he could pull it off.Hes definitely capable of Bonds attitude.

I like Bana but cant picture him as Bond.

I think its time for a Bond hiatis again.

What they need is better writing, less action, more spying.
Totally agree. As others have mentioned, TPTB should take a hard look at the Bourne movies. This is the direction the Bond films need to move towards.

I have no preference who plays Bond - unless they can rejuvenate Connery. Brosnan is my second favourite but the stories haven't been there to support him.
