Looks like release date is March 9, 2004, at least according to this:

Can't wait!

I'm getting it. I get nearly all the MFSL Sack-Dee's.
That album is outstanding. I'm guessing it's stereo not multichannel?

Most likely stereo, same as Lost in Space.

Looks like this has been pushed to March 23

Music Direct has this in stock (I called them to verify), whereas other places list March 23rd or March 9th. Not sure what the deal is. My only guess is MD has some kind of arrangement with MOFI, seeing that when you click to purchase something on the MOFI site you get sent to MD. I'm holding off a bit on the purchase though. If you have a MD catalog there is a March coupon in the back for 10% off SACDs.
I got the MD mailing and ordered it up (Music Direct always stocks MoFi before anyone else... sister companies or something).

But I didn't realize there was a coupon! ACK!!! ME SPEND UNNECESSARILY!!!!

Ah well... I cannot wait to hear this. MFSL's SACD of Mann's "Lost in Space" is one of my favorite SACDs (and my wife's favorite by a factor of one million)... and, as an album, I slightly prefer "Bachelor No. 2"!

I ordered a copy from MD this morning. Yahooo!

FYI

The coupons were only meant to be used with mail order. I called to inquire how to use them online and they told me this, so I'm waiting a couple days and then sending it off.

A friend sent me the original release. When I got it, I couldn't have been less interested. After I listened a few times, I was VERY impressed. Although I have the original that I got for free, this album is so good, I will happily pay for the SACD.

Music Direct owns MoFi now.

If you love Bachelor No. 2 I highly recommend Lost in Space if you don't already have it. Aimee Mann's best work in my opinion. There's a great 2 disc Special Edition of it available for around twenty bucks that features a second disc of B sides, previously unreleased tracks, and 6 live performances, including Aimee's take on Coldplay's The Scientist that's just stunning. Well worth it.

As for the Bachelor No. 2 SACD, I'm eagerly awaiting its release as well.

Now that's some kind of arrangement!

I'm loving the fact that MoFi is back in bid-ness. I wasn't into hi-fi when they were originally around so I had to spend some extra money (more than $25) to get my hands on some from eBay.

Gotta love Music Direct. I sent off my order by mail (to take advantage of that coupon) last Friday and it's in my hands today!

I'm just listening to the CD layer at the moment, but, as with Lost in Space, the MOFI treatment adds three-dimensionality and nuance even to that. It's always fun to hear things you didn't before despite innumerable spins of the previous version. Can't wait to hear it in its hi-res glory!

Also picked up the acclaimed MOFI Ravel/Bolero SACD and Alison Krauss' "Forget About It."

I'd love 'em more if they ditched their lousy cover art. At least make that crappy banner part of a slip case sleeve rather than ruining the album cover itself.

Will_B,

I kinda like it...it's distinctive. One look at it and you know it's a MoFi.

So, can someone sell me on Aimee Mann? I've read plenty about her music, but haven't picked up anything by her. I'm tempted to pick up the two MoFis based on the buzz, but $50 is a bit much for something I may not care for.

Have you seen Magnolia? There are several of her songs in the soundtrack. Also, her Web site has her latest album Lost in Space streamed in full. Let us know if you like her.
Well, I'm just nuts about both the MFSL Aimee Mann SACDs. And my wife is completely addicted. The only criticism I have is a wish that all the rest of the "Magnolia" songs could be included as bonus tracks on "Bachelor No. 2". (And I was a bit surprised by the green spine!) That aside, these are among the very best contemporary pop recordings on SACD I've heard.

It's sorta ironic that Mann struggled for so long just to get her music out, and now it's coming out in the best format from one of the best production outfits around. Sometimes irony is so very sweet.

So, it seems that Mann and MFSL have an arrangement... any chance of seeing her other albums coming out on MFSL SACDs?

Yes, I too wish the Magnolia tracks were available. At one point I made a CD that put them all together.

I don't know if it's the town I live in, but it's too often that I mention Aimee Mann to someone and am greeted with a blank look. To quote my dad, "They don't know what's good."

Nope, haven't seen it. Isn't it with Tom Cruise? I'll definitely check out the streaming audio to sample a few tracks...free is free!

Well, after buying the Lost In Space MoFi SACD based on the recommendations here and *finally* giving it a fair shot (I bought it about 6 months ago, but had only listened to 1 or 2 songs to check out it’s audio quality), I must say that the fanfare on these boards for Aimee Mann is completely warranted! Wow, what a wonderful singer/songwriter she is. I put on LIS last night before falling asleep yet couldn’t sleep. I found myself enthralled with her music, almost as if I was in a trance. I must have listened to the album 3 times over. That being said, I placed my order for the Bachelor #2 SACD today. Pretty much every review of it I’ve seen says that it is superior to LIS. I just can’t imagine that. LIS seems so good to me. Lyrically and musically it is so sound. Anyway, thanks to all on these boards for pushing me to give these albums a chance!

Re: Aimee Mann Bachelor No. 2 SACD

Ron,

I'm dissapointed that you liked LIS, because I'd love to trade some DVDs for that SACD.

It really is a great CD and Bachelor #2 (although a somewhat different style) is also very good. I would check out The Forgotten Arm as well (not on SACD though) as it's very underrated in my opinion... hell, maybe you should check out her first 2 CDs as well.

Re: Aimee Mann Bachelor No. 2 SACD

Yes I keep waiting and hoping for The Forgotten Arm on SACD.

Keep in mind when you listen to that one that it's a concept album, so songs are less self-contained than on a traditional album. I think that one belongs with the other two as far as overall album quality goes, even if it isn't as tailor made to be played on the radio (not that Aimee ever gets played, damned Payola!), it's a wonderful listen from beginning to end.

I have enjoyed all of Aimee Mann's work through the years, but Bachelor is easily my favorite. I know you won't be disappointed and you may even agree after giving it a spin. BTW, you should pick up the soundtrack to the film Magnolia. It has a few must have tracks not contained on the Bachelor album. Two of favorites as a matter of fact (Build That Wall and Save Me). Enjoy, Ron!!

Re: Aimee Mann Bachelor No. 2 SACD

The Lost in Space Special Edition is pretty good too. The second disc has some good B-Sides, including "Nightmare Girl," "Backfire" and a live cover of Coldplay's "The Scientist" (especially good if you can't stand Coldplay's lead singer).

I'm actually on a "Forgotten Arm" kick - listening to more of it than either Bachelor or LiS.

I just got her Christmas album. Last year she issued a set of holiday songs on iTunes, one of which was "Clean Up for Christmas" from The Forgotten Arm. I'm all for Mann's moody and depressing, but putting that song on a Christmas album was just going too far.

Lost in Space is my favorite Aimee Mann CD Ron. Bachelor No. 2 is wonderful too (as is almost all of her work IMO), but there's something about the desolation in many of the songs on LIS that speaks to me more. FWIW I was fairly disappointed with The Forgotten Arm, and I'm a pretty big fan.

i got that christmas album, i don't like it, it's too happy. i'd rather she stick to songs of heartache, longing and despair...but that's just me.

I think that's what I really latched onto when listening to LIS. I'm a pretty cynical person, so I really enjoy the cyncism in her lyrics. Of course, she takes it that one step farther. But yes, the desolation in her songs along with the sparseness of the music give it that ethereal vibe. Good stuff!
