That's a remarkable price.

I was too late, but even at today's price ($6) it's tempting (even for a none-lover of Brahms like me). The Hungarian Dances and a "classic" like Guten Abend Guten Nacht are already worth it.

This is my Uncle Eddie.  HERE is an interesting story of his time as a POW in WWII.

Wow.  Lookie what I found!  I cannot believe I set these things aside for a rainy day!

Cool.

I would have thought that (at least) the first two would not have survived the switchover.

The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, Circuit City is still out of business...even in Hawaii (where they NEVER guaranteed their prices anyway).

My dad and granddad should be...for sure.

What an interesting idea for a book.

If Pieter Frezon (born in Flanders in 1725) came to  America and settled in Ghent, NY...would we suppose his name was actually Frisian?  I wonder how that would have worked.  I have already started to give it a read.
If the name of a family living in Flanders is Frezon (Fréson), I think there are only a few possibilities:
  • one or more of the ancestors were called that way by other (French speaking) people, probably because they really came from Frisia (Dutch: Friesland) and were of Frisian descent.
  • the ancestor took a Dutch sounding name because his *real* name was too exotic to his liking
  • someone just took that name as a whim.

The last one is improbable to me. Whatever the case, the name definitely was derived from the concept of being a Frisian. I think the first scenario is very likely.

The second possibility is not unlikey as well. In those days people gladly adopted their original names to a local version when they went to live abroad. E.g. Flemish people who fled for the Spanish troops and settled in England "translated" their names readily and vice versa (the English didn't flee for the Spanish troops, but in those days often for Cromwell's people). A version of "de Fries" (which would be the correct spelling in Dutch now) is De Vries. This is a very common name in my country: it is the Dutch equivalent of Fréson.

Remarkable, but not astonishing, is a well-known version like De Vries Robbé, apparently Dutch + Portuguese. In the 16th and 17th century, many Jewish Portuguese families came to the Lower Countries because of the Spanish Inquisition entering their original country after Portugal was taken over by the Spanish. Many kept their names, some changed their names to a purely Dutch name, some kept a Portuguese indication as an addition. There's an important "Portuguese" synagogue in Amsterdam (the Esnoga), built in those days.

Did you know the Frisians have a National Anthem of their own as well as an official flag?
Like in Ireland, almost all villages and cities in Friesland have two names: the original Frisian name and the common Dutch translation. And they certainly have a language of their own! It stems from an older version, close to the Saxon language still being the base of current-day English.

The "National Anthem" is not as old as, say, the Frisian Kingdom linked to above. It's by a Frisian poet from the 19th Century. But they are very proud of it.

"Pieter" is of course the first name Stuyvesant had too, the most famous New Netherland Frisian of all.

Remarkable. Fun to see it develop. (In his "tribute", I believe you can spot the photo he is using.)

It doesn't take him long to get the lips (almost) right, but even in the end the eyes aren't exactly like hers, I think.
He's playing a lot with the dress and the hair, BTW.
