Mike, that is the kind of damage I'm looking for. Brilliant. What kind of running start would I need to get so as it would travel over the Atlantic and still take out a few arms?

F..in "real hobbits", oh my, that was Dennis!

No offense Dennis, but I just kicked my own ass in front of everybody here at work over that thread title. ---They've dialed 911, I forgot my pills at home....I'm in a lot of trouble...

What's the penalty for beating your own face up with a can of carburetor cleaner?
All over crying hobbits.

Keep him away from the pipe-weed.

Mike, I didn't have to register.

Don't forget, today is also the anniversary of the sinking of the good Reuben James.

Have you heard of a ship called the good Reuben James
Manned by hard fighting men both of honor and fame?
She flew the Stars and Stripes of the land of the free
But tonight she's in her grave at the bottom of the sea.

CHORUS:
Tell me what were their names, tell me what were their names,
Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James?

One hundred men were drowned in that dark watery grave
When that good ship went down only forty-four were saved.
'Twas the last day of October we saved the forty-four
From the cold icy waters off that cold Iceland shore.

It was there in the dark of that uncertain night
That we watched for the U-boats and waited for a fight.
Then a whine and a rock and a great explosion roared
And they laid the Reuben James on that cold ocean floor.

Now tonight there are lights in our country so bright
In the farms and in the cities they're telling of the fight.
And now our mighty battleships will steam the bounding main
And remember the name of that good Reuben James.

Thanks, Dennis. I am always learning from you.

Would it be appropriate for me today, then, to order a big ol' reuben sandwich for lunch?

It's strange how in Woody Guthrie's day that folk singers would sing a pro-war song (as long as it was fighting the Facists). Stranger how a nazi U-boat could sink a US destroyer, killing over 100, and not cause the outbreak of hostilities - Pearl Harbor came about 5 weeks after the Reuben James sunk. Stranger still how FDR got the US Navy protecting UK convoys while we were still a "neutral" nation.

There's a great Kingston Trio recording of the Reuben James.

Ah, yes, my famous cousin loves Winchester.

He also loves Thompson:

A personal favorite, the Winchester .30-30 lever action. Have a very similar one standing barrel up in the safe right now. A beautiful rifle. Personal best to date, a ground squirrel at 220 yards, iron sights.

Is that the rifle twirled by Chuck Connors as The Rifleman?

The model 1894 has a tube magazine running forward: the model 1895 has a box magazine descending from the breech.

Three coins in a fountain
Each one seeking happiness
Thrown by three hopeful lovers
Which one will the fountain bless

Three hearts it a fountain
Each heart longing for it’s home
There they lie in the fountain
Somewhere in the heart of rome

Which one will the fountain bless
Which one will the fountain bless

Three coins in a fountain
Through the ripples how they shine
Just one wish will be granted
One heart will wear a valentine

Make it mine, make it mine, make it mine
