Why is MLB so dead set against expansion clubs?

To many teams actually dilutes the talent pool and their business model seems to indicate dilutes the fan $$$ (not enough fans to support the teams). Baseball, in fact, is strongly considering a contraction of teams. The Montreal Expos were thisclose to being eliminated. Instead they were moved to Washington, DC. The teams in Florida are having a tough go, etc.
The Athletics of Philadelphia (who stopped-over in Kansas City a few years before moving further west to Oakland) were actually managed by the same man from 1900 to 1950 (beautiful symmetry, isn;t it?). His name: Connie Mack, the great-grandfather of the Republican Congressman from Florida. Mack first took his Athletics to Fort Myers for spring training in 1925.
Congressman Connie Mack's father was U.S. Senator Connie Mack (who was, in turn, the baseball man's grandson). The cool thing about Connie Mack (of the Athletics) was that he was the last manager who wore sttreet clothes in the dugout during games. All the rest have worn the same uniform as the players. He also used to use his scorecard to position his players on the field.
