Good heavens: Dizzy and Neville all in one post.

What, no Clement Attley - "a modest man, with much to be modest about".

I'm still trying to decide whether this panoramic shot of the Sawtooths is what's shown on the standard Idaho license plate.

I hadn't realized the history of the A's before. I just presumed they were an expansion club.

Why is MLB so dead set against expansion clubs?

To many teams actually dilutes the talent pool and their business model seems to indicate dilutes the fan $$$ (not enough fans to support the teams). Baseball, in fact, is strongly considering a contraction of teams. The Montreal Expos were thisclose to being eliminated. Instead they were moved to Washington, DC. The teams in Florida are having a tough go, etc.

The Athletics of Philadelphia (who stopped-over in Kansas City a few years before moving further west to Oakland) were actually managed by the same man from 1900 to 1950 (beautiful symmetry, isn;t it?). His name: Connie Mack, the great-grandfather of the Republican Congressman from Florida. Mack first took his Athletics to Fort Myers for spring training in 1925.

Congressman Connie Mack's father was U.S. Senator Connie Mack (who was, in turn, the baseball man's grandson). The cool thing about Connie Mack (of the Athletics) was that he was the last manager who wore sttreet clothes in the dugout during games. All the rest have worn the same uniform as the players. He also used to use his scorecard to position his players on the field.

Here's food for thought in yet another interesting map.

Which states will be early risers? - The Elkhart Project- msnbc.com

It's interactive so I won't post it here.

WA, OR, ID, CO, and TX to lead nation out of recession.

Re: Test

I'm certainly not surprised that Moody's predicts NY to be among the last states to come out of the recession.

I guess I'm just surprised that they didn't create a fifth or sixth category to assure its position as one of the very last to recover.

As Idaho goes..so goes the rest of the nation.

There will be many a celebration this summer marking the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's historic sail up our local river.

Although I don't believe his first name was really "Henry." He doesn't strike me as a "Hank."

Shouldn't this be "Acme Brand"?

That's why we're planning a visit to Manhattan later this year. Probably in September.
I'm a member of the "Friends of the New Netherlands" (now called: the New Netherlands Institute).

Currently I'm studying the events calendar, to determine which of the interesting events I would like to participate in. Hopefully it would be a sailing on the Hudson River.

Holy shit, I might like this:

Doing Research at the Rensselaer County Historical Society

The historical society founded in 1927 has the largest collection of Rensselaer County History contained in its three 19th-century buildings located in the historic district of downtown Troy. Kathryn Sheehan, Registrar and Rensselaer County Historian, will present highlights of the collection including historic photographs, probate records, maps, and business, fraternal and religious organizations records. Bring your lunch.

Mmm. Need a lunch.

Dennis - I photoshopped the photo you had, cut out the mountains and overlayed it on the actual plate - lines up pretty good with the Sawtooth image on the license plate itself..what do you think?

Re: Test

Mt. McGowan (at far right in the panorama above) has two peaks and a small pseudo-glacier between them so it's pretty recognizable. I'm guessing the artist who created the license plate used a photo from somewhere near where I stood and then used artistic license to draw up the scene. That shot above is taken facing roughly south-southeast. Quite a few miles to the east it looks like this facing roughly west-northwest. Shot taken at Galena Pass in the White Cloud mountains at approximately 8,900 feet elevation.

Re: Test

I take it that's the "Halve Maen" painted on the stern of the replica Hudson ship. Although it looks more like a crescent moon to me.

BTW, that photograph of yours had an apparent error in serious need of a correction!

The problem is that the crescent moon has another cultural significance in the US.

Oh dear, I wonder whether this might be construed to offend Muslims.

When the moon comes over the mountain
Every beam brings a dream, dear, of you
Once again we'll stroll 'neath the mountain
Through that rose-covered valley we knew

Each day is grey and dreary
But the night is bright and cheery
When the moon comes over the mountain
I'll be alone with my memories of you
