Mark,
That is one heckuva collection!

I can't believe how many I've already watched this year! but I still will never make it through everything.

Forgive the stupid ?....so you all just list the ones you haven't seen in your collection and then update that particular post or just a new post stating what you watched.

Sorry. I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.
I made my initial post and I make updates to that one with the ones I watched and the title. It seems people have various ways to keep track, click on the link in my sig to see mine.

HTF DVD Challenge 2004

First I put my own list of guidelines, not that any of you care, but this will help me to keep track. I’m one of those kinds of people that has to organize everything down to detail, I believe the word anal comes to mind.
1. I have 4 catagories for DVDs: Movies, TV, Misc. and Wrestling and everything I own is in 1 of those 4.
2. How I count movies? For box sets, each movie in the box set is counted so the Alien Quadrilogy contains 4 movies.
I also use this method on the Peanuts Holiday collection which I classify as a TV on DVD release.
How I count TV releases. Season sets count as 1 title, so 2 seasons of All in the Family is 2 titles. Best of Discs, and the like also count as 1 title.
3.IN order for me to consider a season set as having been watched, all that seasons episodes and features must be viewed. Other than that the rules given in post 1 of the thread are my guidelines for whether or not something is watched.
4. My table will show the date: what I watched: the category it falls under: and amount viewed. When the word complete is used that means that it has been officially watched and is added to my totals at the bottom.
Note: the number of episodes watched refers to the total number of episodes watched, not to the number of episodes watched in a single day so E.G. on 1 day I got through episode 13 of Frasier season 2, and the next day I went up to episode 18 of Frasier: season 2.

January:
Completed Viewing of: American Wedding, Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Volume 1, Family Guy: Volume 1, Frasier: the Complete Second Season, Friends: The Complete First Season, Friends: The Complete Second Season, Friends: The Complete Third Season, Friends: The Complete Forth Season, Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends: Season 1, Space Ghost Coast to Coast: Volume 1
Partially Completed: Adventures of Indiana Jones, (extras disc), Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns (disc 1 of 10), Family Guy Volume 2 (7 eps viewed), Frasier: The Complete First Season (12 eps viewed), Friends: The Complete Fifth Season (7 eps viewed), The Simpsons: The Complete Third Season (14 eps viewed)

February Progress:
2/01/2004: Friends: The Complete fifth Season, TV, 13 Episodes
2/02/2004: Friends: The Complete Sixth Season, TV, 12 Episodes
2/03/2004: Friends: The Complete Sixth Season, 18 Episodes

Totals:
Movie titles owned: 142
Movie titles watched: 2
TV titles owned: 92
TV titles watched: 9
Misc. titles owned: 14
Misc. titles watched: 0
Wrestling Titles owned: 41

Question for those that are adding TV DVDs to their challenge: how are you going to count them? Counting a disc as one seems to me the best choice since each disc would normally have four 45/60 min episodes or six 30 min episodes. With seasons having anywhere from 10 to 24 episodes in them, counting a season as one would seem unfair just as counting each episode would also be. Just curious.
I'm counting by title as opposed to disk, as I have dble features which I don't think should count until you watched both. As for TV, I am including them, but counting separately and will add 1 when I complete the set, unless it is separate disks, ex: Stargate SG-1 each disk counts as 1, Friends Season 1 counts as 1. Basically my count is separated between features and non-features.

So.... How's everybody making out?
I have been on quite a roll, but don't think I'll be able to keep it up, plus with all the new purchases....
I'm never gonna make it!

I see what your saying and never really thought of it this way. I am counting seasons as 1 single title, that it may just take a really long time to get through. The reason is, I don't want to have to start adding up numbers of discs and stuff. I wouldn't begrudge anyone that went the other way and counted each disc as 1 either way makes sense and its not like this is an officially governed contest or anything. Whatever works for you is what you should go with. For my own sake, counting discs as titles for TV shows would grossly inflate my number of titles.
Wouldn't commentaries be considered as extras? I thought they were until I read a couple posts in this forum. 700 DVDs = a lot of extras and commentaries to watch in a short amount of time.

Plus with the extras, how do we deal with some of the advertised ones on some discs? What do I need to do to get credit for subtitles, interactive menus, and chapter stops?

Funny.

If you have that many, just do a modified version with just watching the movies.

Good point. I'll just list the tv shows seperately but count them in the overall totals.

So.... How's everybody making out?

I'm getting there. Of course, with a smaller collection like mine it's not too hard. The biggest problems are Netflix rentals, TV seasons, and new purchases.
Looks like tomorrow will be the first day this year that I won't have watched at least 1 DVD....
And I was doing so well...

Anyway, what does everyone think about having star ratings on the disks they've watched? I see a few people doing it, and I am thinking of adding it to mine. Just don't have time tonight, maybe Sunday....

I may make this years challenge to watch every DVD that I have that is either unopened yet, or that I've opened but just haven't watched. So, by the end of 2004, there will be no unwatched DVDs in my collection.

I'm with you. Much more realistic. I don't even know if I can pull that off, but it's worth a shot.

The other would require me to see two films a day, everyday and still have some room for new ones. Not happening.
Regarding Star ratings, I think it would be fun just to see what other people find good, but 1 must always remember that stuff like that as with any rating system is very subjective. It would work as long as there weren't a lot of questions in this thread asking why someone gave Friends season 4 *****.

I'll edit my original post later so you can all see how I'm doing this, but I wrote the explanation mainly for my own sake. I'm hoping to do some serious damage to my totals this weekend, but between now and the end of February I'll be adding more titles so it will just shove me back.
I added the star ratings to my watched titles, I was going to rate the DVD overall as well, but I think that would be a bit much, so I just left it at the movie. I also added the DVD profiler collection number, the whole list is linked in my sig.

Question, is there a way to indent test on this board? I wanted to indent the titles under the date, but adding spaces didn't work.... Thanks.

Man oh man, as much as I'd love to participate in this, there is NO WAY I could watch 400 movies this year. I don't have enough time to watch the one or two I buy each week most of the time!
Come Adam!
There's no way I'm going to make it with over 1000 titles, just not possible. I'm just having fun seeing how far I'm going to make it! Gives me that added incentive to watch as opposed to watch the collection sitting looking pretty while it grows!

Same here. There is no way I'm watching 500++ movies w/extras. So do as many as I can. My goal is 365--One for every day in the year.

I honestly don't think I'll make it given the fact that A. My collection will continue to grow this year, B. Most of the stuff I buy are TV releases which take more time to watch C. There are a number of titles I enjoy watching over and over again, and D. There are certain titles *CoughCoughReadyToRumbleCoughCough* that will require a tremendous amount of therapy to get through again.

But if I can greatly reduce the number of unwatched titles in my collection then it will be considered a success.

I'm rating all my DVDs just for my own purposes, but here is the scale I use in case anyone else would like to adopt it for there lists so we can compare likes and dislikes.

- Perfect Film

- Great Film

- Good Film

- Mediocre Film

- Bad Film

Zero Stars means the makers of the film should be shot.
