The Green Hornet TV series - Page 2

Patience is a virtue, Gary.

I held out for Batman: The Animated Series complete sets (not seasons, but I believe they are presented in original production order), and was rewarded.

Same for SpongeBob SquarePants, Challenge of the Super-Friends, and Invader Zim.

As far as non-animated DVDs, how many times has my patience and firm resolve not to buy the barebones or pan-and-scan version of a movie been rewarded with the SE or widescreen edition?

Babe; The Right Stuff; The Great Escape; The Good, The Bad & The Ugly; The Evil Dead; Monty Python's Life of Brian; Casablanca; the list goes on and on...

When all the crap is worked out, it will yield a finer box set in the end, a la Northern Exposure and Quantum Leap. Worth the wait.

Re: The Green Hornet TV series

I have revived this thread to let everyone know that while the DVD set is probably a long way away, these episodes are being shown commercial free, in their entirety on a cable channel called Retro (active?). This channel shows two episodes every Saturday morning from 8 AM to 9AM. I have six recorded so far on the DVR.

This public service announcement brought to you by Gary Seven.

Re: The Green Hornet TV series

Thanks Gary. I recorded the entire run from Encore Action a year or so ago when this series was making multiple appearances. Uncut and in great quality. It's good to know that the series is still around.

It's too bad these channels can't get the uncut Batman also. It's not like either of these shows will come to DVD anytime soon given the current attitudes of the rights holders.

ANOTHER CHALLENGE FOR THE GREEN HORNET!!!!!

Well you can count me in as I have always (much) preferred THE GREEN HORNET (ABC 1966-67) over its more illustrious (and popular) predecessor BATMAN (ABC 1966-68) anyway.

The legal issues behind the video rights to THE GREEN HORNET may not be as constrictively binding as those involved with BATMAN and it just might make it out on a commercial DVD release first...which is certainly fine with me!

In addition to the 26 colour half hour episodes it would be nice if the two part BATMAN tv series segments "A Piece of the Action" (01/03/1967) and "Batman's Satisfaction" (02/03/1967) prominently featuring the Green Hornet (Van Williams) and Kato (Bruce Lee) could be included in the package as well.

Anyway, it's certainly an exciting thought!

I disagree about the uncut part. The pilot episode I watched was missing the tag scene. All of the episodes didn't have the Green Hornet In Color openings. And many of the episodes had scenes from upcoming episodes and these were not included as well.

Re: The Green Hornet TV series

I can live without the previews and the "in color" openings since they don't affect the body of the episode. However I am disappointed to hear about the missing tag scene. I will go back and check my copy for the timing of this episode. Thanks for the heads up.

Along the same lines, I do recall that the second part of the two part episodes did not have the recap of the prior week so I suppose those could technically be labeled as incomplete as well.

Re: The Green Hornet TV series

Well these don't have the "In Color" openings either. Not sure what a tag scene is but they have the opening scenes before they go into the opening theme. I haven't seen any eps yet that are two parter so I can't say if they have the "last week" openings. By uncut I meant that these appear not to be the abridged syndicated versions as they have all the episode plus full run of opening and end titles. Definitely the best one will get until we get something official.

Re: The Green Hornet TV series

Gary, a tag scene is the scene just before the closing credits. It typically wraps up the episode and sometimes provides a touch of humor. Since the action concluded in the main segment, its omission would not impact the story line that much.

Re: The Green Hornet TV series

I see... thanks. Then the tag scenes are included in these broadcasts. The only thing missing then is the "In Color".

Ah... I see now. A thread was started on 12/25/2003. Sorry about that...

The previous DVD release turned out to not be authentically licensed, and has been removed from the market. It is now considered a collector's item.

I almost bought this but the reviews I read said the quality was horrible and were spliced together episodes. Thus I held out for full, original formatted episodes... apparently in vain.

It is so sad that shows like Batman (1966) and Green Hornet have not been released. I realized that there are several issues with these shows. However, i feel these shows would have a great following.

I have watched the Green Hornet trailer, but, i was not overly impressed with the movie. I am hoping there could be an outside chance the Green Hornet series is released.

I am a fan of the Green Hornet series NOT because of Bruce Lee, but because of the radio programs. Does anyone have the background on the radio program?????

A few years ago I have bought in Germany 2 DVDs of the Green Hornet. I assume it was released because of Bruce Lee. Each DVD had combined TV episodes. I have the feeling they are still available in Region  2 PAL land but because of Bruce Lee. I did a search on Amazon.uk  with "Green Hornet" and Bruce Lee on Amazon.de. I saw at least one cov er that looks familer avaiulable. I will try to find my copies (hopefully in a week or 2)

Have you looked into the old Green Hornet movie serials Green Hornet and Green Hornet Strikes Again?  I have both of them from I believe VCI and they are good quality prints. I would think these are closer to the radio program.

THE GREEN HORNET: A History of Radio, Motion Pictures, Comics and Television by Martin Grams and Terry Salomonson, has just been published this past March.

There's a good description of the book and some customer reviews at amazon.com where, today, it's priced at $44.95. It's $29.95 at oldies.com.

otrcat.com has 125 episodes of the Green Hornet radio program on two MP3 discs for $10.00.

The Green Hornet was created by George Trendle, who also created the Lone Ranger and Sgt Preston.  The Hornet was the son or grandson of Dan Reid the nephew of the Lone Ranger.

Trendle sold the Lone Ranger and Sgt Preston and those characters are now controlled by Classic Media.  The last I have read is that the Green Hornet is still controlled by the Trendle estate.  I am sure that is confirmed or refuted in the new Grams/Salomonson GH book, which I think I will pick up soon.

Nice site for ordering old radio program on CD. While many can be found for free. the OTRCAT site makes it easy to find more difficult titles and for only a minimal fee. I'll bookmark that one for the future. Thanks.

The feature versions edted from the tv series "(Kato and) The Green Hornet" and "Fury of The Dragon" ( Episodes cut together with footage from other episodes to give them some flow) are what have been released in England, Europe and Japan)

There are two versions - ones that are full-screen and others that are fake Letterboxed :)

I still have my laserdiscs from Japan :) That was like 18 years ago!

Since this is a movie now, any chance of hearing about this being done on DVD? I know about all the legal issues. Just a shame just show and Batman are tied up in a legal knot!!  Any one know of this being on a cable network currently? The digal remastered shows are great!!

The entire Green Hornet series was shown on the SyFy Network one day this past week.

Encores ran the whole series a year or so ago, a couple of episodes each Saturday. That's how I finally got around to watching them.

The Encores were commercial free and uncut save for prior episode recaps on a couple of two-parters.  Great fun to watch these and my DVD recorder was put to good use during these showings. biggrin.gif

I saw a couple of the Sci-Fi airings in HD.  Wow!  They looked great.  The Green Hornet and Batman would both shine on BD should the issues ever get worked out (and I believe they will).

My first intro to the Green Hornet was via the radio (as was also the Lone Ranger)  and I have seen at least parts of the TV series and have a few DVDs of the GH show. I cannot imagine that the movie is a "comedy"! The TV show was not. Batman is sort of a comedy.

It tries its hardest to be a comedy. It's more of a mess. And since it didn't lead to the original series coming out on DVD, the movie is a massive failure.

I was able to DVR the last episode, didn't know about SyFy running it all day.  The episode I saw looked fantastic in HD.

Saw syfy was showing it after most of the shows were already on. Got two of them. Really hope the legal issues get resolved!! Like to see it released soon!

I would really like to think that the green hornet will get released some where along the line

FYI, the Hub is showing Batman/Green Hornet crossover episode this weekend for those interested.

News flash for those GREEN HORNET fans who are interested:  SyFy is running 3 more marathons of GH on 1/28 (9a-6p), 2/9 (8a-4p) and 2/24 (8a-5p).  Over the course of these 3 marathons, they are scheduled to cycle through all of the episodes 2 times.   Here's the link to the article; scroll down the page for the GH info.
