Did a bin dive...found Scent of a Woman and The Rainmaker...

Not too bad at all, even if I am a bit dissapointed in the Scent of a Woman transfer...

This is guaranteed to make you feel better:

I paid $13 for Scent at Best Buy several years ago, I guess that was a good price at the time.

Still haven't watched it...
Snagged Valley Girl last week. At the same time, I spotted Vampire's Kiss and River's Edge, neither of which I'd seen in the bins before. Should have grabbed those, too...
Just picked up:

"Semi-Tough" (non 16x9, but I don't expect an upgrade from MGM any time soon)
"Breaking In" (more Burt Reynolds; not a bad movie at all)
"All Or Nothing" (a Mike Leigh film: very British, very compelling and brilliant)

I actually found a flipper version of "Bite the Bullet" (!!!) Columbia dropped the widescreen side of the disc a couple years ago. Ever since then I've checked every copy I've seen in the bin, hoping for the widescreen version but never with any luck. With little optimism I grabbed yet another copy from the bin--and saw the joyous words "Widescreen and Fullscreen Presentations." And the case was in mint condition, too. It pays to persevere.
casey have you watched it yet?
manyof these former double siders have been mislabelledand only have the mar'd version.
Yeah, I knew there was a possibility the disc inside might be MAR only, despite what the tech specs said on the back of the case. The flipper version has been out of circulation for quite some time. But I took a chance, bit the bullet and got lucky. It's a nice 16x9 widescreen transfer.

Time for some new Wal-Mart cheap stuff!

I was in the local Wally World last night and they had two displays worth noting.

One was a display of 2-packs of Warner titles for $7.44 (making each title an incredible $3.72!). Here's what I can remember seeing:

The Goonies/Scooby-Doo 2
Training Day/Swordfish
The Matrix/THX-1138 (George Lucas Director's Cut)
North By Northwest/Dial M For Murder
Casablanca (1 disc)/The Maltese Falcon
Unforgiven (MAR)/Mystic River
A Cinderella Story/New York Minute
A Cinderella Story/Miss Congeniality
A Nightmare on Elm Street/Jason X
Gothika/The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)
The Quick and the Dead (1987 TV)/Diabolique
Interview With the Vampire/The Last Samurai
Victor Victoria/Cabaret
Jailhouse Rock/Viva Las Vegas
Frantic/Presumed Innocent
Mars Attacks!/Nothing But Trouble
Neverending Story 2/The Witches
Diner/Liberty Heights
Little Big League/Major League 2
Romeo Must Die/Cradle 2 The Grave
Don Juan Demarco/The Bachelor
Heaven's Prisoners/Blink
Quest For Camelot/Black Beauty
The Corruptor/Detonator
Bed of Roses/In Love and War

They also seem to be offering these online here, along with several I didn't see in the store.

Anyone up for doing some mix-and-match swapping on any of these? There's a few packs where I'd like to have one movie but either already have or don't want the other.

Elsewhere in the store was a display of $4.88 horror titles. I examined this less closely as the selection was limited and I didn't spot anything that caught my interest. Titles I remember included:

Leprecaun in the Hood
The Shaft
Candyman 3
The Ninth Gate
Amityville: A New Generation
Amityville: It's About Time

Happy hunting!

Blue's Clues: Blue's Big Musical Movie
The Accused
Paint Your Wagon

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
Rules of Engagement
Shootout at the OK Corral
Drop Zone
48 Hours
Another 48 Hours
The Shootist
Regarding Henry
Rat Race
Three Days of the Condor

I may have missed one or two, but this should be a near-complete list!

Happy hunting!

Best,

Julio

[rant]I hate the bin!

I'm okay with the bin when the titles are stacked neatly...but I hate the anarchy and chaos of a disorganized bin.

I decided this week I NEEDED to own the 1993 version of The Vanishing (Kiefer Sutherland & Sandra Bullock). I've seen it in the bin hundreds of times, but never pulled the trigger. After watching the 1988 Dutch version of The Vanishing, I have decided I really wanted to see the Hollywood version done five years later by the same director.

I've been to three Wal-Marts in the last three days and CANNOT FIND IT! And the last bin was a jumbled overflowing mess of junk! I had to sort through the entire thing only to find out it wasn't there!

I hate the bin!

In the meantime, I picked up the following titles:

$5.50
Cocoon
The Odd Couple
Catch-22

$4.88
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
Escape from Alcatraz
3 Days of the Condor

Great bargains! But...

I hate the bin! There used to be a kajillion copies of The Vanishing in my local W-M bins. Now, none.

Oh well. I'll find it someday. I can probably pick it up from DDD for a song. [/rant]

Edit** Just found it at DDD for $7.18. Keep looking or just pull the trigger?!
Dude, with gas costing almost $3/gallon, if you find it close to the bin price, pull the trigger...
Is 48Hrs anamorphic?

True 'dat! Of course, then I'll just probably start convincing myself to order one or two other things from DDD to make the order "worth it".

Let's see. What's on my "wish list" right now?!?!

I have the original DVD of 48 Hours and it is not anamorphic. I think the DVD that is currently available is the same one with a new cover.

Yay, we're back!

The Warner 2-packs I mentioned above were mostly OAR, but I haven't seen them in a few weeks.

Mike, I've seen The Forgotten at my local Wal-Marts recently. Want me to keep an eye out?

Meanwhile, there seems to be a new display of $4.88 titles out today, most of which I haven't seen at these priced before (but some which I have). I saw:

Sure do appreciate the offer...but it's The Vanishing I'm after. But, I've got to figure that once we get past tax and shipping, it might end up being MORE expensive than the DDD price. Thanks a ton, though!

This sounds like a Fluffy Pumpkin film.

Voices include the whole grand ole opery: Rhett Akins, Charlie Daniels, Alecia Elliott, Waylon Jennings, Richard Kind, Don Knotts, Mark Nesler, Marty Stuart, Betty White, Hank Williams Jr, Mark Wills, Lee Ann Womack.

I guess cats watch a lot of TV:

Mike,

Your cat rules, man!

And five bucks for "The Elephant Man"? If I didn't have it, I would have been out the door five minutes ago to head to the local WM to look for it.

Shawn: let the record reflect none of those cats are my own! I've got two dogs, myself. They sometimes watch TV...but usually only when there is some particular sound which intrigues them.

I agree with you completely about The Elephant Man. I also give a hearty to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

Don't know how I mistranscribed that, but I did mean The Vanishing. It would be a close call as to which would be the better deal -- it would probably cost about a buck and a half to ship it, so we're talking under a dollar's savings. But I figured it didn't hurt to offer.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

Oh, and Elephant Man is indeed one of the ones I picked up from the two most recent lists, along with both Wayne's Worlds, Dead Again, When Worlds Collide, Vampire's Kiss, River's Edge and (for my daughter) Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids.

Not only doesn't it hurt...but it was MUCH appreciated! Thanks, my man!

Sure, Julio. We all understand it's for [snicker] your daughter. [hee hee] I don't know why you think you'd need to...[chortle]...explain that! [Ha ha!]

I just hope Miss Spider's Sunny Patchy Kids is presented in its OAR!

I picked up:

The Elephant Man
The Accused
3 Days of the Condor
Regarding Henry

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

There was a few more I wanted but walked out with 9

When Worlds Collide
Will Penny
Escape From Alcatraz
Twilight
3 Days of the Condor
Goin' South
Donovan's Reef
The Shootist
Dead Again

I notice alot of the Paramount titles had New Covers like When Worlds Collide, 48 Hoursbut they seemed to be the same Disk, 48 Hours was never anamorphic and neither is Escape from Alcatraz at least its OAR. I would've like to have gotten Elephant Man, Catch 22 and a few others but they had alot of copies I'll have to head back. I never heard of or Saw Twilight soI took a ,chance at 4.88 but what a cast.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

Phew! My saga with The Vanishing is over!

Went to my 5th Wal-Mart (not out of my way, it was near a store my wife went shopping in) and amazingly found a copy quickly in a chaotic version of the bin!

I took one look at the bin with titles all akimbo and almost turned around and walked out. But I found a copy of the desired The Vanishing after only picking up maybe 8 or 10 discs!

Thanks again to Julio for offering to look out for one for me. Wonder if he's off watching Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids?

AND, this means I won't be tempted by ordering through DDD and then adding another two or three or ten titles on to my order! Now I can just wait for the next DDD 20% off sale!

I am so anal about OAR that if it wasn't -- even though it was not for me and I will almost certainly never see a frame of it -- I wouldn't have bought it. I've passed on a number of bargain bin titles for the kid at Wal-Mart for just this reason, including Follow That Bird! and Elmo's Adventures in Grouchland.

And I know you're just kiddin', Mike, but I've no shame about loving animation -- there is a ton of it in our collection and most of it was not purchased for the kid. We're working our way through Batman: The Animated Series right now, and we watched Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit together last weekend. And we've watched plenty of Powerpuff Girls, Teen Titans, Justice League, etc. together.

Then there's the animated stuff in my collection that my five-year-old is strictly NOT allowed to watch, like Family Guy and Clerks: The Animated Series.

But there's some stuff that she loves that I usually can't take more than a few minutes of, like Miss Spider, Blue's Clues, Dora the Explorer, Angelina Ballerina and Bob the Builder. But she's so darn cute, I can't help but indulge her!

Kidding, I was, Julio!

And I've got no shame about loving animation either. My collection is chock full od the classic Disney titles and Disney Treasures. I've got a few other titles too: Iron Giant, Triplets of Belleville, etc.

But I've never seen (or heard of) Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Kids...
