Waterworld.....was it the DTS version?

Mine is just Dolby 5.0 sound.

Never seen the DTS version in stores.

Me not like DTS. Me not like turning volume up and down and up and down and up and down through whole movie...thekeez

Movies in the '70s were, in general, working on a deeper level than most mainstream films have since. That was probably the best decade for mainstream movies from an artistic standpoint.

(Note: I forgot to click "next page" and so thought we were still talking about Zardoz. :b )

Not just for its own sake. Also, I like the warmer sound of Dolby - more analog sounding, less digital...thekeez

What are you listening on?
It was awhile ago - JVC amp, nuthin' fancy. Ran it both fiber optic and coax. Finally stuck with Dolby. It seems like most of the DTX mixes are intentionally done to really shake the walls and rattle the windows with the music and SFX.

Which is perfectly great if that's what you're in the mood for. But it seems like I spend the whole movie turning it up for the dialog then jumping to turn it down when the action starts.

It's just me, gettin' old...thekeez

Hm, my experience is the opposite. One of the best examples is the big battle scene at the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring. The DD mix is super-boomy, while the DTS mix is much less room-shaking (and clearer).

Well, I hate to interrupt the DTS/DD discussion , but I thought I'd mention a couple of titles I found in the bin yesterday: The Bear and Finding Graceland . I noticed the bin was not nearly as full as usual, and after I had wasted a lot of time digging through it, I found out why. They now have $5.50 racks with everything neatly arranged by title and were in the middle of moving things from the bin to the shelves.

Now, if they would only get competitive on current releases. This particular Wal-Mart is bad about putting out current releases in displays with no price information on the display or the DVDs. But I checked, and all of the current week's loss leaders for the other B&M's were in the $19 - $20 range.

Thanks for reminding me about this one:

Finding Graceland (1998, 16x9)

For some reason, this one doesn't grab me though...

Per IMdD:

"The story follows a young man who was widowed a year ago. He's taking a road trip when he picks up a drifter who claims to be Elvis, but looks nothing like the king. This is the kind of feel-good drama that I haven't seen in a long time. Perhaps what suprised me the most, was that this is the kind of flick that the whole family can enjoy. The profanity is very light and there is one mild scene of sexuality. Harvey Keitel delivers a knockout performance as Elvis and Bridget Fonda was also quite good in a barely recognizable role as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator. It was only when she took off the make-up that I recognized her. This one is well worth seeing."
I picked up Finding Graceland on a whim a couple of weeks ago, but haven't looked at it yet. I also got a 2-disc set of 14 ancient Laurel & Hardy films (mostly shorts, mostly silents) that looks pretty cool.

I got The Bear quite a long time ago, before the days of the Bin. It's a great movie and a steal at that price.

My local Wally is just like Dick's when it comes to new releases. The prices are only OK too. Hopefully they'll convert the Bin to shelves too!
I've been a fan of 'the bin' for sometime now and I have picked up some great movies from it.

The Blob (1988)
Arlington Road
Pump Up the Volume
Anti-Trust
The Little Princess
Pretty In Pink
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
The Borrowers
Night of the Living Dead
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Pirahna
Creepshow
The Fly
Cats and Dogs
The Wilderness Family
Mambo
The Jury

Can't think of any other titles, but I am sure there are more I have from 'the bin'.

I got Arlington Road and Pretty In Pink by luck. Infact the guy at the counter told me he thought it was a mistake, but he sold them to me at that price anyway.
I'm pretty sure I've seen Arlington Road in the Bin. But Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a $7.50 title at my local Wally.
Finally found something worth getting, it's been awhile since I found anything in the bin, still kicking myself for not getting Rumble in the Bronx (I thought I already had it!).
Anyway I got The Best of Friends for Seasons 1-4
post #285 of 1178
I found Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in the bin and paid $5.88 for it. I was surprised to see some of those titles in there. I was just at Walmart this week and found yet more surprising finds...

Beetlejuice (had a weird cover but with pictures of the right cast)
Rush Hour
Bound
Fargo

Sometimes I think people dump dvds they decide not to buy in the bin, but you never know. I mean I got Arlington Road, Pretty In Pink, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Anti- Trust thinking that maybe it was a mistake.

I wanted to get Bound and Fargo , but past.
Fargo for 5.88??? Thats a steal! You missed out on one of the best movies ever, in my humble opinion Nice to see some more good titles in the bargin bin.

Did those actually ring up as $5.50?
They absolutely rang up at the cheap bin price. I was shocked too. When I bought Arlington Road and Pretty In Pink I even asked the clerk to check the price for me. I didn't buy Fargo or Bound ( should have) but they were in the bin and so I assume they were the $5 price.
I found Spawn in the $5.50 bin and it came out to be $8.88 at the check out. I bought it anyway.

Careful, people will put higher price DVD's in the $5.50 bin. What can you expect from the typical walmart shopper?

Got Last Castle and Suicide Kings

Quickie review: Found Things to do in Denver when You're Dead at Circuit City for $6.99 which suggests that it may be finding its way into the bin soon...

Watched it over the weekend: terrific movie but - not anamorphic and the print was dismally dark and murky. I'm trading it in at Blockbuster - they're offering $5.00 per disc regardless of the title at the moment. Chalk it up as at $1.99 rental...thekeez

How does that deal work?

I'm guessing they don't just hand you the cash and let you walk out...

I assume it's the old edition of Fargo?

I'll have to head over and see if Bound has shown up at my local Wally.

Three to Tango, good romantic comedy with Mathew Perry (Chandler from Friends), Neve Cambell (yum), and Dylan McDermott.

Discs are called 2 for 11.00 now at my Walmart. I don't like that particularly as I'd rather it just be 5.50. Not sure what you are charged if you select one disc. Anyone?

Picked up to many to talk about over the last few months. Mostly winners.

They are $5.50 each. My local Walmart has them like that on the sign by the bin.

The Blockbuster deal: They give you store credit for whatever you bring in. They either put the credit on your account or give you gift cards if you have enough. This comes in handy when they are doing the "extra $5.00 gift card for every $50 gift card."

At the moment, they are giving you a "minimum" of $5.00 credit for every used DVD you trade in. They are also running a "two used DVDs for $20" sale.

Here's what happened when I went in Monday evening:

First - they gave me $7.50 credit on that $6.99 "Things to Do in Denver" DVD - ka-ching!

Then - they had two used copies of "OZ - Season 1" which normally sell for $50 each. I grabbed both of them. The cashier's eyes boggled a bit when they rang up at $20 total. But don't feel bad for them - those deals are usually scarfed up by the employees before us mere customers ever see them.

Now, we've got this independent record store here in Richmond which has been doing used CDs for ages and has moved into used DVDs. And they will give you cash for your trade-ins. So the "OZ - Season 1" sets will be traded in there for the cash.

Sometimes you get the bear...

One that I got from the Wally bin which I traded in was "The Rat Pack." Good cast but it spends a whole lot of time on the Sinatra / Kennedy election bit and not nearly enough time swinging with the Pack. I was hoping for more music and shenanigans. And as much as I like Don Cheadle, he didn't really do Sammy that well.

Two other acquistions from the Blockbuster "2 for $20" used bin - Blank Generation and American Splendor...thekeez

BlockBuster has a 2 for $20 sale that includes complete tv seasons? I'll have to make a special trip to see if mine has any.

Edit: just checked their online terms and conditions. It states excludes titles with a price greater than $19.99. Were you able to get Oz S1 because it is available in the special or because the employee didn't know better?
...and sometimes the bear gets you.

Apparently the Blockbuster that sold me the OZ sets goofed up. I just went into a BB near work hoping to find some deals...

First thing I spy is The Singing Detective - BBC version - used! Then I see Two Towers - four disc extended version - used! Then Indiana Jones boxed set - used!! I'm starting to get excited here.

I call the clerk over to unlock the cabinet. As she does she sez, "You know these are NOT in the 2 for $20 sale..."

"Say what?" I reply, startled. "Read the table sign," she sez and I go over and peer at the sign which screams in 10 inch tall letters "2 FOR $20" then whispers in 1/4 inch tall letters "Pre-rented DVDs priced at $19.99 or higher and pre-rented box sets are EXCLUDED from the sale."

By this time she has The Singing Detective out of the cabinet. It's priced $29.99 - sells for over $60 new. I look it over, the discs are clean, the package is in good shape so yeah, I buy it.

I was trying to decide if I wanted to keep one of the OZ sets - I'm a big Homicide:LotS fan and OZ is sort of a spin-off. But I've really been wanting the Singing Detective so that settles it. Both OZ sets get traded in...thekeez
post #300 of 1178
$30 is an awesome deal for the Singing Detective!

All the BBs near me split up the boxed sets into individual discs for previewed sale. There never seems to be a complete set available, but sometimes they'll check in the computer and pull a disc or two off the shelf so you can get a complete set.

The one exception I saw was the Jamie Kennedy Experiment, where they had disc 1 for $14.99 and discs 2 & 3 together in one case, also for $14.99. (Got them all along with something else in the last buy 2-get 1 free sale for a total of $30.)
