The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread - Page 8

The reported Dreamworks titles (Last Castle & Peacemaker) finally hit my local bin in surprising quantities.

Airheads and Strange Days also seem to be back in supply.

Maybe Wal-mart should change it's motto to 'Good movies at Great Prices', because nobody buys that crap about great jobs...

Watched "Freeway" over the weekend and enjoyed it. Reese Witherspoon has a ball with her role and Keifer seems to really dig the heavy makeup.

Went back to the bin today to pick up "The Gingerbread Man" of which they must have had 50 copies last week and every last one of them was gone! Damn! So I went a little crazy and bought four others...

"The Last Seduction" - Fiorentino is so hot in this and Bill Pullman is delightfully sleazy - a departure from his usual role. Avoided buying for months because of the 4:3 ratio but I'm having my doubts about ever seeing a widescreen.

"Cult Classics Collections 1 & 2" - These are "4 movies on 2 DVDs" packages that I wondered about a few posts back. Just noticed that they are released by American Movie Classics. They had some fresh copies so I took the bait. "Collection 1" includes "The Brain that Wouldn't Die" and "Carnival of Souls." Collection 2 includes Coppola's first, "Dementia 13."

"It's the Rage" - I've never heard a word about this but check out the cast: Joan Allen, Andre Braugher, Josh Brolin, Jeff Daniels, Robert Forster, Anna Paquin, Giovanni Ribisi, David Schwimmer, Gary Sinise, Bokeem Woodbine. Sheesh. And I just noticed the music is by Mark Mothersbaugh(!).

They had "Return of the Pink Panther" but I passed this time...thekeez

Grabbed the Last Castle and Peacemaker today.

Word is those American Movie Classics sets are rock bottom quality. Worst prints they could find, bad compression, discs freezing, etc. Be careful.

----------

Few new additions to the Canadian bins this week:

The Contender
Double Team (Tsui Hark)
Circle of Friends
The Tenant
Targets

Ouch. Well, I haven't opened them yet so I can always take them back. Anyone know of some solid info on the things?...thekeez

Still worth risking $5.50, IMO. You get what you pay for, after all.

I bought the one with "Dementia 13" but haven't watched any of it yet.

Inspired by this thread, I went after work yesterday "just to look". I ended up leaving with:
-The Contender
-Samari Jack: The Premiere Movie
-A Life Less Ordinairy (Danny Boyle's (Trainspotting) romantic comedy with Ewen McGregor, Cameron Diaz, Delroy Lindo, and Holly Hunter. A very enjoyable film. HIGHLY recommended for $5.50!!)

I also had my eye on Wall Street.
Yeah - I saw "Wall Street" as well. The "Samurai Jack" is terrific. The big battle sequence gets a bit tedious but overall, a great launch to a new cartoon. And the extra episode they include on the DVD will knock your socks off - hilarious!

So, "A Life Less Ordinary" is by Danny Boyle, hmmmm...thekeez
post #219 of 1178
Yeah I was delighted to see all the extras "Samurai Jack" had. What a great deal!

Strangely enough: I was just thinking about "A Life Less Ordinary" last week, found it at Walmart yesterday, and then I was looking on CHUD.com and it was listed as part of their 100 most unappriciated movies feature. Odd coincidence. The DVD is pretty bare-bones, but the insert is decent and I can vouch for the film's quality.

Sheesh. Found some reviews about the AMC dvd collections - a couple at Amazon, and a couple at another site and there are some serious critiques of the overall quality of these collections. Wanted to post links but apparently I haven't been using this site enough yet or something.

One reviewer said that Good Times Video could do a better job than these. Ouch!...thekeez

Coolness! I found "Mr. Magoo's Yacht Party" tonight. Six classic Magoo shorts.

It has a 2004 date on the package, so it appears to be a new release.

I was all set to buy "A Life Less Ordinary". I finally found it after 15-20 minures of digging only to find that it is apparently not anamorphic . Even at $5.50, I just don't buy the LBX versions any more. Didn't find anything else exciting that I don't already have.

Somethin's gotta give with these dump bins, man.

I predict Walmart will be taking a really big dump in the months ahead and hopefully we'll see something more than the squirts and farts of the last couple months.

Okay, perhaps my use of metaphors could be better, but I still believe it's gonna happen. I'm really hoping the next wave of Fox Hong Kong titles makes it in.

Wow- I'm gonna show my age, but I found a copy of one of the Underdog DVD's in a local WalMart last night! I used to love this cartoon as a boy. Anyone know if it's watchable? ... for $5.50?!

Just saw this at my Wal-Mart. If I remember right they are from Sony Wonder, So I would assume that the quality is good.

I always try to buy DVD's from companies I have heard of before, but stay away from companies such as Madacy, Diamond Ent. and Platinum. Most of what appears to be in the bargain bin is from major studios or well known independent studios or companies.

Also my Wal-Mart has a standard display near the electronics dept. that has DVD's, and 3 sides are now devoted to the $5.50 DVD's. I always check that first before going to the bargain bin.

Does anybody know what Wal-Mart does with the DVD's that do get damaged in the bargain bin.

In a way it doesn't seem to make much sense for Wal-Mart to buy these DVD's and then put them in a bin and due to the very fact of how they are displayed have them damaged simply buy consumers throwing the discs around. Dinging them and such. Quite a few I would have bought, but the package was very badly damaged or the disc itself was loose. (You could hear it move when shaken).

When I look throught the bin I try to be careful and move them aside as I look through them. But I have seen others simply throw them around.

I would estimate that about 20 to 30 percent are damaged.

Sorry for the rant.

Picked up "Powerpuff Girls Movie" last night $5.50 seemed fair by me

I know that this may not be seen as the best way of doing things, and by all means I don't advocate it, but it seems to me that:

Every Sam Goody I know has most of these titles for their typically marked up prices (15 bux or sometimes 10). I know that they will take back merchandise without a receipt as long as it is in the computer (i.e. they sell it). So,,,,buy at wal-mart for 6 bux, return for 15 in store credit ...? I just would question why no-one has really capitalized on this idea, regardless of it being un-ethical and immoral. (personally I think MAR's are unethical and immoral, but dvd producers still make those!)

Well for starters - you've got that sticky Wal-mart price sticker on there...thekeez

The Dreamworks flood continues with...

Forces of Nature (1999, 16x9)

Only two copies at my location, decided to get one with a certain amount of reluctance.

The reviews are very mixed, but the wife might like it.

I also spotted some new junk in the bin: Blankman & Cruel Intentions 2.

Unfortunately, no. OAR but LBX.

In the local (Cdn$6.88, ~US$5) bin I picked up Polanski's The Tenant, Norma Rae, Best of Friends Season 1, 2, 3. The Tenant sounds decent, haven't seen it before. The Friends stuff: have never seen the TV show before, so I guess I'll find out a bit why it's been so successful...

There are lots of copies of The Claim (Canadian version) too, and I now see it is well-regarded by critics, supposedly has great PQ/SQ, so I guess I'll get that next time.

The bin is so full now that it's impossible to search, nowhere to stack the tailings. Mostly it is IMO dreck for the moment, had a better look a few days ago when the bin was much less full, mostly the same old stuff that didn't sell since Day 1 of the local bin. Certainly no Airplane! for some time. The bin is very hard on snappers, gotta get them early or the cases seem to get pretty wrecked.
Could anyone comment on 'Forces of Nature' before I open it...Thanks.
I saw it a few years back, thought it was kind of generic and dull. I saw it on my rack and passed it by... IMHO of course.

New finds in the U.S. bin near me:

Clash of the Titans
The Deep

In case you were interested.
Clash of the Titans! A long-time guilty pleasure. I'm all over it on the lunch hour...thekeez

Another new arrival:

Crazy in Alabama (1999, 16x9)

I passed due to lack of any good reviews on the packaging and the fact that I'm not a big fan of those involved.

Smacks of a husband & wife vanity project, correct me if I'm wrong...

However, I am going through S&S withdrawl after a recent screening of Dragonslayer, so I opted to buy the last copy of Kull (1997) at my location, might regret this...

At my Wal-Mart, this title has always been in the $14.99 section.

Was there more than one copy in the bin?

Otherwise it could be just a misplaced title.
Bummer. Just back - no Clash of the Titans. In fact, the entire selection was low. All the shelves up by the register were gone and the bin itself was below the lip.

A title I hadn't seen before was Bite the Bullet which I've seen bits of over the years - Gene Hackman, Candace Bergen, James Coburn - good movie. But the darn thing was 4:3 so I let it go...thekeez
