The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread - Page 7

Blockbuster stinkers: they're having a used DVD sale - 2 for $20. At the same time they've priced about 95% of the used DVDs $9.99. Thanks for the big sale BB...thekeez

I'm not sure about all states, but in Ohio, you're legally not allowed to have a "N for $X.XX" deal without charging the implied unit price for a single item. Most stores around here don't hold you to it, but I had a nasty run-in at a Victoria's Secret one time when buying Christmas gifts for my wife. I was finally referred to the manager, who claimed that since the store HQ wasn't based in Ohio, the law didn't apply to them. I threatened to report them (I don't know who I'd actually report them to), and they finally gave me the item for the price they should have.

Any word on The Contender? looked good, but I'm not familiar with it....

Saw "The Contender." While I was ultimately put off by the movie I can't really say why without spoiling the plot.

Good cast, good performances - Jeff Bridges and Gary Oldman have a good old time with their roles but...let's just say I could not quite suspend my disbelief in the actions of the lead character portrayed by Joan Allen - not that the acting was bad - but there just seemed a much easier way out of the problem.

Continuing the musical biopic trend I apparently started for myself last week with "The Buddy Holly Story," I just picked up "Rat Pack" for $5.50. Made for HBO, good cast, and I remember some pretty good reviews.

Saw a couple that looked interesting - they were two-disc sets - each set with four cheesy horror movies. One included Coppola's "Dementia 13" and the other set included "The Brain that Wouldn't Die" - that one where the scientist "accidentally" cuts off his girlfriend's head and has to keep it alive in a jar.

Anyway, no way of knowing what sort of picture or sound quality you've got there. And as cool as it would be to have those titles on my shelf, I honestly have no idea when I'd sit down and actually watch them. And I've been trying to behave and not spend money on those "cool on the shelf" titles...thekeez

My Wal-Mart has changed the bin to a "2 for $11" deal. Which basically sucks.

Scan one of the discs using the in-store scanners (the wedding registry computer in Jewelry also works as a price scanner). I'd bet the single discs scan at $5.50. In most cases, it's just a marketing trick to get people to buy multiple items.

I noticed that, and actively searched for higher-priced titles. I managed to get "Underworld" and "American Wedding" for $10 each (down from $15 each). It was an even better deal than release-week sales, which I missed for both, for nearly mint condition discs.

I picked up that one, but haven't popped it in the player yet. They're all pretty short films (60 - 80 minutes), so the quality should be OK (as far as bitrate, print quality may be suspect though).

So "Underworld" has made it to the used pile. And I have a $2.00 off coupon...thekeez

Yep, "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" too, lots of copies.

Yeah, I've bought a couple single DVDs from the 2 for $11 bin and they've always rung up at $5.50. Don't be fooled!

Zimmer goes to Wal-Mart? I am some kind of disillusioned......

Picked up Snow White: A Tale of Terror. I remember liking this years ago when it came out on video. Also broke down and got Singles, isn't there an SE of this coming? I figured f there is, it was only 5.50, I can pawn it to a friend or something....

i heard a rumor that Super Mario Brothers has hit the bin.. so that means i must get on the hunt!!
SMB has also been at DDD since it was released for $6.30 if you want to save yourself the digging in exchange for about $0.50.
At our local stores, they'd have to give it to you for $5.50 unless the sign specifically stated "Must purchase full quantity to receive discount". The non-discounted price would also have to be posted.

I didn't think much of that. (Though it was a lot of fun to watch Depp run away with the movie. Poor Antonio...)

I actually haven't been too impressed with Mr. Rodriguez's work since seeing the original "El Mariachi." That was a mind-blowing experience - until I read the guy's book: "Rebel without a Crew." You find out that all these great creative things he did in the movie were just "work-arounds" - ways to deal with the crappy equipment he was using.

Now don't get me wrong - creative work-arounds and serendipity are great things. But what I've seen is that now that he has money and all the proper equipment, the creativity is pretty limited.

I think the best critique of "Once Upon a Time..." is that it isn't crazy enough, it doesn't soar over the top, it just sort of hops there...thekeez

Found and bought The Truman Show last night. OAR. It was in the bin.

I also got lucky and found a copy of Airheads.

Well, I took the Blockbuster "2 for $20" bait and grabbed "Underworld" which was ticketed for $14.99. To get the discount I was considering "Punch Drunk Love" but succumbed to "Jason and the Argonauts" - a Ray Harryhausen Signature release. Hey, if you're going for monsters, then go for monsters...thekeez

I found The Longest Day in the 5.50 bin today. I hadn't seen it mentioned before and was surprised to see it there.

I can't find any bargain bin at my local Wal-Mart.

Just ask a clerk. It's there somewhere, not necessarily near the other DVDs. It's usually out in the middle of an aisle somewhere. At my local Wal-Mart it's now near the jewelry department, but it used to be near hardware.

Yeah, the bin has only been around here for a month or so, and they moved it. As you say, not near the DVD's any more, I thought it was gone...until I noticed on the way out it's at the front of the store, and there were so many people around it I couldn't even stick my head in, talk about a feeding frenzy.

Both the Walmarts I find myself in have the bin - but they also have a good selection of $5.50 titles on shelves. The one store has the $5.50 shelves there in the electronics department but the store I went to yesterday has them up by the cash registers. It was on those shelves that I found "The Rat Pack" last week and it was on those shelves that I found fresh copies of "Freeway" this week.

They also had a lot of "The Gingerbread Man" - a John Grisham story with a solid cast directed by Robert Altman. I just checked and Metacritic gives it a 61 which is within the "green" zone so I'll be picking it up.

Anyway, I grabbed one of the "Freeway" discs then went looking for "The Longest Day." Didn't see it but found "The Battle of Britain" in the bin. Had the cashier scan it - it came up $8.88. Told her that I'd found it in the $5.50 bin but I didn't want it for $8.88 so she rang it up $5.50. "If you found it in there, then that's the price."

I wondered if I could go back and "find" the new release of "Dawn of the Dead" in the $5.50 bin...thekeez

Picked up a very funny '80's comedy, The Dream Team starring Michael Keaton for $5.50 at Wmart.
I also picked up The Dream Team recently. While watching it with my wife this past week, I suddenly realized that I used to watch this movie a lot when it first came to cable. So much so that, not only did I remember a huge portion of the movie word for word, but I also remembered which parts were cut out when it started airing on the non-pay channels.

I finally found my local Wal-Mart's bin yesterday. Most of the stuff was junk that didn't interest me in the least. But I did find one little jewel for me, a WS "Children of a Lesser God".

Canada's $6.88 bin has Anchor Bay's WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE with Rutger Hauer, plus two of those forgettable Disney wildlife films, LOBO and NIKKI (if anyone would really want such things). Not much new otherwise, but they still keep getting copies of AIRPLANE!. Go figure.
Just went to Wal-Mart this morning, some new titles in there were:

Held Up (The one Comedy Central has been playing alot of lately)
Lost Voyage (The Lost Ship movie with Judd Nelson)
Road Rage 1 & 2
Forget Paris
Playing for Keeps
Rock my World
Best of Friends Season 1 & 4 (Maybe more in there)
The Peacemaker
The Last Castle (W/ Robert Redford)

They also have pulled Dude, Where's my Car from the standard display, the other board someone posted that this was in the Wal-Mart $5.50 bin. So they may be going to put this in there as well.
I grabbed a copy of A Midsummer Night's Dream the other day, not much else new though...

I gave up on waiting for Airplane! to come to a bin near me. I got it at BB last week in a 2/$15 sale. That'll have to do for me!
