The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread - Page 6

Just remembered I saw Van Damme's LEGIONNAIRE in the Canadian bin, bare bones version only. Canadian Lion's Gate version of RED ROCK WEST was there too, full frame though (but not mentioned on package).

Re: Freeway. It received good reviews and the vast majority of feedback I have seen over the years on forums has been positive. Atleast enough that I believe the negative opinion is either the minority or not enough to discourage anyone interested to give it a viewing.

I would provide some links to reviews for anyone curious about it but I'm not worthy. Just check out DVD Basen, MRQE, Berardinelli, Ebert, Salon, etc that those sites list as all the reviews I clicked on were positive.

From splicedonline: "Freeway" is "Little Red Riding Hood" with a white trash, teenage tramp Red (Reese Witherspoon) versus a serial killer wolf (Keifer Sutherland, continuing his tour de force of great American creeps).

The sheer creativity of twisting a traditional fairy tale into a cheesy B movie might alone make this movie a drive-in novelty, but "Freeway" is much more.

$5.88 sounds just about right. I think I'll pick it up...thekeez

I wish they would re-release the second freeway with the hensal and gretal plot line.

My Wal-Mart just put in Jaws Revenge and that Brendan Fraser movie Dudley Do Right, Raising Cane and some others that are new but mentioned before.

The bad thing is that they moved the entire bargain bin about 50 feet down the isle toward the front of the store, near the candy isle. Now it seems that nobody is even going near it. Probably because of two reasons, its more busier where its now relocated and that customers who look through it would be embarrassed and think others would think that they are cheap.

Now the only thing I can do is get there when they first open.

My Wal-Mart has also changed the layout of the DVD section and expanded it into the other side where VHS was.

They also have stocked some of the FOX 2-packs. Going for about$19.00 for 2 DVD's. They also just put on display some Columbia 2-packs for about $16.00. Just thought some would like to know.

Virus (1999, 16x9) has hit the bin.

Looks like a fairly poor scifi flick with some notable Hollywood talent.

I passed on it.

============================

Also of note, Wal-Mart has added alot of newer titles to it's $8.88 and $9.99 racks (look where the Family videos *use* to be).

I'm talking *newer* movies like: K-19, The Hunted, Swimfan, The Core, Dark Blue, NARC, and several others.

I was kinda shocked, since I bought many of these movies for $10 as ex-rentals.

My only pick from the new $8.88 area was a little gem called 'Something to Talk About'.

I also would have bought 'DOA' for $8.88, but they were sold out.

I picked up 2 more from the bin:
Virus
Universal Soldier

I hated Freeway when I first saw it years ago, I picked it up from the bin to give it a second try. I enjoyed more this time, it's rather absurd but it was a decent way to waste some time.

Virus, was pretty bad, but worth the 5.50 to me anyay, sometimes I get in the mood for a bad sci-fi movie and this fits the bill.

Universal Soldier is a good actioner. They had 1 copy of this and I say the clerk walk by me looking at the cover rather intently, I watched to see where he put it then snatched it before anyone else noticed. I know, I'm crazy, but this is one of those movies I kept putting off getting....

"I enjoyed more this time, it's rather absurd but it was a decent way to waste some time."

Same here. Saw it when it first came out on video way back when(1998 i would assume). Thought it was so so. Then saw it in the bin and had heard everyone talking about how great the movie was. To be honest, and I'm ashamed to say it, I totally missed the Little Red Riding Hood reference the first viewing. The second viewing was TOTALLY different. Laughed my a$$ off in parts, very dark humor if you like that sort of thing. But it is totally a 'B' flick and well worth the 5.50 price tag.

Also stars Brooke Shields(mmm), Amanda Plummer, and a relative new comer at the time Brittany Murphy.

I was passing another Wal-Mart so I stopped and found a copy of DOA (1988).

I had checked IMdb previously and thought the disc was 16x9, but it's not.

IMdb has a single entry which indicates 16x9, but the listing is for R2.

Usually they list R1 first, but this time not at all apparently.

About Freeway, is the one with Kiefer Sutherland?

Yikes, avoid it like the plague. Not even worth renting.

With all due respect (to each his/her own and all that), I have to vigorously disagree. This movie is a hoot! Reese Witherspoon disserved an award of some kind for a great acting performance. There's some lines that you will remember and laugh about for a long time. She has made some unfortunate choices since Freeway, and now is mainly known for those sappy Dumb Blonde movies.

Quote:
16x9 or not, Freeway was one of the worst Sutherland movies.

This is not a lead role for him, he is a supporting character. I'll give you that it's maybe not one of his best roles, but I'd be willing to bet it's not one of the worst movies he's been in. According to IMDB, he has 55 movies, TV appearances, voice-overs, etc.

Opinions anyone?

ps, He does a pretty good job gettin' hit with the ugly stick! See this movie and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Just got Steven Soderbergh's "The Underneath." Very cool movie. Worth a lot more than $5.50, but that's all you have to pay. It's single-layer & non-anamorphic, but a small film like this probably isn't at the top of Universal's re-do list so I suggest picking one up today.

Another good $5.50 bin flick...

The Dream Team (1989, 16x9)

Not a single good review on the box, but this comedy seems to have legs with IMdb crowd.

Think I'll backtrack for it today.

More updates...

Double Team (1997, 16x9) has hit the bin.

Looks like a decent action flick with a decent IMdb buzz.

Threw down for it.

=============================

Still thinking about 'Virus' and 'Best Men'...

Is Virus anything more than scifi junk with great A/V?

Is Best Men hopelessly confused about it's genre or is it a quirky 'bottle rocket'?

Anyone who takes a chance, please let us know.
Well, looks like I got the tail end of the last restock!
Got:

WWE: 'Cause Stone Cold Said So
The Dream Team
Legends of the SIlver Screen: Charlie Chaplin & Buster Keaton
---2 disks with 2 movies each: The Kid, Tillie's Punctured Romance, and The General, Steamboat Bill Jr.

My local Wal-Mart has added the following into the bargain bin.

1. Derailed (Jean Claude Van Damme)
2. Woman on Top
3. Under Heavy Fire (Casper Van Dien) war movie
post #166 of 1178
recently picked up:

Casualtiies Of War...the Micheal J Fox/Sean Penn movie

Fortress 2...not bad sci-fi flick with Christopher Lambert of Highlander fame.

would love to get:

Queens Logic
Object Of Beauty
Ravenous
If you see Quest For Camelot in the bin, pick that up. Excellent sound and a very good story if you have kids.
John Geelan.. Depending on how badly you would like The Object of Beauty, since its a MAR release, DDD has it for $6.63.
Thanks, good to know "Object of Beauty" is available at DDD.

Rats - moved too slowly. No "Freeway" at Walmart or Target. But I did pick up "Buddy Holly Story" at Walmart for $5.50. Very good flick - seen it several times. Back when Gary Busey was sincerely trying to be a real actor.

Watched "Titan A.E." over the weekend and I'm very pleased. A good story and a stunning movie - just wonderful to look at. Well worth $5.88.

When I picked up Buddy at Walmart, I saw that they had "Deathtrap" and "Diner" in the bin - both good movies.

And since we've been talking about Keifer Sutherland - they had this thing with him and Dennis Hopper - some psychedelic thing: Keifer as FBI agent to Hopper's on-the-lam 60s radical. Anyone seen this one?...thekeez

Flashback
The bin seems to be on fire lately....

The Gingerbread Man (1998, LBX): Robert Altman movie, star-studded cast, Two Thumbs up, I'm in.

Snow White: Tale of Terror (1997, LBX): interesting (?) re-telling with high-profile cast, I'm in. Maybe I just need a Fantasy fix till RotK. Will probably research this one a bit more before I open it.

The Contender (2000, 16x9): great political drama, perfect for an election year. Don't miss it for $5, I bought this one last year.

Yes, as AnthonyP said, Flashback. I enjoyed this movie. If you are a Dennis Hopper fan, you probably will too. Kiefer is an FBI agent sent to transport the old anti-war activist Hopper to prison (I think, it's been awhile). Of course certain hi-jinks occur, and there's some hokey stuff, but I don't think it's supposed to be a really serious movie after all. Carol Kane is an old hippie too I think.

My Walmart no longer has the big bin of $5.50 DVD's. Now it is a box of 2 deep vertically arranged movies. Same price.

In addition, there are two other displays of DVD's offering reasonably priced movies. These are 4 sided, approx. 5 ft tall, covers showing (so there's not really that many different titles). One has movies priced $7.50 and the other $8.88. Many or most of the ones I looked at were two sided, both widescreen and fullscreen.

There were some pretty good ones I thought.
Did some checking on 'Snow White', seems like an interesting mix of horror & fantasy with a strong cast and good production values.

I opened it.
Is that the Snow White with Sigourney Weaver? That's the one I've seen and it was okay but it didn't really stick with me. Can't say I remember a thing about it..thekeez
post #177 of 1178
Yes, it was. I can't recall if it was an original Showtime movie or if that is just where it premiered.

My impression of it was the same as yours.
My Wal-Mart has changed the bin to a "2 for $11" deal. Which basically sucks.

Please excuse me if I am mistaken, but I'd be willing to bet that one can buy a single movie for $5.50. Excepting gas stations, I've never had any trouble buying single items whenever a store had a two-fer, or three-fer or whatever sale. Grocery stores do it all the time and one doesn't ever have to purchase all the items to get that price. Of course they hope you do, and lots of people are under the mistaken impression that you do have to.

"Grocery stores do it all the time and one doesn't ever have to purchase all the items to get that price."

Not at my store.
