Tony: The packaging for the Young Guns SE says quite clearly that there is only a 5.1 DTS track and a 2.0 DD track.

So, of course, I put the disc in to check (just for you!) and saw that it contained a 5.1 DTS track, a 2.0 DD track AND a 5.1 DD track! It even defaulted to the 5.1 DD track! Go figure.

Well, James....I finally found the $1 DVD section at my local Wal-Mart and they had NO Howdy-Doody!

And I really pawed through all those little cardboard boxes and the way they were set-up on that obnoxious shelving unit.

I saw Don Herbert and a bunch of drek (like one would expect in a $1 section)...but no Howdy. Oh well...someday I'll go check another Wal-Mart near me. I've got several.

FWIW, the only other titles I can remember are Volume 3 of Dragnet, and a single set of a several-set series of the World at War documentary. There were some movies...but they were all completely forgettable. There may have been one of those PD Hitchcock sets with some of his British films in it.

Right! This is what I said back in post 1072.

Well said. the worst thing is when you're going thru those boxes and some other schmuck shows up to look too. You just kind of smile weakly and say "hi". What you really want to say is "step aside dickhead until I'm done!!"

Good luck finding those. My guess is that these episodes for sale are not too rare.

Yeah. I'm not gonna lose too much sleep (or gasoline) looking for them!

I'm thinking a lot of stuff like this is going to be much much more common in the near future in the form of streaming shows all over the place. I'm hoping a lot of stuff comes out of the woodworks. That happened when cable was new. HD TV too. I remember when I was in Sears years ago and Flipper and Ultraman, 2 of my favs that were unavailable at the time, were playing in widescreen on a TV. I nearly fainted.

Happened to be in another Wal-Mart tonight. Found one of the Howdy DVDs.

Thanks, James!

Fair enough. So, I did some checking and it does in fact seem that all titles carrying DTS 5.1 also carry DD 5.1. I was hesitant about saying that because there's always one out there that bunks the standard. Anyway, here's another title to at least support that and that's good to know.

Keep looking! Hey, those look a little alike so check carefully. The picture of Howdy and Bob are different on each.

But congrads! Enjoy.

According to a Home Media Magazine editiorial, looks like Wal-Mart is going to be getting rid of the Dump Bins soon.

VERY interesting, Patrick. Thank you.

The dump bins, without a doubt, are hugely popular. People are ALWAYS congregated around them whenever I am in a Wal-Mart.

I, personally, haven't purchased much from a bin in a long time...except for the Young Guns SE I posted about a couple of months ago.

I've got to go back and pick up a spaghetti western that was in there. Hang em High, I think it was.

I'll be sad to seem them go. But I can get similar deals online. No big whoop if wal mart doesn't want my standard DVD biz.

Does this mean they'll replace them with Blu-ray bargain bins?

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

I like the implication that people will suddenly be more willing to pay $20 for a DVD if the $5 bin goes away.

Wasn't George Feltenstein talking years ago about how he wanted DVDs to become a cheap commodity that people would snag along with magazines as an impulse buy?

Can't get that toothpaste back in the tube.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

The move does come at the right time. With everything around us getting more expensive, it'll be easy to justify the removal of the bins. As Blu-ray becomes more popular the sd dvds of day and date titles will have to drop drastically in price as Blu-rays do the same. With new release Blu-rays coming out at $20-$22 eventually. At that time sd dvds will have to come out at $10-$15 if they want to compete. If they stay too close in price point people will buy the Blu-ray all the time. Why wouldn't you? Then, all the $3.98, $5.00, $7.50, $9.44 and $13.72 islands displays become below $10.00 displays of some nature. At least, that's how I see it happening in the near future.

BD players will need a lot more market penetration before we get to "people will buy the blu-ray all the time."

Here's hopin'!

I'm still finding a lot of great stuff in my bin. Every few weeks I wonder what the next Mill Creek set will be in there for 5 bucks. I've pretty much bought them all...lated, The Legend of Rin Tin tin.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

I also have seen a lot of good stuff in the bin lately, stuff I already have. A lot of the titles are on those double/triple feature discs now too, but if you only want one of them...

The bins are $5 in Canada. Used to be $6.88 for years. One I got recently for $6.88, so not quite in the bin, is the Hellboy 3-discer. One from the bin, likely only of interest to Canadians or air buffs, is The Arrow. I've been wanting to get that for a while, but usually hard to find or quite expensive (especially from U.S. dealers).

Yesterday, I saw a bunch of ESPN discs priced at $5.00 each (on the shelf and in the bin). I picked up the Wide World of Sports 40th Anniversary and Remembering Marshall (about the Marshall University plane crash) discs.

A few of those sports DVDs were $1 at my Walmart! Nothing of interest to me. I was hoping that Mike Tyson fight collection was among the cheapies (if that was ESPN). That's one I'd buy.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

I found some good titles in the bin this week, I picked up the Magnificent Seven, don't think it was the SE but it did have a 45 min Behind the Scenes doc, 2 trailers and a photo gallery. Also grabbed Fargo SE and Fallen, which I returned un-opened because I could hear the disc rattling around inside when I got home, they didn't have another copy, so I picked up Secondhand Lions instead. I hadn't seen anything I had wanted in these bins since I grabbed the Adventures of Robin Hood.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

Yeah. My Wal-Mart's bin is currently overflowing with a new influx of titles. Some of them were pretty good...but I can't remember any right now because there was nothing for me to purchase. I do remember, for some reason, seeing Matrix Revolutions in there though.

Good call on Secondhand Lions, Ron!

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

I picked up the 2 Matrix sequels in widescreen. Reloaded and Revolutions. Very happy to finally have these.

I saw Ultraviolent PG-13 with sexy Milla Jovovick but didn't buy it. ... looks terrible.

I hope I see Fargo in mine. I'll dig down. I haven't seen that little gem in years.

NOTE: Good idea to return those floaters. I stupidly kept Rocky III. It skipped twice and now I can't find the receipt. I had checked it with Emsa diskchecker and it reported no error. Recently bought a bunch of used DVDs and checked each of those the same way. Not looking forward to seeing what skips and what doesn't. Is there a better way to check disks?

If you mean Ultraviolet then you can look up my thoughts on it in the DVD Reviews Archive.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

Lions is a great movie, glad I found it. I was going to buy it months ago when I last saw it in the bin but didn't have enough cash at the time. The next time I went in, it wasn't there. Fortunately, someone was nice enough to neatly stack most of the DVDs in the bin and Lions was just sitting there .

I saw the Matrix movie and War of the Worlds (Spielberg) in there, only saw one copy each, already own them though. Thought people had dumped them in there like they occasionally do with other more expensive movies. I usually price check any movie I take out of the bins to be on the safe side.

I decided not to open Fallen because Wal-mart will only replace the DVD with another copy, if you can't find a replacement, then you're stuck with it. If it'd unopened then you can get a refund.Yesterday I recieved Youngary: Monster From the Deep/Konga Midnite Movies Double Feature from Amazon and it was a floater but I opened that one and checked the disc. It was lightly scratched on one side but it still played, so if Konga plays, I'm going to keep it, though Amazon has a great returns policy. The only way I check replacement discs on sets that freeze on me, is by fast forwarding the entire disc, the FF will stop if the disc is defective. I did this with CHiPs: Season 2 and the Outer Limits: Season 3 OS.

Yep. That happened to me. Gattica widescreen. I was so happy...until it rang up as $14.95.

Thanks. For now on I'll do that too. Rocky V skipped too even though it wasn't a floater. I'm watching these on a DVD player prone to problems, an old RCA. It's really good at finding the tiniest little problem.

I was thinking EMSA won't detect an error if if can "get over" the bad part as it's reading the data. That doesn't mean the thing won't skip when it's playing.
