The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread - Page 36

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

All the Wal-Marts in my area have the THREE disc "World Trade Center", the third disc being a Target exclusive when it came out. I've been trying not to buy any movies on regular DVD that are available on HD or Blu-Ray, but I couldn't pass this one up. Also got Mission Impossible 2 and 3, since I have the first one on laserdisc and not really a big fan of any of these anyways. Some of the $3.98 titles they have are widescreen editions that had the foolscreen versions in the $5 bin recently. There were still some foolscreen-only $3.98 titles though; some of those pan & scan Star Trek Nemesis discs will probably be sent to a landfill eventually.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

My local Walmart had a section set up with recent horror titles for Halloween. I picked up the two-disc Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) with the metal plate in front for $6.88. I've seen this recently for $25-$30 online and at B&M stores. It was a blind buy, but at that price...

This display was still up at a local Wally World over the weekend, and I saw most of these titles along with The Molly Maguires and The Gambler (1974 Caan film). I think they were $3.88 instead of $3.98.

The last interesting thing I found was the Mill Creek One Step Beyond 4 DVD set a few weeks ago.

I picked up the Mill Creek Best of The Beverly Hillbillies 40 eps set in there yesterday.

I bought that One Step Beyond set a few weeks ago as well. So did my mom. She loves that show.

Yesterday I picked up the 2 disc special edition of Starship Troopers. Besides that, the wal mart by me seems to be putting a different mix in the bin.

Wan in Wal-Mart the other day and picked out of the bin

Robocop 2 & 3 (The go with new new Robocop: CE)
Storm of the Century
A.I. 2-Disc SE (FS) (I traded the unopened FS version for a WS copy at hastings)

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

I saw a new "Unvbelievable Low Prices" stand up a few days ago with a bunch of $5 dvds - it was seperate from the bin, near the font of the store. Picked up The Untouchables Special Edition. There were several others as well, but since I didn't have any interest in them, I can't seem to recall them.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

These titles (and many others I can't remember) were seen in the new $5 display:

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (SE)
THE UNTOUCHABLES (SE)
AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN (SE)
PRETTY IN PINK (SE)
WITNESS (SE)
THE REPLACEMENTS
INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (SE)
THE NEGOTIATOR
THE FUGITIVE (SE)
SCHOOL OF ROCK (FULL FRAME)
THE ITALIAN JOB (2003/FULL FRAME)
THE LONGEST YARD (Adam Sandler)
SON OF THE MASK
THE CELL
MONEY TALKS
THE DIRTY DOZEN
one of the SCOOBY DOO movies

There was an ill-tempered woman looking over the display and she said --loud enough for everyone to hear-- "I hate it when they're widescreen!" She then looked at me for support, and I had to look the other way.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

I agree. Some good ones. But I spent my gift cards on something other than bargain bin stuff. Interview with a Vampire and Dirty Dozen better be in there in a few weeks when I visit again.

I also saw Best of Bonanza and Best of The Lucy Show from Milll Creek in the bins. Didn't buy either. Soon...

Got "Wallace & Gromit, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" Widescreen, whoohoo, almost bought this one before many times at higher price.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

I was walking by my bin the other day...and it was surrounded by people ewho were heaving titles all over the place.

One thing caught my eye, however. I saw a copy of Flags of Our Fathers in the bin. I dismissed it as something which someone must have dumped in there by "mistake"...until I saw another. I did not stop to check if they were stickered for the bin...but after seeing the second one I figured they must be.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

Picked up...

THE DOORS SE & DETROIT ROCK CITY. Woo hoo!

Also got THE THREE AMIGOS!!

Although I didn't see any of the others I wanted from last time, like Interview with a Vamp and Dirty Dozen....still a nice haul for $15.

I put back SESAME STREET PRESENTS FOLLOW THAT BIRD. I'll pick that up when I get the Old School sets. I have no kids. :p But boy do I have a high level of nostalgia for that show. Anyway, just reporting it's available inthere for 5 bucks. Good deal. Even DD has it for $6.

Yeah, but it's P&S. Maybe if they paid ME 5 bucks... maybe.

True. Although that makes it look more nostalgic, like TV. Might actually be better that way alongside the Old School TV set.

Please...nobody throw things at me. I almost never buy anything but widescreen unless it's a rarity with heavy nostalgia.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

Bought 11 DVDs yesterday. Total $47.

Dollar tree purchases. Each one a dollar!
The 70s-From Bellbottoms to Boogie Shoes. Narrated by Danny "Partridge" Bonaduce. Not a fan of Bonaduce himself, but this looks to be fun. It's still selling for $17.99 at amazon. Get it!
The Legend of Cougar Canyon. Hoping this will be similar to the likable Disney semi-documentary film Charlie, the Lonesome Cougar. Rex Allen narrates, so at least there's that.

Walmart bin. $5 each
Interview with a Vampire
Popeye-Robin Williams
My Girl. Just broke down and bought this lame fullscreen. Tired of my VHS.
Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God. I know...I know.
World Trade Center. Stone film.
Don't Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead
South Park the movie, bigger...blah blah uncut. Didn't watch the show too much but this film is f-ed up and hilarious at the same time.
The Incredible Mr. Limpet. Now I just need that Don Knotts movie set and I'm all set. Oh, and the Andy Griffith show complete. Don was the man!
True Lies.

I thought anything carrying a DTS 5.1 had to have a DD 5.1 by default. I read that somewhere. Has something to do with consumers who may not have DTS being able to fully enjoy the multichannel surround sound.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

Discovered WallyWorld's $1 Digiview bin located annoyingly next to a regisiter. I think I apologized to 21 people for being in their way while looking. Thank you WalMart.

Leigh Scott's Dragon. Had to return this since it skipped a bunch of times. Hardly worth the trouble. Blah!
Death Valley: The Return of Bloody Bill. This was better than expected. Some nice looking ladies for this card carrying pervy to watch and okay acting for something like this.
Sci-Fi Invasion #1. Cosmos: War of the Planets (1977), Assignment Outer Space (1960, aka Space Men), Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet (1965), Warning From Space (1956). A quarter per movie. These seem to be some fun-bad ones.
Sci-Fi Invasion #2. This Is Not a Test (1962), Killers from Space (1954), Wasp Woman (1960), Unknown World (1951). Same here.
Watch Mr. Wizard! 3 episodes of the older version of Don Herbert's classic "teaching the kiddies science whether they like it or not" shows.
Rin Tin Tin: The Test and Skull & Crown.
Howdy Doody Show. 4 episodes. All B&W (thank the dvd gods!)
Howdy Doody Show #2. 4 more episodes. All B&W.

Not a bad haul in the dollar bin. They can keep releasing these old B&W shows nobody wants and I'll keep a stack of dollar bills in my wallet to buy em myself.

$5 each.
Bonaza. Mill Creek.
Ultimate TV Westerns. Mill Creek.
Lucy and Friends. Mill Creek.

Just noticed your post. I'll open them when I get home and give you a report. The shots on the back make them look like they have a lot of overly bright blotches and that sort of thing.

I have 2 DVDs of color episodes as well that were done in the 70s. I was disappointed since I wanted the classic old ones. Although the episodes are goofy fun even in color.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

Mike, the Howdy Doody show probably looks exactly like you'd expect. But they really aren't that messy looking. Time has taken away the sharp detail, the prints certainly leave a lot to be desired. BUt I would've be disappointed if I paid $4 or 5 for these instead of only a dollar. Definitely worth it.

As for content, there's commercials!! Tootsie Roll candy is the only candy I should buy, apparently! Cause Buffalo Bob says so. They look like a lot of fun. Kids of today don't watch this stuff, do they? It's funny, 40 year old man buying this. But I'm very happy with the purchase. I loved this when it appeared in the 70s.

The episodes:
Vol 1 - "Scuttlebutt", "Old Tricks", "Val Carney", "Water fountain"
Vol 2 - "Andy Handy", "EAster", "Yodstick King part 1", "Yodstick King part 2"

I've really got to find out what the hell a yodstick is... *googles*

Ha ha!! This DVD came up!! I'm guessing a play on the word "yard stick". That's cool. I might watch one Saturday morning. These look great. I adore old out of date TV stuff. When the Game Show Channel used to run those old black and white shows it was like going back in time.

Re: The Ongoing Wal-Mart $4.88/$5.50/$5.88 Bargain Bin Thread

They might be kinescopes...which generally look pretty crappy...but, as the saying goes, are better than nothing at all.

My wife picked me up a DVD from a dollar store a few weeks ago that had episodes from a bunch of 1950s game shows: I've Got A Secret, To Tell the Truth, $64,000 Question, etc. and they've been a lot of fun to watch.

How hysterical that each contestant on I've Got a Secret walked out with a small amount of cash AND a carton of Winston cigarettes!

I've always wanted to show my kids the marionette that was the biggest star of TV for quite awhile.

Definitely better than nothing. They don't look all that bad. I only watched a little but I saw nothing that I didn't expect.

Holy mackeral! I'll be looking for that and snap it up. I was looking at a youtube of the old "Your Hit Parade" show and it was actually "Lucky Strike's Your Hit parade". It has Sinatra singing Stardust. Amazing performance. But he's wearing this gigantic suit! That's the kind of stuff I like to see. Kind of like Bill Cullen and the geek eyewear he used to have. I love that!

Nah, the DD requirement on DVDs does not require it be multi-channel. Therefore discs with DTS 5.1, it's fair game to have only a DD 2.0 soundtrack. It has to have that DD soundtrack but it doesn't have to be multichannel/5.1.

This was particularly the case [DTS 5.1 + DD 2.0] back in the days when DTS DVDs commonly used the 1536kbps rate. It wasn't easy/possible to fit the AC-3 5.1 track at the same time (which would usually be 448kbps, though it could be lower that wasn't often used).

Later on what most DVDs started doing though, was using the half-rate DTS (768kbps), thus allowing both DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1 on the same disc without any issues. There were still DTS discs that used the full-rate DTS, but much more common was the half-rate because of this "problem" with DD 5.1 co-existing.
